Notes: The understanding of the performance of the quarter-point and transition elements is of considerable importance as these singular elements are widely used in linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) analyses. However, a number of issues remain unresolved although numerous investigations into their performance have been conducted. In particular is the question of optimum quarter-point element and transition element size. This study examines several aspects in relation to the size effect by performing a large number of numerical analyses on several standard problems. Interpretation of the numerical results was aided by the use of two concepts, the ‘zones of dominance’ and ‘zones of representation’. This study proposes a means of explaining the errors in stress intensity factor computation through the interaction between both types of zones. Consequently, a number of new and significant observations were made regarding the singular elements' performance. This study concludes with some recommendations for the application of these elements.

Notes: In conjunction with the quarter-point element, a wide range of stress intensity factor computation techniques may be employed. Of these, the displacement correlation technique (DCT) and the quarter-point displacement technique (QPDT) have been in common use. It has been suggested by various investigators that the DCT is more rational in formulation and should therefore be more accurate than the QPDT. However, published numerical studies provide conflicting results on the relative performance of either technique. To resolve this anomaly, this study provides a detailed investigation on the DCT and QPDT performance. On the basis of considering the second term in Westergaard's expression and supported by numerical experiments, it is concluded that the QPDT would generally perform better than the DCT.

Notes: Singularly perturbed second-order elliptic equations with boundary layers are considered. These may be considered as model problems for the advection of some quantity such as heat or a pollutant in a flow field or as linear approximations to the Navier-Stokes equations for fluid flow. Numerical methods composed of central-difference operators on special piece-wise-uniform meshes are constructed for the above problems. Numerical results are obtained which show that these methods give approximate solutions with error estimates that are independent of the singular perturbation parameter. An open theoretical problem is posed.

Notes: When the erosion or growth of a surface that occurs in semiconductor device processing can be considered as everywhere continuous in space and time, the equations of motion of the surface may be specified and determined numerically using a kinetic model of surface evolution. In this review the fundamental concepts of the kinematic model of surface evolution are discussed. Detailed consideration of the theory of characteristics reveals its limitations which are overcome by recent theoretical development based on the Huygens principle of wavefront reconstruction. Correct interpretation of the nature of the basic wavelet, coupled with contemporary ideas of surface and edge propagation, form the essence of a new numerical algorithm. Numerical analysis and consequent numerical procedures derived from the generalized kinematic model are presented. Examples of surface evolution, with particular reference to ion beam induced erosion are given to show the advantages and potential of the method as opposed to existing models and theoretical prediction. When evolution processes are discontinuous and localized, other approaches, particularly those that use numerical modelling, are required. Such approaches are also reviewed here.

Notes: The state and output equations of the overall networks are derived from the state and output equations of individual multiports and knowledge of the interconnections between them. A generalized lumped-distributed L/D multiport is described by its associated state, output and non-linear equations in the time domain. Any network can be considered as composed of a set of multiports and independent sources. These equations have been incorporated into a computer-aided procedure for the analysis of L/D networks. The procedure can be used for the simulation of any non-linear microwave circuit and offers the facility of developing a multiport equivalent circuit for any linear or non-linear device or subcircuit. Several examples are successfully analysed using the developed general program.

Notes: This paper presents a new finite element formulation in the Laplace domain for both diffusion and wave equations with applications in the field of electrical engineering. With the aid of congruence transformation of matrices, the finite element equations in the Laplace domain are solved and time-domain results can be obtained through the inverse Laplace transform. In a test problem, good agreement between the numerical results derived with the present method and the analytical solutions has been found. For applications in which only Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions are involved, this new finite element approach can be applied and provide both frequency-domain and time-domain results in one run without any timestepping scheme. The limitations of using the congruence transformation in solving propagation problems are also addressed in this paper.

Notes: Bounds on eigenvalues of various finite element systems are analysed by using an element eigenvalue theorem together with the Global Eigenvalue Theorem. Both two dimensional continuum dynamics and heat conduction problems are considered. These bounds provide stable time steps for explict time integration schemes. A reduced eigenproblem at element quadrature point level, with all zero eigenvalues suppressed, is also presented in this paper. The simplified eigenproblem results in simple formulas for calculating the eigenvalues.

Notes: The theoretical prediction of elastoplastic behaviour of single crystals is a basic problem which is central to the prediction of the overall behaviour of the crystal aggregate. It is generally well known that quasi-static and isothermal plastic deformation in single crystals arises almost solely from slip on specific crystallographic planes, and that this process occurs when the resolved shear stress on a critical slip system reaches a certain maximum value. What is not obvious is how one can identify the specific slip systems activated by a given load increment, since the process usually involves selection from a pool of linearly dependent slip systems. In this paper we use small-deformation multisurface plasticity theory to phrase properly the problem of crystal slips at infinitesimal increments. We then describe an ‘ultimate’ algorithm for systematically identifying the active slip systems at finite increments. We arrive at the following major conclusions when the ultimate algorithm is applied to f.c.c. crystals: For perfectly plastic crystals the combination of active slip systems may or may not be unique; however, the imposition of the discrete Kuhn-Tucker conditions is sufficient to determine the (unique) final crystal stresses. For Taylor hardening crystals in which active and latent slip systems harden by the same amount, the discrete Kuhn-Tucker conditions are also sufficient to make the mathematical problem of crystal stress integration well posed, i.e. the final stresses can be determined uniquely albeit the combination of active slip systems may not be unique. To illustrate the latter point, an accurate return-mapping algorithm for perfectly plastic and Taylor hardening crystals is described and tested against the ultimate algorithm to demoustrate numerically that it is possible to generate different combinations of active slip systems and yet produce identical final stresses.

Notes: Quadratic B-spline finite elements are defined for a graded mesh. Hermite infinite elements are proposed to extend the applicability of these finite elements to unbounded regions. Test problems used to compare this technique with published procedures show that the quadratic B-spline finite element solution has, as expected, lower error bounds than a linear element solution. These experiments also demonstrate that the Hermite infinite elements used to close the B-spline finite element arrays lead to error norms comparable in size with other infinite element formulations. The generation of solitary waves in a semi-infinite shallow channel by boundary forcing is modelled by the Korteweg-de Vries equation using an array of graded elements closed by a zero pole infinite element. The resulting simulation of solitary wave motion across a non-uniform mesh confirms existing work and illustrates the effectiveness of the present formulation.
