Notes: Summary The P1P2 promoters of Escherichia coli K12 deo operon, residing on an AvaII restriction fragment, were used to construct a new expression vector. To evaluate the potential of the P1P2-driven expression system we have inserted the sequence of human superoxide dismutase (hSOD) downstream of the deo ribosome binding site. Expression of hSOD was evaluated by means of sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and enzyme activity. In crude cell extracts hSOD expression levels were found to be high in hosts possessing no deoR or cytR repressors. Highest levels of hSOD expression were obtained with a high-copy-number plasmid regardless of the host used. Expressed hSOD can account for 35%–40% of total protein in E. coli.

Notes: Abstract Bacteriorhodopsin (bR), converted by deionization to the blue form was reconstituted to the active purple membrane by the addition of Fe2+ or Fe3+ ions. 57Fe Mossbauer spectra of these samples were measured at different pH values (pH 3.9, pH 5.0 and pH 7.0) and at temperatures ranging from 4 K to 300 K. The hyperfine parameters reveal two iron environments with oxygen atoms in the neighbourhood of iron. Iron type 1 is in the 3+ high spin state. It is bound to acid side chains of the protein and/or the phosphate groups of the lipids. Iron type 2 is in the 2+ high spin state and is linked to carboxy groups of the protein in a rather unspecific way. Dynamics as measured by Mossbauer spectroscopy show that the purple membrane becomes flexible only above 220 K. At the interface between membrane and bulk water the mobility is comparable to that of proteins with hydrophilic surfaces. The photocycle of Fe 3+-bR is slowed down compared to native bR. 3–5 Fe3+/bR are sufficient to inhibit the photocycle turnover by one order of magnitude. This specific effect is also found with Cr3+, though it is less pronounced. Mössbauer spectra of Fe3+-bR at 4 K reveal that iron nuclei are spin-coupled, indicating their close spatial proximity. It is proposed that iron trinuclear clusters interact with the proton uptake site of bR.

Notes: Abstract Rats have been enriched in 57Fe and erythrocytes were isolated from the blood. Mössbauer absorption spectroscopy on the hemoglobin of these erythrocytes has shown rather similar dynamics as found earlier in crystals of myoglobin, in frozen solutions of human hemoglobin and in a number of other proteins. The results strongly indicate that the motion of the heme and presumably some part of the F-helix is mainly influenced by the average viscosity of the sample determined by a network of hydrogen bridges and other weak interactions. Extrapolations of Mossbauer results from protein crystals to proteins in their physiological surroundings seem to be suitable for heme proteins.

Notes: Conclusion Boundary layer instabilities of low amplitudes have been successfully visualized on a flat plate in air very close to the wall. The high-performance seeding-system produces a homogeneous distribution of identifiable tracer particles. That provides the possibility for the future to apply non-intrusive optical velocity measurement methods like Particle Image Velocimetry to a boundary layer in air.

