    Notes: A new method is proposed for investigating surface phenomena based on the observation of the acoustic vibration modes of surface structures at high resolution. Experimental SAWR spectra can be obtained under a narrow frequency band excitation (Δω/ω ∼ 10-5) in a wide range (100 kHz-10 MHz). Application of this method to Ag(111) and Pt(100) single crystals reveals the existence of very narrow resonant acoustic vibration modes with Δω/ω ∼ 10-3-10-4 demonstrating strong anomalies in the phonon energy distribution function of solids. The behaviour of these anomalous peaks is very sensitive to surface structure and to the presence of adsorbates.

    Notes: The photophysics and photochemistry of N-amino-substituted pyridinium salts were investigated. Electron transfer from the amino group to the pyridinium ring takes place in the singlet excited state. The fluorescence quenching and photoreactivity of these compounds is conditioned by this process. Irradiation of N-aminopyridinium salts in solution leads to novel fused heterocycles or to triphenylpyridine, depending on the concentration of the initial compound. Free radical intermediates are involved in the photoreaction.

    Notes: Poly(o-phenyleneditelluride) 6 has been prepared by the reduction of 1,2-bis(trichlorotelluro)benzene obtained by treatment of 1,2-bis(trimethylsilyl)benzene with TeCl2. The reduction of 6 with NaBH4 in ethanol solution affords sodium benzene-1,2-ditellurolate, which, upon treatment with methylene bromide, forms benzo-1,3-ditellurole in 40-47% yield. Benzo-1, 3-ditellurole has also been synthesized in 18-20% yeild by the reaction of 1,2-bis(trimethylslyl)benzene with bis(trichlorotelluro)methane, with subsequent reduction of the product, 1,1,3,3-tetrachlorobenzo-1,3-ditellurole.

    Notes: The power characteristics of electron-beam-pumped emitters based on II-VI compounds have been stukdied. The use of a microrelief with direction-selective reflective properties instead of a totally reflecting miror has made it possible to provide effective sukppression of closed non-characteristics and efficiency of lasers and to make them suitable for obtaining generation with high efficiency in a number of media, in particular YAG:Nd3+, KGW:Nd3+ and Lif:F2+ (OH), at room temperature.

    Notes: Ten embryonic stem (ES) cell lines from mink blastocysts were isolated and characterized. All the lines had a normal diploid karyotype; of the ten lines studied, five had the XX and five had the XY constitution. Testing of the pluripotency of the ES-like cells demonstrated that (1) among four lines of genotype XX, an X was late-replicating in three; both Xs were active in about one-third of cells of line MES8, and analysis of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase revealed no dosage compensation for the X-linked gene; (2) when cultured in suspension, the majority of lines were capable of forming “simple” embryoid bodies (EB), and two only showed the capacity for forming “cystic” multilayer EBs. However, formation of ectoderm or foci of yolk sac hematopoiesis, a feature of mouse ES ceils, was not observed in the “cystic” EB; (3) when cultured as a monolayer without feeder, the ES cells differentiated into either vimentin-positive fibroblast-like cells or cytokeratin-positive epithelial-like cells (less frequently); neural cells appeared in two lines; (4) when injected into athymic mice, only one of the four tested lines gave rise to tumors. These were fibrosarcomas composed of fibrobalst-like cells, with an admixture of smooth muscular elements and stray islets of epithelial tissue; (5) when the ES cells of line MES1 were injected into 102 blastocyst cavities and subsequently transplanted into foster mathers, we obtained 30 offspring. Analysis of the biochemical markers and coat color did not demonstrate the presence of chimaeras among offspring. Thus the cell lines derived from mink blastocysts are true ES cells. However, their pluripotential capacities are restricted. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Description / Table of Contents: The effect of terminal groups on the properties of composites on the basis of poly(phenylquinoxaline) (PPQ) and graphite has been studied by sedimentation analysis, viscosimetry, and mass spectrometry. The deviation from equimolarity druing the synthesis of PPQ without the filler leads to the formation of linear macromolecules with a wide range of molecular masses. The presence of the filler neither affects macromolecular branching during the synthesis, nor the crosslinking and grafting of polymer chains onto the graphite surface. PPQ composites with amino groups at the ends of the macromolecules are characterized by higher wear resistances and smaller friction coefficients than those with keto group or both keto and amino groups. The best tribochemical properties are obtained with PPQ composites syntehsized in the presence of excess tetramine with benzyl substituted terminal amino groups.
    Notes: Mittels Sedimentation, Viskosimetrie und Massenpektrometrie wurde der Einfluß der Endgruppen auf die Eigenschaften von Polymerkompositionen auf der Basis von Poly(phenylchinoxalin)en (PPC) und Graphit untersucht. Die Synthese von PPC führt bei nichtäquimolarem Verhältnis der Ausgangskomponenten ohne Füllstoff zu linearen Makromolekülen mit breiter Molmassenverteilung. Auch der Zusatz des Füllstoffs bewirkt weder Verzweigung der Makromoleküle noch Vernetzung und Propfung der Polymerketten auf die Graphitoberfläche. Die Untersuchung der tribochemischen Eigenschaften der komposite zeigt, daß die mit Aminogruppen terminierten PPC im Vergleich zu mit Carbonylgruppen terminierten eine höhere Verschleißestigkeit und einen niedrigeren Reibungskoeffizienten aufweisen. Die besten Werte liefern PPC-Komposite, die mit einem Überschuß an Tetramin synthetisiert und deren Aminoendgruppen durch Reaktion mit Benzil verkappt wurden.

