Notes: Dynamic magnetic domain observation and eddy current loss of tape-wound cores are discussed up to 5 kHz. The cores are made of 17–22 μm thick (110)[001] oriented silicon steel strips. Dynamic domain patterns were observed by using SEM on the surfaces of the tape-wound cores. In order to distinguish the moving domain walls from the standing ones, the drive frequency of the core should not be integral multiples of the scan frequency of the SEM(50.0 Hz). The model which includes dynamic wall number, wall bowing, and velocity of each domain wall agreed comparatively well with the measured eddy current losses.

Notes: The effect of impurities on the tertiary recrystallization and magnetic properties of the thin (10 to 100 μm) silicon steels was investigated. For purification, the conventional grain oriented silicon steels, which were used as starting materials with a thickness of 0.30 mm were pre-annealed at 1200 °C in a vacuum of 1×10−3 Pa before cold rolling. In sheets without pre-annealing, the tertiary recrystallization was observed after annealing for at least 3 h over 1200 °C in a vacuum. On the other hand, in pre-annealed sheets, the tertiary recrystallization was completed within 10 min at an annealing temperature of 1150 °C in a vacuum. Through recrystallization, B8 increased to 1.95 T. Even in sheets annealed at 1050 °C, the B8 increased with increasing the annealing time, and became 1.95 T after anneals of 2 h. The pre-annealed sheets were also annealed in hydrogen atmosphere. In this case, at annealing temperatures over 1100 °C, the tertiary recrystallization was completed in less than 1 h. Using the purified sheets, silicon steels with B8 over 1.9 T can be obtained by short time and low temperature annealing in either a vacuum or a hydrogen atmosphere.

Notes: A new concept is proposed for the microactuation based upon magnetostriction. Magnetostrictive bimorph cantilever actuators and a traveling machine, composed of the magnetostrictive amorphous Tb-Fe and Sm-Fe thin films on a polyimide substrate, were fabricated. These actuators moved without power supply cables. The 3-mm-long cantilever actuator exhibited the large deflection above 100 μm in as low a magnetic field as 300 Oe and above 500 μm at resonant frequency in an alternating magnetic field of 300 Oe. Such unique characteristics suggest that magnetostriction is useful as the driving force of the microactuator.

Notes: Superconducting Ba2YCu3O7−y (BYCO)-Ag composite films with an (Ag/BYCO) molar ratio of 0.2 were prepared on SrTiO3(100) substrates by the dipping-pyrolysis process through heat treatments at 700–800 °C under a low-oxygen partial pressure (=2×10−4 atm) followed by O2 annealing. The product films were highly c-axis oriented and gave sharp rocking curves. High superconducting transition temperature Tc,zero(r) of 89 K and high critical current density Jc (77 K, 0 T) of 1.1×106 A/cm2 were obtained for a 0.9-μm-thick composite film heat treated at 770 °C.

Notes: Abstract Photoelectric observations of VW Cephei in R and I bands were made from 1989 to 1992. 17 primary minima and 11 secondary minima were covered, it is found from the present observations that the period abruptly changed aboutl990 and the maxima I and II exchanged between 1992 and 1993.

Notes: Abstract Oriented poly-p-phenylene sulphide (PPS) films (thickness 12 and 75 μm) and PPS powder were carbonized/graphitized after stabilizing by oxidation, in order to examine the effect of sulphur on graphitizability of the resulting carbons. The films and the powder resulted in carbons with a high and a low graphitizability respectively. An “in-plane oriented structure” of the PPS film was the most predominant factor to lead to a high graphitizability, and sulphur in the precursor did not lower the graphitizability when it was subjected to solid-phase carbonization. These phenomena are discussed on the basis of analytical data.

Notes: Abstract Uniformly-distributed fine particles of the compositions Bi2Ca2Sr2Cu3O x and Bi1.8Pb0.2Ca2Sr2Cu3O x have been prepared by the spray-pyrolysis method. The particles produced were spherical and their size could be controlled from submicrometer to micrometer by changing the concentration of the metal nitrates in the starting aqueous solutions. The crystalline phases of these particles were found to be greatly dependent on the oxygen partial pressure in the carrier gas, as well as the decomposition temperature. In the Bi2Ca2Sr2Cu3O x particles, the 80 K superconducting phase was only formed at around 800° C in nitrogen or low oxygen partial pressure, while the formation of the 80 K phase was further suppressed in the Bi1.8Pb0.2Ca2Sr2Cu3O x particles.

Notes: Abstract For simple depth selective conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy (CEMS) by using a He+CH4 proportional counter, a flexible and versatile CAMAC data acquisition system (KODAQ) which works on a popular Japanese personal computer PC9801VX (NEC) was applied. It is demonstrated that CEM spectra of the oxidized Fe thin film which is composed of Fe3O4, Fe1−xO and α-Fe metal are successfully obtained.

Notes: Damageless conditions in AES measurement were examined carefully on both thermally oxidized and photochemical vapour deposited amorphous SiO2 films as a function of dose rate and total dose. The lower dose rate resulted in the formation of a higher density of oxygen-deficient defects under the constant total dose condition. Among the films examined, it was found that F-doped films prepared by photochemical vapour deposition best resisted electron damage. The results are discussed using the model of defect generation consisting of a cascade process, bond breaking and diffusion of oxygen.

Notes: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to study the oxidation of Cu by oxygen plasma generated from a Kaufman ion gun. It was found that Cu was much less oxidized in co-evaporation with Ba or Nd compared to Cu-only evaporation when the total flux density of supplied metals and the oxygen plasma conditions were similar. It was also found that elemental Ba or Nd deposited on a CuO film at room temperature deoxidized the CuO.
