    Notes: Abstract Vibrio cholerae belonging to the recently described serogroup 0139, which are responsible for the current cholera epidemics in India and Bangladesh, were shown to express pilus-like structures partially cross-reacting with the toxin-coregulated pilus of V. cholerae strain (0395) belonging to the 01 serogroup and classical biotype. The 0139 pili were composed of 20 kDa subunit proteins which were antigenically related to the 20 kDa pilus protein of another diarrhoeagenic non-01 V. cholerae strain (serogroup 034) isolated earlier. The pili described in this study were found to be involved in the intestinal colonization process and, therefore, may contribute towards the virulence of the 0139 epidemic isolates.

    Notes: Abstract A clinical isolate of non-01 V. cholerae(10325) was shown to exhibit higher haemagglutination and intestinal adherence activities in vitro when grown in enriched media, such as trypticase soy broth (TSB) as compared to those of cells grown in a synthetic Tris-buffered or ‘T’-medium. A comparison of their cell-surface protein and lipopolysaccharide profiles suggested the involvement of a 20-kDa protein in the cellular adherence process. An antiserum, raised specifically against the 20-kDa protein, recognised pilus structures on the surface of TSB grown cells. Further studies showed that the pilus was morphologically as well as antigenically distinct from toxin coregulated pilus (TCP) or other types of pili expressed by both 01 and non-01 organisms. Inhibition data established the involvement of the 20-kDa protein in haemagglutination as well as intestinal tissue adherence activities of the parent organism.

    Notes: The dielectric function ε=ε1−iε2 of the YBa2Cu3O7−δ high-Tc superconducting films grown on (100) SrTiO3 (c-axis oriented) and (110) SrTiO3 (ab-oriented) substrate was measured by spectroscopic polarization modulation ellipsometry (SPME) and changes in film orientation were studied by comparing films of various thicknesses. The films deposited on SrTiO3 (100) substrates demonstrated an isotropic ε1 that changed with film thickness. It is observed that the decrease in the metallic dielectric behavior associated with the increase in the thickness of the films grown on (100) SrTiO3 substrates is mainly due to a change in the orientation of the films. The films deposited on SrTiO3 (110) showed anisotropic dielectric behavior when the plane of polarization is parallel and perpendicular to the c-axis of the film. These studies show that for this high-temperature superconductor with anisotropic dielectric behavior, SPME is a highly sensitive technique capable of measuring small changes in the film orientation.

    Notes: Schottky barrier diodes have been fabricated using poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT) as the semiconductor and indium as the metal. P3HT was doped with FeCl3 at room temperature to form a p-type semiconductor. The Schottky junctions of In on FeCl3-doped P3HT using pressure contact exhibit rectification ratios ranging from 104:1 to 106:1 at a bias of ±1 V.

    Notes: We have conducted magnetic relaxation experiments to calculate the effective activation energy, U, as a function of critical current density. We have shown that, from the nonlinearity of U, one can explain the nonlogarithmic decay of magnetization in type II superconductors. The nonlinearity of U was considered by expanding U about a current density, J0. The coefficients of expansion were determined experimentally and were used to develop the relationship between U and J for both conventional type II superconductors (Nb3Sn filamentary) and high-Tc superconductors (YBa2Cu3O7−δ and Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy single crystals). Both types of superconductor were observed to behave in similar fashion. We have also calculated U0 using the standard formulas and the intercepts of the tangent of the U vs M curve and have found the results to be comparable.

