Notes: The variety of flow regimes (steady separated, periodically separated-‘Karman vortex street’, unsteady turbulent) and their characteristic peculiarities (separation and reattachment points, secondary separation, boundary layer, instability of the shear mixing layer, etc.) require the construction of effective numerical methods, which will be able to simulate adequately the considered flows.MERANGE ≡ SMIF-a splitting method for physical factors of incompressible fluids1-is used for calculations of the steady and unsteady fluid flows past a circular cylinder in a wide range of Reynolds numbers (10° 〈 Re 〈 lo6). The finite-difference scheme for this method is of second order accuracy in the space variables, has minimal numerical viscosity and is also monotonic. Use of the Navier-Stokes equations with the corresponding transformation of Cartesian co-ordinates allows the calculations to be made by one algorithm both in a boundary layer and out of it. The method allows calculations at Re = ∞ cc and simulation of d‘Alembert’s paradox. Some results on the classical problem of the flow around a circular cylinder for a wide range of Reynolds numbers are discussed. The crisis of the total drag coefficient and the sharp rise of the Strouhal number are simulated numerically (without any turbulence models) for the critical Reynolds numbers (Re ≈ 4 × 105), and are in a good agreement with experimental data.

Notes: This paper introduces a model of a woven monolayer composed of two orthogonal fibres and describes an optimization technique including a fracture condition. The first fracture behaviour of the material containing a local break is analysed. The description of the stress-state in the local break vicinity is reduced to the determination of a special form of the Green function for simultaneous finite-difference equations. The problem allows the analytical solution for unknown functions in terms of Fourier series. The solution of the problem shows that the fracture behaviour of the material depends on the presence of stabilizing tension of fibres parallel to the crack direction. The model is used for establishing an optimization model and for applying an optimization procedure including strength conditions.

Notes: A simple and robust boundary triangulation algorithm is proposed and, based on it, completely automatic Delaunay mesh generation procedures are developed. The algorithm is equally applicable to convex, non-convex and multiply connected planar domains. In this approach, given the nodes, the number of triangles formed is precisely known and any desired control over mesh generation is possible.

Notes: A new partitioned solution procedure for the direct time integration of second order coupled-field systems is presented and it is applied to the problem of soil-pore fluid interaction. The necessary convergence analysis for the iterative method is carried out and the fulfilment of the convergence condition is achieved with the introduction of two suitable auxiliary matrices in the basic equations governing the dynamic phenomena. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and the versatility of the proposed solution procedure.

Notes: The paper proposes an iterative technique with a similar multi-grid operator for solving complex spatial bounctary value problems. The description of the method and efficient vectorial algorithms based on a simple ctata structure applicable to solving three-dimensional engineering problems are presented. The discussion of the method's convergence includes theoretical grounds and practical aspects. We give a general proof of convergence and consider the model cases to estimate the rate of convergence. We also address the histories of convergence derived from the numerical tests and consider two examples of practical problems.

Notes: This paper presents the development of a cyclic symmetric approach to the complete stress, free vibration, transient and stationary response analysis of rotating tuned bladed disc systems taking into account all the complications involved. Starting from Biezeno's approach to the analysis of individual blades and discs, the continuing development of different methodologies and their limitations as applied to practical systems are discussed. The advantages, versatility and usefulness of the present approach are demonstrated by means of the results obtained for a number of cases both by theoretical and experimental means.

Notes: A PC-based system for modelling of convection in enclosures on the basis of the Navier-Stokes equations is described and a number of test results are given. New examples of mixed convection in a square chamber and thermal convection in ordinary and porous (isotropic and anisotropic) vertical layers are presented which may be of interest in civil and building engineering.

Notes: In the paper we have developed a new formulation for solution of structural-acoustic coupling problems by boundary elements using the multiple reciprocity method. It is assumed that the structure is composed of plate components and is excited by the external or the internal noise source. The efficiency of the proposed formulation becomes especially remarkable if the boundary-value problem is to be solved repeatedly for different values of frequency. The accuracy of the numerical computations has been compared with the analytical solution in a test example.

Notes: A new approach to developing serendipity quadrilateral infinite elements is presented. Using these elements universal matrices for quasiharmonic equation are developed. For a particular member of the family these matrices are independent of the size and shape of the element. Using these matrices the element stiffness matrix can be generated in a simpler manner by taking into account the size and shape of the element.

Notes: A theoretical analysis has been developed to study the crosstalk in crossed bundles of parallel lines. The model is based on the theory of the coupled transmission lines and the resulting system of differential equations has been solved by means of the finite difference, time-domain (FDTD) method. The frequency response of the network has been achieved by the discrete fourier transform (DFT) algorithm; measurements, performed with a vectorial network analyser, show a good agreement with numerical simulation.
