Notes: Abstract Two ways of rate control for diaphragm pacing are proposed. One is rate control using only the patients' body temperature (method I). The other is rate control by both the patients' heart rate and body temperature (method II). To test the effectiveness of these methods, a diaphragm pacemaker which can be controlled by both heart rate and body temperature has been developed. It was applied to nine mongrel dogs. The pacing rate is controlled by atrial blood temperature (method I) or by both heart rate and temperature (method II). The animal's metabolism was elevated by the administration of a pyrogenic drug. It was found that method I is not suited to rapid changes in metabolism; however, it is useful in extreme metabolic elevation. An animal's metabolism was supported by using method II in all ranges of metabolism. This method proved more effective than method I for rate-responsive diaphragm pacing.

Notes: Abstract Drosophila moriwakii Okada & Kurokawa (Diptera; Drosophilidae) generally has only one generation per year and enters aestivo-hibernal reproductive diapause in Sapporo, northern Japan, but a small fraction of the population produced a second generation in summer at a place where breeding resources were abundant. In this species, diapause seems to be controlled by flight activity. When flies were cultured in cages in which they were able to fly freely, they entered diapause irrespective of photoperiod, but they did not do so at long daylengths when cultured in small vials in which they were prevented from flying. Furthermore, flies with wings removed did not enter diapause at long daylengths even if they were cultured in the cages.

Notes: This paper describes the development of a non-destructive inspection method for cracks in a trolley conveyor chain, using a high-frequency electric current heater and an infrared radiation camera. This method is based on the idea that cracks affect heat conduction in the chain. When the chain is heated properly with the heater, variations in the heat conduction can be detected by monitoring the surface temperature of the chain with the infrared camera. The effectiveness of the proposed method is shown by a numerical analysis of the heat conduction in the chain. It is confirmed that the method is applicable to the chain which consists of portions with high and low emissivity, and that it is not affected by oil mixed with wear debris on the chain surface or by the operation speed of the conveyor.

Notes: Abstract Using a SrCeO3-based proton conducting ceramic as a solid electrolyte, a high temperature hydrogen pump was constructed and the performance was examined at 650–800° C. The limiting diffusion current was measured as a function of hydrogen partial pressure at the anode by a potential sweep method with an automatic iR-compensation system. The limiting current density was a good measure of stable operating conditions for the hydrogen pump.

Notes: Abstract B,B,B-triaminoborazine (TAB), a molecular precursor for boron nitride (BN), was prepared by amine-exchange reaction of B,B,B-tris(diethylamino)borazine with liquid ammonia in a pressure bottle. The1H NMR spectrum of TAB purified by sublimation revealed that TAB forms a dimer in solution with coordination between B and N atoms at four sites. When TAB was directly pyrolyzed up to 1800°C, hexagonal or turbostratic BN was formed. TAB underwent thermal condensation at 100–200°C to form an oligomeric condensate, which was compressed to a circular disk and sintered to a BN ceramics.

Notes: Abstract Cyclotri(trifluoroethoxy, acryloyloxy-ethyleneoxy)phosphazene compound is synthesized from the cyclic trimer of dichlorophosphazene by replacing two CI atoms with trifluoroethoxy and acryloyloxy-ethyleneoxy groups. This compound was polymerized by UV irradiation with the aid of a photosensitizer. The polymerization proceeds in the acrylate group by opening the double bond. Whereas the matrix polymer is an insulator at low temperatures, it is a semiconductor at high temperatures. Namely, the conductivity is 8.84×10−9 S/cm at 19.2°C and 1.17×10−6 S/cm at 75.0°C. Both dielectric constant and dielectric loss increase with increasing temperature and with decreasing frequency. The conductivity of the cyclotri(trifluoroethoxy, acryloyloxy-ethyleneoxy) phosphazene monomer is higher than that of the corresponding polymer and the dielectric constants are higher at lower frequencies. These results are consistent with the existence of a charge transfer complex.

Notes: Abstract Solution properties of water-soluble synthetic polymer, 3,3-ionene and 6,6-ionene chloride and bromide disolved in water-acetone mixtures up to acetone content 50 wt% were investigated. Their partial molar volumes V 2 o and partial molar adiabatic compressibilities K s o were determined. Ionic additivity of V 2 o with respect to the cation of backbone polymer chain and the counter-anion was confirmed quantitatively. The ionic additivity of V 2 o is discussed along with the K s o in their relation to the counterion binding of ionene polymers. Effects of ionic sites on the ionene are strong but they don't break the solvation layer.

Notes: Abstract Effective acid sites for the dehydration of 2-propanol and isomerization of 1-butene were found to be generated by glass formation of calcium metaphosphate. The number of these sites with strong acidity remarkably decreased by the crystallization of the glass, where the condensation of hydroxyl groups were significant. Thus, the sites must be the monohydrogen phosphate protons.