    Notes: The rotational motion of homonuclear diatomic molecules confined to two dimensions at finite temperatures is discussed within the framework of path-integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) techniques. For single rotators the symmetry restriction on the total wave function coupling nuclear spin and rotations of these diatomic molecules is carried over to PIMC for fermionic and bosonic diatomic molecules. Three experimentally relevant quantum statistical averages are formulated, and quantum effects due to discrete level spacing and exchange are separated with the help of these averages. The method is applied to single N2 and H2 rotators adsorbed on graphite in the frozen-in crystal field which is due to the commensurate ((square root of)3×(square root of)3)R30° "2-in'' herringbone phase. Contrary to H2, exchange effects are negligible for N2 in the relevant temperature range. The resulting sign problem for certain combinations of molecule and averaging procedure is discussed. PIMC simulations of the phase transition from the translationally (square root of)3-ordered and orientationally disordered phase to the herringbone phase were carried out for complete N2 monolayers without a symmetry restriction on the wave function. Due to dispersive quantum fluctuations, transition temperature and ground-state order parameter are depressed by roughly 10% as compared to classical MC simulations of the same realistic model. In addition, the PIMC results are compared to quasiharmonic and quasiclassical approximations. The quasiharmonic treatment yields the correct order parameter suppression, the quasiclassical simulation the lowering of the transition temperature, but only the full quantum PIMC simulations describe the entire temperature range of interest correctly.

    Notes: Abstract Spinel-quartz-cordierite and spinel-quartz are found as relic prograde assemblages in Fe-rich granulites from the Araku area, Eastern Ghats belt, India. Subsequent reactions produced orthopyroxene + sillimanite in the former association and garnet + sillimanite in the latter. The first reaction is univariant in the FMAS system, but is trivariant in the present case because of the presence of Zn and Fe3+ in spinel. The second reaction also has high variance because of Zn and Fe3+, but also because of the presence of Ca in garnet. Thermobarometry shows that the metamorphic conditions were approximately 950° C and 8.5 kbar and the fo2 was near the NNO buffer. In Fe-rich bulk compositions and low-P-high-T conditions of metamorphism, two of the univariant reactions around the invariant point [Sa], namely (Sa, Hy) and (Sa, Cd), change topology due to reverse partitioning of Fe-Mg between coexisting garnet and spinel. An alternative partial petrogenetic grid in the system FMAS is constructed for such conditions and is applied satisfactorily to several sapphirine-free spinel granulites. It is shown that bulk composition (XFe and Zn) exerts greater control on the stability of spinel + quartz than fo2. The effect of the presence of Zn and Fe3+ in spinel on the proposed grid is evaluated. Reaction textures in the Araku spinel granulites can be explained from the petrogenetic grid as due to near-isobaric cooling.

    Notes: Using the experimental data on Fe–Mg exchange between orthopyroxene and biotite of Fonarev & Konilov (1986), an orthopyroxene–biotite geothermometer is developed. The thermometer is corrected for mixing of Ti and Al in octahedral sites in biotite and also for non-ideal mixing of Fe and Mg in orthopyroxene. The thermometer is applied to several amphibolite–granulite transition facies and granulite facies rocks and also to mantle xenoliths. It yields consistent results in rocks of widely varying bulk composition, and highly magnesian mantle xenoliths. This thermometer removes the difficulty of estimating temperature in garnet-free rocks in high-grade terrains and also provides independent estimates of temperature in garnet-bearing assemblages.

    Notes: A suite of metapelites, charnockites, calc-silicate rocks, quartzo-feldspathic gneisses and mafic granulites is exposed at Garbham, a part of the Eastern Ghats granulite belt of India. Reaction textures and mineral compositional data have been used to determine the P–T–X evolutionary history of the granulites. In metapelites and charnockites, dehydration melting reactions involving biotite produced quartzofeldspathic segregations during peak metamorphism. However, migration of melt from the site of generation was limited. Subsequent to peak metamorphism at c. 860° C and 8 kbar, the complex evolved through nearly isothermal decompression to 530–650° C and 4–5 kbar. During this phase, coronal garnet grew in the calc-silicates, while garnet in the presence of quartz broke down in charnockite and mafic granulite. Fluid activities during metamorphism were internally buffered in different lithologies in the presence of a melt phase. The P–T path of the granulites at Garbham contrasts sharply with the other parts of the Eastern Ghats granulite belt where the rocks show dominantly near-isobaric cooling subsequent to peak metamorphism.
