    Notes: The crystal Structure of [Fe(η6-mesitylene)2](PF6)2 (1) is reported. The Structure is intricately disordered with the Fe-atom occupying an m3m cubic site, but nonetheless the conformation and bonding is confirmed. The structure is discussed in the general context of FeII sandwich complexes.

    Notes: Graft copolymers of butyl rubber (BR) with polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF) were prepared from bromobutyl rubber by a cationic “grafting-from” reaction initiated by silver perchlorate at allylic bromine sites on the rubber. By studying the influence of variables, such as temperature etc., it was shown that initiation at -20°C for 30 min, followed by polymerisation at 0°C with a [AgClO4]/[Br] ratio of ca. unity, produced near optimum reaction conditions with grafting efficiencies 〉90%. Copolymers containing upto 40% of grafted PTHF were obtained by this means. The BR-g-PTHF copolymers have a two-phase morphology comprising amorphous BR with crystalline domains of PTHF which function as points of reinforcement in the rubber upto ca. 300 K.

    Notes: Pressure drops, gas holdup, and mass-transfer coefficients were measured in two concentric-tube airlift reactors of 30 and 300 L (nominal volume). The aspect ratio and the ratio of riser to downcomer cross section were the same for both reactors, but the geometry of the gas separation section was different. The influence of the bottom and top clearances was studied using water and carboxymethyl cellulose solutions and covering a range of effective viscosity from 10-3 to 25 × 10-3 Pa·s. The pressure drop results expressed as a Euler number were satisfactorily correlated with Fr, Ga, and a bubble disengagement group M. Correlations are presented also for the gas holdup in the riser, downcomer, and gas separator. The last-mentioned coincides with the correlation for the total holdup in the reactor. The gas-liquid mass-transfer coefficients for all the liquids and geometric variables in both reactors were successfully correlated as Sherwood numbers.

    Notes: Electron-capture negative ion chemical ionization (EC-NICI) and field desorption (FD) mass spectrometric techniques were utilized to examine polyfluorinated C60. Two different samples from the same preparation, one prior to sublimation and the other sublimed material, were investigated. From the raw non-sublimed product in EC-NCI six series of ions corresponding to different numbers of attached oxygen atoms were obtained, which are represented by the formula [C60F2nOm]-, where n ranged from 0 to 30 and m from 0 to 5. The sublimed material in EC-NICI produced the same six series of ions with up to 48 fluorine atoms attached to C60. The field desorption of the same sample produced similar results, but the signal-to-noise ratios of the spectra were low. Both samples, in the two different techniques examined, yielded C60F60 ions with only an even number of fluorine atoms attached. The present investigation, for the first time, provides direct experimental evidence for the existence of higher fluorinated C60 up to C60F60 and multiple oxides of polyfluoro-C60 with up to five oxygen atoms attached.

    Notes: The architecture of the starch granule, and its subsequent disruption due to the application of heat and water, known as gelatinization, is of wide interest. Small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) techniques have been used to study gelatinization in limiting and excess water. SAXS allows the absorption of water into the differing regions of the starch granule to be monitored. In excess water, a process of cooperative melting can be seen. In limiting water, the crystalline order melts at a higher temperature. These features have been studied, and observed features of the gelatinization related to those known from other techniques. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Two types of aliphatic poly(ester-amides) (PEAs) were subjected to microbial degradation in basal mineral salt broth, under the attack of a yeast, Cryptococcus laurentii, at 20°C. PEA-I copolymers were made by the anionic ring-opening copolymerization of ∊-caprolactone and ∊-caprolactam, whereas PEA-II copolymers were synthesized by a two-step polycondensation reaction of hexanediol-1,6, hexanediamine-1,6, and adipolyl chloride. These copolymers were found to be readily degradable under biotic conditions, based on weight loss, GPC, NMR spectroscopy, and tensile property measurements. Compared to abiotic hydrolysis, biodegradation occurred much faster under milder conditions. Furthermore, NMR spectroscopic analysis proved that the biodegradation of poly(ester-amides) involves the enzymatic hydrolysis of ester groups on the backbones of polymers into acid and hydroxyl groups. No breakdown of amide bonds was observed under the given biotic conditions. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Two new cyanosilicones, poly[(dicyanopropyl)dimethylsiloxane] A and poly[(dicyanopentyl)dimethylsiloxane] B, have been synthesised by reaction of the corresponding disilanols with phosgene generated in situ from triphosgene. Both polymers show glass-to-rubber transitions at about 250K and crystalline melting points at about 310K. Polymers A and B undergo thermal decomposition at 410 and 550K respectively.

    Notes: Solutions of lithium perchlorate in a low molecular weight ethylene oxide/propylene oxide (EO/PO) co-polymer were studied by differential scanning calorimetry. The pure co-polymer was found to crystallise partially, while addition of the salt impaired crystallisation first by slowing crystal growth then by slowing nucleation. At high salt concentrations (∼1·0 molal) no crystallisation occurred. The solvation of Li+-ions and the introduction of ‘transient crosslinking’ between cations and anions effectively suppresses the separation of the polymer into microregions of EO and PO. The crystallisation phenomena are relevant to the use of these copolymers as ‘model’ polymer electrolyte systems.