Folgende Minerale wurden beobachtet: Isoferro-Platin, Fe-Platin, gediegen Osmium, gediegen Iridium, Iridosmium, Rutheniridosmium, Osmiridium, Ru-Osmium, Os-Ruthenium, Cuprorhodsit, Guanglinit, Shandit, Tetrauricuprit, gediegen Gold, Bornit, HeazIewoodit, (Pt, Pd)2 Cu3, Pt(Cu, Au), (Ni, Pt)Sn, (Cu, Fe), (Pd, Rh, Pt)2+xS2, (Pt, Pd)4+xCu2As1−x.
Notes: Summary Platinum-group minerals were discovered, during gold recovery, in the Durance river alluvium, near Peyrolles (Bouches-du-Rhône). The PGM grains (average size 130 microns) are strongly flattened (average thickness 64 microns). The PGM concentrate consists primarily of (Pt, Fe) alloys (92%), (Os, Ir, Ru) alloys (3.5%), and native gold and (Au, Cu, Ag) alloys (4.5%). The following minerals were observed: isoferroplatinum, ferroan platinum, native osmium, native iridium, iridosmine, rutheniridosmine, osmiridium, ruthenian osmium, osmian ruthenium, cuprorhodsite, guanglinite, shandite, tetrauricupride, native gold, bornite, heazlewoodite, (Pt, Pd)2Cu3, Pt(Cu, Au), (Ni, Pt)Sn, (Cu, Fe)1−x (Pd, Rh, Pt)2+xS2, (Pt, Pd)4−xCu2As1−x. Isoferroplatinum contains numerous inclusions of alloys, sulphides, arsenides, Pd-tellurides, and partly devitrified silicate glass droplets. Most of the non-silicate inclusions also exhibit a drop-like shape indicating their original entrapment in a liquid state. Cuprorhodsite crystals (up to 20 microns) are associated with bornite included in Pt3Fe. Rarely, Pd- and Cu-sulphides, and Pd-tellurides appear in this association. Complex droplet-like arsenide inclusions in isoferroplatinum are composed of Pt bearing guanglinite and (Pt,Pd)4+xCu2As1−x. Native iridium shows exsolutions of Ir-bearing isoferroplatinum and (Pt,Pd)2Cu3. In places, concentrations of Sn (up to 3 wt.%) were observed in (Au, Cu) alloys. Shandite and (Ni, Pt)Sn inclusions occur in (Au, Cu, Ag) alloys. Silicate-glass inclusions are TiO2-poor and occasionally K-rich (plotting in the shoshonitic field). Taking into account mineralogical and chemical pecularities of the PGM association occurring in the studied concentrate, it seems highly probable that its primary source should be an Alaskan-type intrusion.

Notes: Abstract Deregulation and the recent advances in telecommunications technologies have significantly reduced the cost of transmission facilities. This reduction has made it attractive for corporation and government agencies to develop their own private line transmission networks. Previously, they would lease the particular transmission facility they required. If voice service were required, they would lease voice grade lines in the required quantities. If a 56 kbps line were needed, they would lease a 56 kbps line. With the emergence of low-cost transmission facilities and smart multiplexers, companies have found it economical to develop their transmission networks, manage the bandwidth and consolidate all their telecommunication requirements onto a single network which they manage and control. In this paper, we present a methodology we have used in designing these private line transmission networks.

Notes: Abstract An aqueous density-gradient column was used to study annealing effects in a series of epoxy resins. The crosslinking densities were varied via the monomer composition. The height of the specimens floating in the column was observed to change linearly with the square root of time during several days. The corresponding total density change typically amounts to 6 kg m−3, or 0.6%. By back-extrapolating the sample heights to time zero, accurate density values, uninfluenced by liquid absorption and other confounding effects, may be determined. Analysis of variance shows a residual error of 0.1 kg m−3, or 0.01 %, for the means of three specimens. Consistent density increases, ranging from 0.11 to 0.17%, were shown to occur upon annealing of the cured resins. The differences between samples of varying crosslinking densities were found to be significant.

Notes: Abstract In classical design, a low-order compensator is applied to a given plant. In this paper, we present an algebric construction of low (or fixed)-order compensators. Using the theory of root clustering, we achieve the following design requirements: closed-loop relative stability, relative stable compensators, and compensator's zero inclusion. In addition, we present a general robust analysis for real parameters. To reduce the computational difficulties, we suggest the use of low-order compensators.

Notes: Abstract An important (some say, the major) reason for using feedback control is the presence of uncertain parameters which are a natural part of any real dynamical model. In this paper, we consider uncertain constant parameters in a time-invariant linear plant and announce some new results concerning robust compensator synthesis. Using the min-max principle, we derive necessary conditions for fixed-order linear robust controllers assuring asymptotic stability or relative stability. These necessary conditions are an extension of the Lagrange multiplier method. This is achieved using a cost function based on the inverse of the so-called critical constraint. We present both matrix and polynomial versions; the latter allows controllers of fixed structure. We suggest a probability-one homotopy algorithm and solve some examples from the literature.
