Notes: 180 MeV Cu11+ irradiation was done on the c-axis grain oriented Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 tapes. Irradiation enhanced hysteresis in dc magnetization curves, especially in high magnetic fields. The irreversibility line can be moved to higher field by irradiation. Transport Jc is also enhanced by the irradiation of the small fluences. The irradiation produced large (∼100 nm) and small (∼5 nm) defects. They are effective for flux pinning in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8.

Notes: In order to investigate low-energy excitations below 10 meV, inelastic neutron-scattering measurements have been carried out on various organic amorphous polymers at 10 and 50 K and three inorganic glasses at 150 and 295 K. It was found that a broad excitation peak is observed for all amorphous materials in the ω range of 1.5–4.0 meV irrespective of different chemical structures. On the other hand, highly crystalline polyethylene with a degree of crystallinity 0.96 shows no such broad peak, indicating that the low-energy excitation is characteristic of amorphous materials. We have employed an asymmetric double-well potential as a common origin for the low-energy excitation in amorphous materials and analyzed the results of amorphous polyisobutylene to confirm validity of this model and alternatively to determine parameters of the potential. Analysis of the temperature dependence of the inelastic-scattering intensity of the low-energy excitation leads to a concept of phonon-assisted tunneling in the asymmetric double-well potential.

Notes: Abstract The pH dependence of dispersion of titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles has been examined in the presence of surfactant molecules in water. Whereas particles were dispersed in water at acid and alkaline regions rather than at neutral region, the dispersion was enhanced at neutral region in an aqueous sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution and at acid and alkaline regions in an aqueous dodecyldimethylamine oxide (C12DAO) solution. Considering the pH dependence of zeta potential, the adsorption models of surfactant molecules on a particle were estimated on the basis of the modes of hemimicelle and double-layer compression. While the particles that adsorbed Al3+ were remarkably dispersed around pH 6, their dispersion does not largely depend on pH in the addition of SDS, indicating the adsorption of SDS molecules to form double-layer compression in the whole pH region. Dynamic light-scattering measurement and electron microscopic observation suggested that the particles were dispersed in water as small flocs.

Notes: Abstract Aqueous salt solutions of ionic surfactants in both spherical and rod-like micelles have been treated on the basis of a statistical thermodynamic theory, and the double logarithmic relationship between micelle molecular weight and ionic strength is derived for each micelle. Counterion binding on both micelles are assumed to occur specifically, and their degrees of dissociation are related to the slopes of the linear double logarithmic relations. It is found from the relationship observed for typical surfactants that the effective charge of spherical micelles is 29±4. The degree of dissociation of rod-like micelles of these surfactants is primarily determined by the counterion species, yielding values 0.8 for Na+, 0.4–0.6 for Cl− and 0.2–0.3 for Br−. Hydrophilic hydration of both micelles can be evaluated from the intercepts of the linear relations. Hydrophilic hydration acts repulsively in spherical micelles, while it is attractive or much less repulsive in rod-like micelles.

Notes: Abstract The spinnability was measured for aqueous viscoelastic solutions of tetradecyl- and hexadecyltrimethylammonium salicylates (C14TASal, C16TASal) in the absence and presence of sodium salicylate (NaSal) and sodium bromide (NaBr). The spinnability is classified into two types, D and C. While the intrinsic drawing length in type D is proportional to the drawing velocity, the drawing intrinsic length in type C decreases with the drawing velocity or is independent of it. The spinnability changes from type D to C, as the drawing velocity and the surfactant concentration increase, and the temperature lowers. The effect of salt is different between NaSal and NaBr. It can be assumed that a pseudo-network structure composed of rod-like micelles is formed in viscoelastic and spinnable surfactant solutions. Then, the spinnability depends on the balance between the elasticity and the viscosity in which the structure results.

Notes: Abstract Muon spin relaxation in zero field and longitudinal field was measured in single crystal samples of KH2PO4 (KDP) and KD2PO4 (DKDP) over a temperature range of 5 K to 300 K. At low temperatures, diamagnetic muons and muon substituted radicals with nuclear hyperfine coupling can be observed. For both KDP and DKDP, a minor change was observed in the dynamics of the muon below 140 K. Above 140 K, the mobility of the muon appears to increase and the diffusion rate becomes faster with increasing temperature. Only a small increase in the relaxation rate is observed in KDP due to the presence of theH +, suggesting that the relaxation effects probably originate from the31P.
