Description: Compressional and shear velocities, density, and porosity were measured for 22 serpentinized peridotites recovered during ODP Leg 125. The densities of the samples vary from 2.40 to 2.86 g/cm**3, whereas the compressional velocities at 200 MPa are between 4.60 and 6.47 km/s. A positive linear trend exists between both compressional and shear velocities and density. The high porosity in serpentinized peridotites decreases the density and seismic velocity.

In: Von Herzen, RP; Robinson, PT; et al. (eds.), Proceedings of the Ocean Drilling Program, Scientific Results, College Station, TX (Ocean Drilling Program), 118, 261-269, https://doi.org/10.2973/odp.proc.sr.118.144.1991
    Publication Date: 2024-01-09
Description: Geophysical logs recorded over 500 m in Hole 735B have been analyzed to identify the in-situ properties and the fracture permeability of basement rocks in the Atlantis II Fracture Zone. Although hydroxyl-bearing alteration minerals were found to be most abundant in the upper section of this hole, the highest permeabilities were also measured in this zone by packer tests. This interval corresponds to the presence of several open fractures imaged by the acoustic televiewer and to indications of fluid flow through transmissive fractures in the log responses. Negative temperature-gradient and large semblance anomalies were found to correlate well with the largest of the observed fracture zones near 40, 100-150, 200, and 264 mbsf. Although no stress-induced wellbore breakouts were observed in the televiewer images, most of the 70 identified fractures strike subparallel to the north-south fracture zone and dip steeply west-southwest. These fractures probably formed as a result of normal faulting on the transform side of the uplifted ridge, where Hole 735B was sited in the Atlantis II Fracture Zone, rather than as a direct result of horizontal plate-tectonic motion.

In:  Supplement to: Larson, Roger L; Fisher, Andrew T; Jarrard, Richard D; Becker, Keir; ODP Leg 144 Shipboard Scientific Pary (1993): Highly permeable and layered Jurassic oceanic crust in the western Pacific. Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 119(1-2), 71-83, https://doi.org/10.1016/0012-821X(93)90007-V
    Publication Date: 2024-01-09
Description: Bulk permeability was determined from drillstring packer measurements in ODP Hole 801C in Jurassic oceanic crust in the western Pacific. The values average 8 * 10**-14 m**2 over 93 m of open hole, or 4 * 10**-13 m**2 if the permeable interval is confined to an 18 m thick hydrothermal zone within oceanic basement. These values are about 1-10 times higher than those reported for the upper sections of Holes 395A, 504B and 735B in 3.7, 5.9 and 11 Ma old oceanic crust respectively. The discovery that 160 Ma old oceanic crust contains a zone with extremely high permeability is not predicted by any model of ocean crustal evolution. The high permeability interval appears to be associated with the burial by off-ridge volcanism of a zone of hydrothermal precipitates and altered basalts. The generality of this result may depend on the generality of off-ridge volcanism necessary to create and preserve such zones of high permeability within the ocean crustal section. Although the crustal and permeability structures detected at Hole 801C may not fit easily into currently accepted models of crustal accretion and aging, the generality of off-ridge volcanism suggests that these structures could actually be typical of large portions of the world's oceanic crust.
