    Notes: A technique was developed to surface immobilize plant cells and was scaled up in laboratory size bioreactors. This technique was shown not to hinder the biosynthetic potential of Catharanthus roseus immobilized cells and to induce a partial release (300 μg/L) of serpentine into the culture medium contrary to suspension cultured cells. The release pattern seemed to follow the biosynthesis trends of the product. This release mechanism could be stimulated by a factor of 10 within 2 h by increasing the pH of the culture from 5.0 to 5.5.

    Notes: The scaleup of the technique of plant cell surface immobilization was performed successfully in specifically designed laboratory size bioreactors. The immobilizing matrix was formed into a vertically wound spiral providing for a high immobilizing area-to-volume ratio (0.8-1.2 cm-1). A modified airlift and a mechanically stirred vessel delivered a best bioreactor performance characterized by low biomass frothing and highly efficient plant cell attachment and retention (≥96%). The growth of Catharanthus roseus cells investigated in these bioreactors was found not to be mass transfer limited. It required mild mixing and aeration levels (kLa ∼ 10-15 h-1). The biomass formation pattern of surface immobilized plant cells generally exhibited a linear growth phase followed by a stationary phase characterized by the presence of residual carbohydrates in the medium, contrary to suspension cultures. This behavior was found to depend on the plant cell type and/or line cultured, as well as on the inoculum age. The space restriction and unidirectional growth of the SIPC biofilm combined with the limited availability of essential intracellular nutrients rapidly accumulated from the medium by the stationary phase inoculated plant cells all likely contributed to the culture behavior.

    Description: A low-power cathodoluminescence (CL) mosaic of a 1x2 cm section of the Murchison CM chondrite contains chondrules of two types: one contains olivines with red CL and is thought to be the equivalent of group A chondrules of Sears et.; and one without observable CL, which is probably equivalent to their group B chondrules. Both types of chondrule contain dust mantles with a characteristic uniform red CL due to very fine-grained forsterites, but the mantles of group A chondrules have a complex internal structure and are much thicker than the relatively thin rims on the group B chondrules. The variety of internal textures and the progressive integration of the objects with the surrounding matrix suggests to us that these features are large group A chondrules in the process of being destroyed by aqueous alteration. Prior to aqueous alteration, group A chondrules in CM chondrites were larger than group B chondrules, which is contrary to the situation in ordinary chondrites and were apparently destroyed more rapidly than group B chondrules by aqueous alteration.

    Description: Like Semarkona (type 3.0), Krymka (type 3.1) contains two distinct types of chondrule (namely groups A and B) which differ in their bulk compositions, phase compositions, and CL properties. The group A chondrules in both meteorites show evidence for major loss of material by evaporation(i.e. elemental abundance patterns, size, redox state, olivine-pyroxene abundances). Group A and B chondrules probably formed from common or very similar precursors by the same processes acting with different intensities, group A suffering greater mass-loss by evaporation and reduction of FeO and SiO2. While Krymka chondrules share many primary mineralogical and compositional properties with Semarkona chondrules, the minimal metamorphism it has suffered has also had a significant effect on its chondrules.

    Description: We report here the discovery of a recent meteorite shower in Antarctica, the members of which have very high natural thermoluminescence levels. It is apparent from these data that the shower has been on Earth only a short time (approximately 1000 years) and the meteorite probably came to Earth through rapid (less than 10 exp 5 years) evolution from an orbit with perihelion greater than 1.1 AU, similar to Amor asteroids. Only a very small number of meteorites, including a few modern falls, appear to have had similar orbital histories.

    Description: The H-chondrites have been the subject of several recent controversies, including the question of whether Antarctic and non-Antarctic meteorites are or are not the same and whether there or is not evidence for stratigraphic layering in the original parent body. We have identified two distinct groups of H5 chondrites in the Antarctic collection. One group has induced thermoluminescence (TL) peak temperatures less than 190 C and metallographic cooling rates between S to 50 K/Myr, similar to modern falls. It also has a variety of cosmic ray exposure ages, many being greater than 107 years. The other group has TL peak temperatures greater than 190 C, metallographic cooling rates of 100 K/Myr and cosmic ray exposure ages of 8 Ma. The members of this group were generals smaller than those of the greater than 190 C group (including the mode falls) during cosmic ray exposure. Detailed study of the cosmogenic nuclide concentrations of these groups indicates that they are not solely the result of pairing of a few unusual meteorites. It is likely that the greater than 190 C group was an important part of the H-chondrite flux about 1 million years ago, but has since decreased in importance relative to the less than 190 C group. In a previous work, we discussed several possible origins for the greater than 190 C group, including multiple H-chondrite parent bodies, unusual parent body structure, and creation during the 8 Ma event. In this paper, we present new data for H4 chondrites in light of these ideas.

