Notes: Summary An elastic stress-strain relation is formulated in terms of crack tensors which makes it possible to take into account explicitly the effect of joints on elastic behavior of rock masses. The present study is to discuss some related topics which may be encountered in its practical application. Two problems are solved by incorporating the elastic stress-strain relation into a program for three-dimensional finite element analyses; i. e., stress concentration by surface loading and displacement by excavation of an intersecting tunnel. Validity of the results is checked by comparing them with a laboratory model test and a field test, with the following conclusions: The overall distribution of stress definitely depends on a joint stiffness ratio (i. e., normal stiffness to shear stiffness). If the ratio is chosen as unity, the stress concentration occurs mainly in the direction parallel to major joints. If the ratio is high, say 10, then the stress concentrates along the perpendicular as well as the parallel directions to major joints. It can be said, on the basis of the fairly good agreement of the calculations using the high stiffness ratio with the field and laboratory measurements, that the elastic solution by crack tensors provides a practical tool for estimating the stress and strain in strongly jointed rock masses.

Notes: Abstract High temperature deformation behaviour of MoSi2 and WSi2 single crystals, which both oriented near 〈001〉 and near 〈100〉, have been studied by compression tests over the temperature range of 1100 to 1500° C in a high vacuum of less than 6×10−4 Pa. At elevated temperatures, several per cent compression deformation is possible in both MoSi2 and WSi2. Slips on {110∼ and {013∼ planes, the dislocation with the direction of Burgers vector 〈331〉 and the stacking fault on {110∼ plane are observed in both deformed MoSi2 and WSi2. In MoSi2, the 0.2% offset stress of the sample oriented 〈001〉 is higher than that of the sample oriented 〈100〉. The higher strength of the sample oriented 〈001〉 is related to the higher CRSS for the main slip plane of it. The reverse orientation dependence of the strength in WSi2 is also correlated with the difference in CRSS on {110∼ and {013∼ planes, which shows the opposite result to MoSi2. The higher CRSS on {110∼ plane in WSi2 compared to that on {013∼ may be caused by the formation of a large number of stacking faults on {110∼ plane.

Notes: A sensitive and rapid method to analyse fuel components in blood from rats exposed to kerosene or light oil vapour was developed by making use of capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The aliphatic hydrocarbons with carbon numbers 8-10 and aromatics such as toluene, xylene, 3- and 4-ethyltoluene and trimethylbenzenes were clearly detected in blood from rats exposed to kerosene or light oil vapour, using the head-space method combined with the salting-out technique. The concentration ratio of pseudocumene to toluene in blood exposed to light oil was higher than that in the case of exposure to kerosene. The lower limits of detection were 50 pg and 1 ng in toluene and pseudocumene, respectively. Our suggestion is that this method is useful in forensic investigations to detect fuel components in blood and for the purposes of differentiating kerosene and light oil in blood tissues.

Notes: Abstract The coalescence process of Au small particles (11 nm in radius) dispersed in 2-propanol is studied via fractal analysis. It was found that the particle network grows one-dimensionally at an initial stage and three-dimensionally in later stage accompanying with the increase of the size of a constituent particle. Ostwald ripening was found at the beginning of the growth process. The intensity of the absorption band at around 750 nm gradually increases in concurrence with the growth of particle network at the expense of the decrease of the intensity of 523 nm plasmon band of isolated particles.

Notes: Abstract The static magnetic susceptibilities of Mg fine particles have been measured by Faraday method, varying the temperature from 2 to 300K and the magnetic field up to 5T. The experimental results show diamagnetic deviation of fine particles from bulk magnetization in the higher field region than ∼1T. It suggests size dependent saturation of paramagnetism or enhancement of diamagnetism in a high magnetic field.

Notes: Abstract Ferromagnetic properties of ultrafine magnetite (Fe3O4) particles were examined by the ESR and the static magnetic susceptibility measurements. Ferromagnetic resonance became to be observed at the particle size larger than 3.4 nm. This finding suggests that the bulk-like ferromagnetic state cannot be formed in the particle less than 3.4 nm diameter for magnetite. Magnetic moments in such a small diameter region were also determined by the analyses of magnetization curves and were found to be smaller than those expected from the particle size. These findings from ESR and magnetization are discussed to clarify the nature of spin-ordering in a finite size sample.

Notes: Abstract We evaluate the multiplicity of hadrons in thee + e −-annihilation at a given thrustT in the modified leading-log approximation, including $$O(\sqrt {\alpha _s } )$$ corrections. The calculation is done at a large value of τ=1−T by the use of the factorisation which takes place in the one-particle-inclusive cross section at a given τ. At a small τ, a different type of factorisation takes place, which also enable us to evaluate the multiplicity. Two approaches are compared numerically. Measuring this quantity near τ=1/3, we can determine the multiplicity ratio between a gluon-jet and a quark-jet.
