Notes: Abstract Binocular responses have been recorded extra-cellularly at 58 sites in the barn owl's (Tyto alba) visual Wulst. Neurons showed disparity tuning to stimulation with moving bars, moving sinewave gratings and a moving visual-noise stimulus. Responses to sinewave gratings as a function of disparity were cyclic, with the period of a cycle of the response being correlated to one cycle of the stimulus. Cyclic responses were also found when bars or noise were used as a stimulus, but, especially in response to visual noise, one response peak, the main peak, was different from the other peaks, the sidepeaks: usually, the main peak was either higher or narrower or both higher and narrower than the sidepeaks. When the responses to different spatial frequencies were compared, response maxima coincided at the main peak, but not at the other peaks. In analogy to auditory physiology the disparity at which the frequency-independent peak occurs is termed ‘characteristic disparity’. Spatial-frequency tuning revealed broad tuning, ranging from 1 to more than 3 octaves at 50% of the maximal response. Disparity tuning was broad at the onset of the response and sharpened later. The data are discussed within the framework of a model for the neural representation of visual disparity that was derived from a model proposed earlier for the representation of interaural time difference, the main cue for encoding sound-source azimuths in the barn owl.

Notes: Abstract A sensitive interferometric technique has been applied for studying the thermal displacement of thin film heated by electron or ion beams. The steady state displacement has been measured and we discuss the dependence on material properties and film thickness showing that this method has a potential for in-situ monitoring of thin-film deposition or etching. Transient effects are studied in a thin quartz plate and the propagation velocity of thermal waves is measured.

Notes: Abstract Spherically imploding detonation waves propagating in a stoichiometric propane-oxygen mixture in a convergent hemispherical space having an innerdiameter of 800 mm were experimentally investigated with an intention to clarify the reason for the anomalous increase of the pressure and temperature behind the imploding detonation waves observed in a smaller vessel having an inner-diameter of 360 mm. The relations between the radial distance of the detonation front, the peak pressure, spectroscopic temperature at the imploding detonation front and those behind the shock waves reflected from the implosion focus show almost the same tendencies as in the smaller convergent space. The pressure as well as the temperature at the imploding detonation front increases, with the propagation of the implosion, more rapidly than theoretically estimated. The reason for it is attributed to the double imploding detonation waves.

Notes: Abstract Carbon/J-polymer single fibre composite samples were tested under tensile conditions with the fibre direction perpendicular to the tensile loading axis. The Poisson ratio effect induced a compression strain field in the fibre, resulting in a fragmentation phenomenon similar to that observed in a fibre subjected to tensile loading. This observation introduces a novel technique for the measurement of the compressive strength of single fibres, calculated either from the stress at first break, or from the Weibull scale parameter obtained from the fragmentation data produced at various stress levels. The special sample loading configuration used here also provides the first measurement of the effect of the length of the fibre on its compressive strength value.

Notes: Summary Dopaminergic interplexiform cells in retinae of glass catfish were investigated using an antiserum against tyrosine hydroxylase and peroxidase-anti-peroxidase (PAP) visualization. In whole-mount preparations, we observed a homogeneous distribution of cell bodies throughout the retina without any indication of regional specializations. At the ultrastructural level, we studied the morphology of labelled telodendria within the outer plexiform layer. Apart from contacts with horizontal cells and bipolar cell dendrites, we report for the first time direct contacts with cone pepdicles and rod spherules. Quantitative evaluation of short series of sections showed that all cone pedicles, and a major part of the rod terminals, were approached in this way. The dopaminergic pathway terminating on photoreceptors is discussed in the context of pharmacological effects of this transmitter in the distal retina during light adaptation, i.e., cone contraction, spinule formation and horizontal cell coupling.

Notes: Abstract We describe a van der Waals approach with multiple order parameter for surface melting near the triple pointT T which is based on density functional theory for bulk freezing. The occurrence of surface-induced melting, non-melting or blocked (incomplete) melting is governed by the specific form of the long-ranged tail in the interparticle potential. In the case of melting, the residual crystallinity at the vapor side of the quasi-liquid layer is shown to decay with a stretched exponential (power) law inT T -T for long-(short-) ranged interparticle forces

Notes: Abstract We study various consequences of crystalline ordering in one-component (ordinary and surface) plasmas of arbitrary dimension, especially its relation to the poor decay of the pair correlation function. We considerably improve and presumably optimize the various known bounds on its decay at infinity and scrutinize the usual arguments claiming absence of crystallization in two-dimensional plasmas.

Notes: Abstract Since the predictions of the capillary wave model (CWM) are often claimed to be universally valid, we scrutinize its microscopic foundations and discuss the legitimacy of the necessary approximations. We show that there may very well be regimes where the CWM is inadequate and demonstrate how to treat such scenarios. As the CWM—despite of its lack of microscopic foundation—seems to be supported by its appealing scaling properties (ind〈3), we examine the scaling behavior also ford=3. It turns out that the CWM ind=3-especially the corresponding direct correlation function and several of its descendants—is plagued by various pathologies which exclude a proper scaling limit in the usual sense. In connection with these features we critically comment upon recent work of Weekset al., presenting a markedly deviating interpretation of the phenomena which emerge wheng goes to zero.
