Notes: A thermodynamic calculation is conducted to determine the distribution of hydrogen atoms absorbed in a one-dimensional palladium rod, along which a temperature gradient is imposed. The rod is assumed to be completely sealed, so that the total number of the hydrogen atoms is conserved regardless of its thermal conditions. A model calculation based on a zeroth-order interaction model predicts that upon the imposition of the gradient, the hydrogen distribution will significantly change from its initial uniformity. The profile of the redistributed hydrogen can be discontinuous at one point on the rod. The concentration gap developed at this point of temperature T implies that the two-phase region in the palladium hydride phase under the thermal equilibrium is nonexistent under the nonequilibrium condition. Similar to the disappearance of the two-phase region above the critical temperature, the concentration gap is reduced with an increase of the temperature gradient.

Notes: It is well known that the signal output intensity from a dye laser oscillator depends directly on the pump intensity. The opposite effect, the dependence of the transmitted pump intensity on the signal intensity, is studied in detail. The theoretical results are compared with experimental data obtained using an argon-laser-pumped rhodamine 6G dye laser.

Notes: Single crystals of mixed methyl-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-aminopropanoate (MAP): 2-methyl-4-nitroaniline (MNA) have been grown from solution using a 40:60 mixture of ethanol and ethyl acetate. Formation of an equimolar complex is confirmed by x-ray diffraction studies. The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21. The lattice parameters are a=6.9196(±0.005) A(ring); b=7.673(±0.008) A(ring); c=18.554(±0.001) A(ring); and β=92.547(±0.006)0. b axis is the unique twofold axis and there are two molecules per unit cell. The molecules stack along the b axis with MAP atop MNA atop MAP. Details of the molecular orientation are given. The Raman spectra also indicate that the parent molecules are not disturbed in the process of crystallization. The second harmonic generation efficiency of the new material for 1064 nm laser radiation is observed to be the same as that of MAP but lower than that of MNA. The latter is attributed to the absorption at 532 nm in the mixed crystal. The melting point determined by differential scanning calorimetry is 104.30 °C.

Notes: The effects of pump polarization on the performance of synchronously pumped mode-locked dye lasers have been investigated. A semiclassical model is derived and the numerical results are compared with experimental data. The theoretical pump polarization dependencies of the pulse shape, pulse width, peak power, and pulse delay have been determined, and experimental data obtained with an argon-pumped rhodamine 6G dye laser are in good agreement with the theory.

Notes: Based on a theoretical estimation, a simple new scheme to generate high-dose, steady-state neutrons is presented. This new high-dose neutron source makes use of the plasma ion implantation, which consists of a cylindrical palladium rod saturated with deuterium atoms and immersed in a deuterium or tritium plasma. The plasma is contained by a grounded conducting chamber. The palladium rod is connected to a high-power modulator, which provides a series of negative-voltage pulses. During these negative pulses, deuterium or tritium ions fall into the palladium rod and collide with the deuterium atoms in it, initiating fusion reactions and emitting neutrons. This neutron device will be portable, reliable and almost free from radiation hazards except for the neutrons themselves. For reasonable system parameters allowed by present technology, we find from a theoretical calculation that the average neutron production rate 〈dN/dt〉 = 2.3 × 1012 s−1 for D-T reaction, which may be more than enough for most applications. The average neutron production rate for D-D reaction is two order of magnitude less than that for D-T reaction.

Notes: Capacitor-stored energy is transferred to a wire conductor surrounded by a mixture of a reactive metal powder and water. The overload current pulse quickly explodes the small wire conductor, initiating a chemical reaction in the mixture. The discharge after the explosion is made through a highly condensed state undergoing chemical reaction (producing both heat and hydrogen gas). In this type of discharge the heat and gas from the reaction help the reacting medium maintain some conductance necessary for effective dissipation of the electrical energy. The coupling of the discharge to the reaction is found to be crucial to sustain the reaction.

Notes: The preparation and properties of 120-K Tl-based high-temperature superconducting thin films on LaAlO3 substrates are reported. These films are obtained by post-annealing 2Tl: 2Ca: 2Ba: 3Cu: 10O precursor films at (approximately-equal-to)890 °C in a sealed quartz tube filled with (approximately-equal-to) 1-atm O2. Results of ac susceptibility measurements show a sharp drop in the real part of the susceptibility (χ') and a sharp maximum peak in the imaginary part of the susceptibility (χ‘) at a temperature close to the observed zero resistance Tc of (approximately-equal-to) 120 K. The broadening of the transition width in χ' and the decrease in the temperature where χ‘ maximum appears are found to occur at a slower rate with increasing ac field for these films than for the films deposited on Y-ZrO2 and MgO and having a similar zero resistance Tc. This weaker field dependence of χ' and χ‘ is shown to lead to a higher critical current density for the films deposited on LaAlO3 substrates. The higher critical current density is attributed to a stronger coupling between the grains arising from the absence of the formation of well-defined grain boundaries during film growth.

Notes: Laves phases of NdFe2, Nd(Fe0.5Co0.5)2, SmCo2, and Sm(Fe0.5Co0.5)2 stoichiometries were prepared using a rapid solidification technology. Low temperature magnetic properties show ferromagnetic behavior for Nd(Fe0.5Co0.5)2, SmCo2, and Sm(Fe0.5Co0.5)2. Laves compounds, while a sort of antiferromagnetism has been suggested for the supposed NdFe2 compound. This rapidly solidified NdFe2 alloy is believed to consist of an unstable rhombohedral NdFe7 phase plus fine particles of a Nd-rich phase. Some evidence of a phase transition from the mixture of unstable NdFe7 compound plus Nd-rich to Nd2Fe17 plus Fe-Nd-O phase are obtained after annealing the NdFe2 alloy. The ternary Laves compound, Sm(Fe0.5Co0.5)2, exhibits a high coercivity of 4 kOe at room temperature with a Curie temperature of 400 °C, while the Nd(Fe0.5Co0.5)2 compound shows a magnetic moment of 3.0–3.5 μB.

Notes: The thickness dependence of electrodynamic properties of Tl2Ca2Ba2Cu3Ox films has been examined after correction for geometrical effects. The surface resistance increases for very thin or thick films as is consistent with the presence of a poorly superconducting layer (phase inclusions or morphology breakdown) as was detected with magnetization measurements. The temperature dependence of surface resistance has been examined at low temperatures and fitted to a multigap model. There was reasonable agreement for moderate thickness films, suggesting why such films have been and will be excellent for applications, while the behavior of other thicknesses may be dominated by grain boundaries.

Notes: The formation of a Laves phase, Nd(Fe,Co)2, in Nd(Fe0.92−xCoxB0.08)5.5 magnets prepared by powder metallurgical processing of melt-spun powders has been confirmed. The Laves phase forms after crystallization in melt-spun alloys when x is larger than 0.17, and is likely to occupy 15 vol % of the sintered magnet when the Co content x is 0.22. "Two-phase'' magnets of Fe77Nd16B7+(5–20 wt. %) NdFe2 were prepared by rapid solidification and powder metallurgy. As the volume fraction of rapidly solidified Laves phase NdFe2 (actually a mixture of NdFe7 compound plus Nd-rich phase) increased, the magnetic properties, particularly for coercivity, were found to decrease.
