Notes: Abstract We study the free fermion gas at finite temperature and chemical potential in the lattice regularized version proposed by Hasenfratz and Karsch and by Kogut et al. Special emphasis is placed on the identification of the particle and antiparticle contributions to the partition function. In the case of naive fermions we show that the partition function no longer separates into particle-antiparticle contributions in the way familiar from the continuum formulation. The use of Wilson fermions, on the other hand, eliminates this unpleasant feature, and leads, after subtracting the vacuum contributions, to the familiar expressions for the average energy and charge densities.

Notes: Abstract Let ℓ = A 4 1 (49) be the 4-arrangement in real projective 4-space that includes all 24 facet hyperplanes of the 24-cellT, its 24 hyperplanes of mirror symmetry, and the hyperplane at infinity. In this paper we show that ℝ is theonly simplicial 4-arrangement formed by including some of the hyperplanes of mirror symmetry and possibly the hyperplane at infinity with the 24 facet hyperplanes ofT. Only one other simplicial 4-arrangement is known that does not lie in a natural sequence of arrangements that are simplicial in each dimension. Two of the simplicial 3-arrangements induced by X were not previously in the literature, so 19 joinirreducible simplicial 3-arrangements are currently known.

Notes: Abstract In 1971, Branko Grünbaum noted that the projectived-arrangements formed by including with the facet hyperplanes of a regular polytope in Ed some of its hyperplanes of mirror symmetry and possibly the hyperplane at infinity might be expected to be simplicial. In this paper we show that none of the 4-arrangements so associated with either the 120-cell or the 600-cell inE 4 is simplicial.

Notes: Summary Bark proteins of eight temperate hardwoods were analyzed by SDS-PAGE at monthly intervals to determine whether an accumulation of specific proteins, potential storage proteins, occurred in the fall at the time of leaf senescence. Storage proteins were identified as proteins that accumulated during the fall and were present in reduced amounts in the summer. Total protein levels were higher in the winter than in the summer in Fagus sylvatica, Fraxinus americana, Tilia americana, Alnus glulinosa, Betula papyrifera and Querus rubra, but not in Gleditsia triacanthos or Robinia pseudoacacia. Betula contained the most abundant storage protein, although in all species minor bands, which fluctuated seasonally, could be identified. With the exception of Alnus and Betula, results generally correlated with previous microscopy studies of these tree species, which showed varying amounts of protein storage vacuoles present in phloem parenchyma cells during the winter, but not during the summer.

Notes: Abstract The independent and interactive effects of nutrient concentration and epiphyte grazers on epiphyte biomass and macrophyte growth and production were examined in Zostera marina L. (eelgrass) microcosms. Experiments were conducted during early summer, late summer, fall, and spring in a greenhouse on the York River estuary of Chesapeake Bay. Nutrient treatments consisted of ambient or enriched (3× ambient) concentrations of inorganic nitrogen (ammonium nitrate) and phosphate. Grazer treatments consisted of the presence or absence of field densities of isopods, amphipods, and gastropods. epiphyte biomass increased with both grazer removal and nutrient enrichment during summer and spring experiments. The effect of grazers was stronger than that of nutrients. There was little epiphyte response to treatment during the fall, a result possibly of high ambient nutrient concentrations and low grazing pressure. Under low grazer densities of early summer, macrophyte production (g m−2 d−1) was reduced by grazer removal and nutrient enrichment independently. Under high grazer densities of late summer, macrophyte production was reduced by enrichment only with grazers absent. During spring and fall there were no macrophyte responses to treatment. The relative influence of epiphytes on macrophyte production may have been related to seasonally changing water temperature and macrophyte requirements for light and inorganic carbon.

Notes: Summary This study follows the maturation of the pollen grain of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), particularly the development of the vegetative cytoplasm and the various storage products formed. CTEM, HVEM, stereoscopy, and cyto-histochemistry were used to examine the events occurring during the 9 days before anthesis. Starch began to accumulate in plastids at anthesis minus 9 days and reached a peak concentration shortly before anthesis; lipid deposition followed a similar pattern, but started at 6 days before anthesis. Lipid bodies were always seen closely oppressed to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Dictyosomes appear active during the entire 9 days; first producing vesicles involved in the formation of the intine and, later, producing vesicles stored in the pollen grain. The dictyosome vesicles appear to contain polysaccharides and concentrate in layers around the lipid bodies. Ribosomes increase in number from 6 days before anthesis and are particularly numerous in the mature pollen. From anthesis minus 6 days until anthesis, the ER cisternae become increasingly inflated and, in the hours immediately before pollen release, form pockets filled with lipid bodies and dictysosome vesicles. The mature pollen has a core region filled with ER pockets and a peripheral cytoplasm in which such pockets are generally lacking.

Notes: Summary The seasonal occurrence of protein-storage vacuoles in parenchyma cells of the inner bark and leaf tissues of seven softwood species was examined. Previously published results showed that these organelles often fill the phloem parenchyma cells of the inner bark tissues in overwintering hardwoods, whereas they are absent from this tissue during the summer. We hypothesize that the organelles are involved in the storage of reduced nitrogen during wintering, in a manner analogous to protein bodies of seeds. A survey of the phloem and cambial parenchyma tissues in six evergreen softwood species (Pinus strobus, P. sylvestris, Picea abies, P. glauca, Abies balsamea, and Thuja occidentalis) and in one deciduous softwood species (Larix decidua) was conducted. There was a large variation in the degree and timing of protein-storage vacuole formation between the individual genera and species. The organelles were not seen in summer samples of inner bark tissues of any of the genera or species examined. Protein-storage vacuoles were common in the bark tissues of Pinus, Abies and Thuja, occasionally seen in Picea, and rarely found in Larix during the winter. One-year-old leaves were also examined, since in all but Larix they are overwintering structures and can act as potential sites of nitrogen storage. Protein-storage vacuoles were present in Pinus and Thuja leaf tissue in both summer and winter, in Abies during winter only, and were absent from Picea leaf tissue at all times. These results indicate that the formation of protein-storage vacuoles prior to overwintering is not a ubiquitous phenomenon in softwoods.

Notes: Abstract Ergosta-5,7,24(28)-trien-3β-ol (trienol)6 was isolated from the intracellular symbiotes (symbiotic microorganisms) of the planthoppers,Nilaparvata lugens andLaodelphax striatellus. The steroidogenic end product of the symbiotes was found to depend on the environmental conditions, i.e., although trienol6 was produced under symbiotic conditions, ergosterol4 was formed in aerobic culture. When the normal diet was replaced by a steroiddeficient artificial one, the ratio of 24-methylenecholesterol5 to total insect sterols was significantly increased. The above study offers further corroborating evidence for our assumption that the host insects require 24-methylenecholesterol5 as an alternate source for cholesterol1 under certain environmental conditions. In our previous biotransformation experiments, 24methylenecholesterol5 was shown to be an immediate precursor of cholesterol1. However, the complexity of the insects' vital functions hindered all subsequent attempted transformations into cholesterol1 of sitosterol2, trienol6, and ergosterol4, under injection conditions.
