    Notes: Results of Shubnikov–de Haas (SdH), cyclotron resonance (CR), and Hall-effect measurements on δ-doped InSb:Si films grown by molecular-beam epitaxy on insulating InP substrates are reported. The investigation covers samples with sheet densities of Si dopant atoms ranging from 1×1011 to 1×1013 cm−2, temperatures from 4.2 to 300 K, and fields from 0 to 7 T. The SdH oscillations show that the samples contain electrons of two-dimensional nature, occupying multiple subbands. The effective masses obtained from the CR data correspond well to the subband occupation densities. The Hall measurements as well as the CR experiments also give evidence for the presence of additional electrons, with the conduction-band-edge mass m*=0.014m0 of bulk InSb, which exist presumably in the bulk of the films.

    Notes: We have synthesized zirconium nitride/aluminum nitride multilayered thin films with a reactive sputtering technique. The electrical transport and optical properties of these multilayers have been examined by resistivity, Hall effect, and near-normal incidence reflectance and transmittance measurements. We show the existence of a metal-to-insulator transition and strong increase of Hall coefficient at small wavelength of composition modulation. The optical response of the multilayers is systematically modified from the behavior of the individual constituents. The measured optical response is in qualitative agreement with a simple effective-medium theory.

    Notes: The influence of neutron irradiation on the thermal conductivity κ of diamond films fabricated by hot filament (HF) and microwave plasma assisted (MPA) deposition has been studied. The additional thermal resistivity induced by irradiation is similar to that found in single crystal diamond and is due mainly to the formation of clusters of disordered carbon material. Despite a significant difference in κ prior to irradiation, the thermal conductivity of the HF and MPA films is almost the same after a cumulative dose of 2.7×1017 neutrons cm−2.

    Notes: We describe the use of accumulation layers of electron charge in applications as magnetoresistive devices. We consider two such systems: an InGaAs/InP heterostructure in which we identify a two-dimensional electron gas from the observation of the quantum Hall effect, and InAs films, in which a strong surface accumulation of charge is inferred from depth profiling studies of the galvanomagnetic coefficients. Magnetoresistive devices fabricated from these materials exhibit outstanding field sensitivity and temperature stability due to the existence of electrons of relatively high density and mobility in the accumulation regions. We also model the magnetosensitivity of our devices.

    Notes: We have measured the thermal conductivity κ of single crystals of hexagonal silicon carbide (6H-SiC) of two different electron densities n. The densities are low such that virtually all of the heat is conducted by lattice vibrations. At low temperatures the thermal conductivity of both samples varies as T2 and scales with the electron density. The calculated phonon mean free path thus varies as T−1 and is consistent with a model of scattering of the heat-carrying phonons by electrons in an impurity band.

    Notes: The presence of defects in diamond induces one-phonon infrared absorption which is not allowed in the perfect crystal due to symmetry. Concomitantly the thermal conductivity is reduced by additional phonon-defect scattering. For single crystal diamonds irradiated with fast neutrons, we find a correlation between the one-phonon absorption and the room-temperature thermal conductivity valid over three orders of magnitude in defect concentration. This relation holds for both unannealed and annealed crystals for which the detailed configuration of defects is different, as well as for a synthetic diamond film containing a similar type of disorder. Infrared absorption can thus be used to determine the thermal conductivity of diamonds containing vacancy-related defect centers.

    Notes: We have investigated the thermal conductivity of large diamond samples grown by both hot filament and microwave plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition in order to study in detail the processes limiting heat conduction in this system. For samples containing nearly 100% diamond material and no apparent defects, the thermal conductivity is consistent with that expected for polycrystalline diamond with a given crystallite size. In films prepared by the hot filament technique, we observe an additional scattering of phonons near 60 K, which we attribute to either a resonant phonon-defect interaction, or a crossover from geometrical to Rayleigh phonon-defect scattering.

    Notes: The influence of grain boundary scattering of lattice waves in high quality diamond films has been determined by the measurement of thermal conductivity down to 0.15 K. We find that the mean free path for lattice vibrations (phonons) exceeds substantially the crystallite size and approaches the physical size of the sample. This implies that a significant transmission of phonons occurs between the grains of these polycrystalline diamond materials.

    Notes: Abstract Budesonide, a corticosteroid used in the treatment of asthma and allergic reactions, is almost entirely cleared by metabolism in man. We describe the sulphation of budesonide in human liver and lung and provide evidences that the sulphation of budesonide is catalysed by testosterone sulphotransferase. A rapid and reproducible radiometric assay for budesonide sulphotransferase is described. Liver specimens were obtained from 35 men and 65 women and lung specimens from 2 women and 17 men. The average hepatic budesonide sulphation rate was significantly higher in men (41.1 pmol·min−1·ml−1) than women (28.2 pmol·min−1·mg−1). In the lung, the mean budesonide sulphation rate was 5.0 pmol·min−1·mg−1. Testosterone strongly inhibited the hepatic sulphation of budesonide, whereas p-nitrophenol and dopamine were poor inhibitors; the IC50 was 7.0 uM (testosterone), 320 uM (p-nitrophenol) and 510 uM (dopamine). The hepatic rates of testosterone, p-nitrophenol and dopamine sulphation were measured in the same samples assayed for budesonide sulphotransferase. There was a correlation between the hepatic rates of budesonide and testosterone sulphation (P〈0.001; r=0.810). The activity of testosterone sulphotransferase was significantly greater in men than women (22.0 vs. 17.2 pmol·min−1·mg−1), wheres those of dopamine and p-nitrophenol sulphotransferase were not sex dependent. The hepatic activity of budesonide sulphotransferase parallels that of testosterone suggesting that sulphation is an important reaction in the metabolism of budesonide.

    Notes: Summary In experimental animal models nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may influence gastrointestinal motility, but as evidence is lacking in man. The effect of diclofenac sodum 75 mg i.m. on the motor response of the upper gastrointestinal tract to food has been studied by manometry in 9 healthy volunteers. Diclofenac had no effect on the motor activity of the stomach, duodenum, or jejunum after a 605 kcal meal.
