    Notes: Abstract 1,3,5-triphenyl-1,5-pentanedione, C23H20O2, has been prepared and characterized by spectroscopic methods and single crystal X-ray analysis. Crystals are monoclinic, space groupP21/n, a=28.124(4),b=5.997(1),c=10.434(1)Å, β-98.42(1)Å,Z=4. The structure has been refined to a finalR-value of 0.040 for 1625 reflections withF o〉3σ(F o). The compound contains the two carbonyl groups in a mutuallycis arrangement.

    Notes: Abstract The aim of this study was to utilize pharmacokinetic techniques to assess the bioavailability of sandy or clay soil-adsorbed naphthalene vs chemical alone following dermal treatment of male rats. Animals were exposed to 43 μg total of 14C-naphthalene (pure or adsorbed to one of two soils) introduced into a shallow glass cap covering a 13-cm2 area on the skin of each rat. While both soils delayed the time to reach maximum plasma concentration of radioactivity and significantly increased the half-life of plasma absorption, only sandy soil significantly decreased the peak plasma concentration of radioactivity versus the pure compound. Within 12 h after dermal application, approximately 50% of the naphthalene dose was excreted in the urine of the pure and clay soil-adsorbed groups. However, when naphthalene was adsorbed to sandy soil, the percentages of the initial dose excreted in the urine collected between 0–12 h and 12–24 h were nearly equal (33–39%). Furthermore, sandy soil adsorption shifted the secondary excretion route from expired air to feces and significantly lowered the amount of radioactivity in expired air relative to naphthalene alone. In the presence of sandy soil, a significantly larger amount of radioactivity washed off of the skin application sites. In all groups the predominant urinary metabolites determined by high performance liquid chromatography were 2,7- and 1,2-dihydroxynaphthalenes.

The kinetics of base hydrolysis of the amino acid esters H2NCH2CO2Me·HCl, HOC6H4CH2CH (NH2)CO2Me·HCl, MeS(CH2)2CH(NH2)CO2Me·HCl, HSCH2CH(NH2)CO2Et·HCl, C3H3N2CH2CH(NH2)-CO2Me·2HCl and [—SCH2CH(NH2)CO2Me]2·2HCl in the presence of these complexes have been studied. The rate of hydrolysis is influenced substantially by these complexes and the second order rate constants are some 10–90 times greater than those obtained in the presence of simple metal ions.

Using a pH-stat method, the kinetics of base hydrolysis of the amino acid esters H2NCH2CO2Me·HCl (GE), (HO)-C6H4CH2(NH2)CO2Me·HCl (TE), MeS(CH2)2CH(NH2)-CO2Me·HCl (ME), HSCH2CH(NH2)CO2Et·HCl (CE), C3H3N2CH2CH(NH2)CO2Me·2HCl (HE) and [—SCH2-CH(NH2)CO2Me]2·2HCl (CysE) have been studied. The complexes enhanced the rate of hydrolysis substantially, the values of the second-order rate constants being some 10–50 times greater than those obtained in the presence of the simple CuII ion.

    Notes: Abstract To evaluate the role of parathyroids in calculus disease, the parathyroid hormone levels were determined in 22 control subjects and 42 stone (14 with bladder stone and 28 with kidney stone) patients. Serum calcium, inorganic phosphate, alkaline phosphatase and parathyroid hormone and urinary excretion of calcium and inorganic phosphate were determined. It was found that normocalcemic and normocalciuric stone patients had slightly higher levelsss of parathyroid hormone (irrespective of the site of the stone) and the difference was not statistically significant as compared with control subjects although some of the patients with calculus disease were hyperparathyroid. Serum alkaline phosphatase was increased while there was an increase in urinary calcium excretion in kidney stone patients and oxalate in all patients as compared with control subjects. The increase in inorganic phosphate was, however, not different from the control subjects. The subclinical hyperparathyroidism and stone formation in these patients are not correlated.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of film thickness on the optical and electrical properties of Cu-30 wt % GeO2-70 wt % thin cermet films prepared by electron-beam deposition at about 10−3 Pa and at a substrate temperature of 300 K is reported. The ultraviolet, visible and direct current (d.c.) conductivity results are analysed with the aim of determining the optical band gap,E opt, the width of the band tails,E e, and the d.c. thermal activation energy,E a. It was found that the optical energy gap increases with increasing thickness and that the absorption was due to indirect transitions ink-space. The general feature of the absorption edge remains similar for both unannealed and annealed films, but annealing has the effect of decreasingE opt. The d.c. conductivity results show thatE a decreases with increasing thickness. From a knowledge ofE opt andE a, a probable model of the electronic band structure in Cu-GeO2 thin films has been suggested.

    Notes: Abstract A multilevel design scheme for ship's hull girders (longitudinal members between two adjacent transverse frames) is presented in this paper. This design scheme handles, very conveniently, the complexity of using an optimization algorithm for such complex design problems having a large number of design variables, nonlinear constraints dealing with different failure modes and interactions among substructures, and nonlinear design objectives. The conventional multilevel design technique is modified by introducing an approach called constraint coordination to increase the probability of achieving the overall optimum very efficiently. The scheme is demonstrated by application to the structural design of hull girders with simple structural modelling to represent inland waterway ships on which there was a special emphasis in the original research project (Rahman 1991). Three possible panel (consisting of one stiffener and its attached plating) forms; tee stiffened, flat-bar stiffened and corrugated, are optimized to synthesize the hull girder in order to achieve the most efficient structure. The effect of price-structure (labour rate to material price ratio) on the design is also investigated.

    Notes: Summary Metathesis reaction of natural rubber was carried out using tungusten hexachloride and tetramethyl tin in chlorobenzene. The rubber had to be purified by several times precipitations before the reaction. Molecular weight decreased very much with the progress of reaction and with the increase of temperature. However, NMR studies indicated considerable decreases of carbon-carbon double bonds, which can not be explained by simple metathesis reaction. Some other reactions which consumed unsaturation have to be taken into account to elucidate the exact structure of resultant oligomers.