    Description: The question of whether chondrules behaved as open systems during formation is crucial to our understanding of both chondrule and chondrite formation. The very large range of chondrule types is best summarized by the compositional classification scheme, wherein the primitive chondrule groups (i.e., those not produced by metamorphic processes) are A1, A2, A5, and B1. In the Semarkona (LL3.0) chondrite, 10.5%, 25.0%, 5.0%, and 56.9% (by number) of the chondrules are groups A1, A2, A5, and B1, respectively. We argue that groups A1 and A2 were produced by reduction and evaporation during chondrule formation of material originally resembling group B1 chondrules.

    Description: The Antarctic meteorites LEW87057, LEW87220, LEW87223, LEW87234, LEW87237, and LEW87285 were described as paired E3 chondrites by Brian Mason (Antarctic Meteorite Newsletters, 12(1) and 15(1,2)). LEW87223 is texturally unusual, containing abundant chondrules and jagged troilite grains which are enclosed in metal. Our INAA data show that the siderophile element abundance in two splits of LEW87223 are higher than the EH range, while chalcophile elements (Cr excepted) are highly depleted. Mineral compositions are unlike those normally found in EH or EL chondrites or aubites, and in some respects resemble those of several anomalous enstatite meteorites such as Shallowater, Mt. Egerton, and Happy Canyon. The bulk and mineral compositions are consistent with the addition of EL chondrite metal to an EL3 chondrite with the removal of sulfides other than troilite which is now Cr-rich. We suggest that this meteorite is an EL3 chondrite into which metal was introduced and sulfides redistributed during an event involving impact melting and brecciation.

    Description: An analysis is presented of the equations of motion for steady MHD shock waves proopagating in interstellar clouds, for boundary conditions that preclude C shocks. In addition to J shocks, in which the neutral fluid component becomes subsonic at an adiabatic jump front, the equations admit a new class of solutions, called C-asterisk shocks, in which the transition to subsonic flow occurs continuously at a sonic point. Numerical methods are developed for computing the structure of J and C-asterisk shocks propagating in diffuse interstellar clouds. The effects of chemical, ionization, and recombination processes are included in this treatment. An alternative numerical method, which uses artificial viscosity to facilitate integration through sonic points, is analyzed and shown to be invalid. A set of exemplary solutions, computed for realistic shock parameters, shows that C-asterisk shocks occur for a broad range of conditions relevant to diffuse interstellar clouds.

    Notes: In the series of analytical techniques for identification of chemical substances, infrared spectrometry presents by far the highest information content. However, the information is most complicated too. It concerns a multitude of band positions, band intensities and band shapes, which, moreover, can be disturbed by matrix and other effects. The high redundancy, however, allows conclusions to be made by a qualitative, subjective procedure.IR is often used to prove the equality between a sample and a reference material, e.g. in quality control of a production process. In forensic control, the question to be answered is mostly not to prove equality, but whether or not the presence of a compound in a sample, e.g. a drug, can be proved. Moreover, testing has to be performed according to objective rules.To fulfil these requirements, a new retrieval algorithm, the ‘Adequate Peaks Search’, is presented. It concerns representing the reference spectra by sets of adequate peak positions and the sample spectrum by a set of all peak positions, whereafter the cross-sections of the sample set and the reference sets are determined. The concept ‘adequate peak’ is defined and criteria have been formulated to evaluate the results into a positive (presence of the analyte is proved) or negative (presence is not proved) conclusion.The detection limit when the Adequate Peaks Search (APS) method was applied was four to seven times lower than that attained by a number of experts.
