    Notes: Field experiments were conducted in St Paul, MN, USA, to test the hypothesis that early season declines in the red:far-red ratio (R:FR) associated with FR reflection from neighbouring leaves have a role in regulating barley development. Treatment plants were grown adjacent to densely sown border rows of barley. The borders functioned to reflect far-red (FR), which reduced R:FR within the treatment plant light environment without shading treatment plants. Barriers were set in the soil to minimize root interactions between treatment plants and borders. Treatment plants were spaced either 2 or 16 cm apart. The presence of borders significantly increased shoot leaf and internode lengths at both plant spacings. Leaf sheath length data suggest that interactions between 2 cm spaced treatment plants enhanced plant responsiveness to the presence of borders. Border treatments shortened the period of vegetative growth prior to initiation of main shoot floral primordia. Bordered plants formed fewer main shoot leaves, initiated internode elongation at a lower node, and had slightly earlier heading dates than unbordered controls. Leaf appearance rate was not influenced by border treatments. We conclude that barley shoot development is photomorphogenically modulated by R:FR. Early season shifts in R:FR could have a significant influence on shoot development given that barley has the capacity to detect and developmentally respond to declines in R:FR associated with FR reflection from neighbours.

    Notes: The serological characteristics of 215 strains of Xanthomonas albilineans from 28 locations throughout the world were investigated. Three serovars were identified by using three sera prepared against strains from different locations. The same variation among strains was observed with different serological assays: immunofluorescence. dot-blot enzyme immunoassay and agglutination. Serovar I is the largest group and consists of strains from various geographic locations such as Australia. USA (Florida), Guadeloupe. India. Mauritius. Réunion and including South Africa. Serovar II contains only strains from Africa: Burkina Faso. Cameroon. Kenya. Ivory Coast. Serovar III is the smallest group and contains strains from Caribbean islands (Guadeloupe. Saint Kitts. Martinique). Oceania (Fiji) and Asia (Sri Lanka). This serological variability should be considered when serological techniques are applied for the diagnosis of leaf-scald disease of sugarcane.

    Notes: The unit-copy P1 plasmid depends for stability on a plasmld-encoded partition region called par, consisting of the parA and parB genes and the parS site. ParA is absolutely required for partition, but its partition-critical role is not known. Purified ParA protein is shown to possess an ATPase activity in vitro which is specifically stimulated by purified ParB protein and by DNA. ParA is responsible for regulation of expression of parA and parB, and purified ParA has an ATP-dependent, site-specific DNA binding activity which recognizes a sequence that overlaps the parA promoter. The rote of the ATP-dependence of the binding activity, as well as other possible functions of the ATPase activity in partition, is discussed.

    Notes: Changes in buoyancy in fertilized bathypelagic eggs of the walleye pollock, Theragra chalcogramma, collected from Shelikof Strait in the Gulf of Alaska were measured under controlled laboratory conditions in density gradient columns from 90 h post–fertilization through hatching. Eggs were incubated at 6° C and exposed to either diel light or constant dark. Eggs held under diel light conditions became more dense than eggs under constant dark beginning 〈10 h after exposure to light and remained so until 12 h before hatching. Eggs held under constant dark then became more dense than those under diel light. Hatching of eggs under both conditions began at the same time but eggs under diel light showed a delayed hatching rate. Light–induced changes in egg density indicate the ability of walleye pollock eggs to respond to external stimuli and thereby alter their position in the water column in an ecologically meaningful way.

    Notes: In March 1990 a pilot ultra-violet disinfection plant was installed at the sewage-treatment works in Bellozanne, Jersey. The pilot plant was set up to test the ability of the process to meet certain defined objectives and, ultimately, to enable the island authorities to satisfy stringent water quality objectives in the receiving waters of St Aubins Bay.The pilot study simulated an open channel installation using medium pressure ultra-violet lamps parallel to the direction of flow. The pilot plant was supplied by Trojan Technologies Inc.The pilot study met its objectives and confirmed the design parameters for a full-scale plant installation to follow.

    Notes: Abstract Laser velocimetry measurements were made within a laboratory radial vaned diffuser with three different blade configurations. Measurements were made through passages with four, six and eight blades installed at off design conditions. Also, in the eight blade diffuser measurements were made between the blade passage exit and diffuser exit so that the complete secondary flow could be defined. The flow was found to separate from the blades and form large separation zones. The separation zones consisted primarily of two vortices rotating in opposite directions. At the passage exit the separation region encompassed 23% of the circumferential area for the four blade diffuser, 45% for the six blade and 40% in the eight blade diffuser. Separation occurred at 23%, 27% and 50% from the leading edge of the blades for the 4, 6 and 8 bladed diffusers, indicating that more blades better controlled the separation. Turbulence intensities ranged from approximately 5% to 15% in the primary flow and reached a few hundred percent in the secondary flow within the separation regions.

    Notes: Abstract As wetland functions are being more clearly evaluated, demand is increasing for the ability to mitigate for specific wetland functions that have been degraded. When wetland restoration project goals specify functions, success of the project depends heavily on proper guidance for project siting, design, implementation, and monitoring. A decision sequence is presented for wetland restoration projects to help achieve functional replacement. This methodology incorporates site selection and design features for specified wetland functions into three phases of a project planning decision sequence. The first phase, site selection, situates a wetland where there is the potential to perform a function. Phases two and three, the incorporation of functional design features into design criteria and project plan development, focus on the optimization of the functional capacity of a site. An example is given of how a wetland restoration project planning team can consider enhancing vegetation diversity during the project plan development phase to achieve a goal of improved wildlife habitat.

    Notes: Abstract The wetland resources in the southern United States are diverse, being characterized by bottomland hardwoods, forested riparian zones, swamps, marshes, bogs, and fens. Recognizing the importance of the wetland resource, the need to develop information on the diversity of wetland types, and the evolving public debate regarding the protection and management of wetlands, this conference was organized to (1) provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of current research and information on wetland ecosystems, (2) to develop a basis on which to improve wetland conservation and management, (3) to provide a forum to encourage collaboration in the study and management of wetland resources, and (4) to suggest actions that would benefit wetland conservation and management. Twenty-three invited technical papers and three working group sessions addressed topics encompassing the full spectrum of wetland issues, including resource status, ecological and hydrological processes, management and conservation, and restoration and creation. Major findings discussed at the conference included the need to distinguish between functions and values, the development of a hydrogeomorphic classification system for assessing wetland functions, and assessment methodologies for planning and implementing effective wetland restoration projects. Papers summarizing the current understanding of wetland soil and vegetation processes in the region highlighted the important role wetlands play in landscape function, yet the understanding of those processes is incomplete. Insights developed from the study of wetlands in the interior southeastern United States have widespread applicability to other regions because of similarities in hydrogeomorphic setting and vegetation communities, and the management and conservation issues.