    Description / Table of Contents: Die kinetischen und strukturellen Effekte einer Matrix bei der Acceptor-katalysierten Polyveresterugn in Gegenwart eines Füllstoffs wurden systematisch untersucht. Der Füllstoff übt auf die Reaktivitäten von aromatischen und aliphatischen Hydroxylverbindugnen einen unterschiedlichen Einfluß aus, was sich in der Mikrostruktur der synthetisierten Copolyester widerspiegelt. Die Zugabe des Füllstoffs während der Polymersynthese führt zu höherer Molekülmasse und verbessert das Reibungsverhalten des gefüllten Systems.
    Notes: A systematic study has been carried out on the kinetic and structural matrix effects in acceptor-catalytic polyesterification conducted in the presence of fillers. The filler exerts a different influence on the reactivity of aromatic and aliphatic hydroxylated compounds, which is reflected in the microstructure of the synthesized copolyesters. Filler introduction at the stage of polymer synthesis is established to raise its molecular mass characteristics and to improve the antifrication properties of filled systems.

    Description / Table of Contents: Die Alkylierung von Poly(5-vinyltetrazol) mit Dimethylsulfat und tert-Butylalkohol sowie Alkylhalogeniden RHal (R=CH3, C2H5, CH2—CH=CH2, n-C4H9 und t-C4H9) und die Kinetik dieser Reaktion wurden untersucht, um eine neue Herstellungsmethode für tetrazolhaltige Polymere mit wertvollen Eigenschaften zu entwickeln. Die vergleichenden Untersuchungen über die isomere Zusammensetzung und die spektroskopischen Daten von Poly(N-alkyl-5-vinyltetrazol)en, die durch die Alkylierung von Poly(5-vinyltetrazol) sowie durch die Copolymerisation der entsprechenden Monomeren hergestellt wurden, wurden mit IR-, 1H-NMR- und 13C-NMR-Spektroskopie durchgeführt. Der Alkylierungsumsatz beträgt bis zu 99,8%; dadurch können polymere Produkte erhalten werden, deren Zusammensetzung, Struktur und Eigenschaften denen der Homo- und Copolymeren sehr ähnlich sind.
    Notes: Alkylation of poly(5-vinyl tetrazole) with dimethyl sulfate and tert-butyl alcohol as well as with alkyl halides RHal (R=CH3, C2H5, CH2—CH=CH2, n-C4H9, t-C4H9) has been studied under various conditions in order to develop a new method of synthesis of tetrazole-containing polymers having a complex of valuable properties. The kinetic study of the process and comparison of isomeric compositions and spectroscopic characteristics (IR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR) of poly(N-alkyl-5-vinyl tetrazole)s synthesized by alkylation of poly(5-vinyl tetrazole) and of those prepared by (co)polymerization of the corresponding vinyl tetrazoles have been carried out. The alkylation is found to proceed to high conversion extents (up to 99.8%) and enables to obtain a wide variety of polymeric products having the composition, structure and properties very similar to those of homo- and copolymers.
