    Description: We present spectroscopic observations of some 115 stars of the cluster Blanco 1, extending from the Ca II(H,K) region to the Ca II(I-R) triplet, supporting an age similar to that of the young cluster alpha Persei. The H-alpha absorption equivalent with vs (B - V) diagram forms a well-defined locus, with decreasing absorption equivalent width for decreasing effective temperature, akin to solar neighborhood dwarfs. A large spread in the Ca II surface flux, as a function of (B - V), also indicates the presence of a high degree of surface inhomogeneity, synonymous with high magnetic activity in young stars. A drop-off in the Ca II flux at (B - V) = 1.0 is also similar to the solar neighborhood stars, and shows that the primary chromospheric cooling changes from the Ca II and Mg II lines to the Balmer lines. The mean chromospheric temperature for stars at 4800 K lies between 8000 K and 10,000 K, based on theoretical models, which is somewhat higher than the older solar neighborhood dwarfs. The high mean Ca II surface flux of the sample is also consistent with that of other young clusters. We were able to measure the equivalent width of the Li(6708) line, whose strength as a function of (B - V) indicates an age similar to the young cluster alpha Persei. The lithium abundance decreases with decreasing effective temperature, consistent with the premise of lithium depletion in stars with larger convection zones. Using published photometry and a recent Zero Age Main Sequence (ZAMS) fitting method, we also re-define the distance to the cluster to be 246 pc.

    Description: A photographic atlas of polar-ring galaxies and related objects is presented. The atlas includes kinematically confirmed polar-ring galaxies (category A), good candidates based on their morphological appearance (category B), possible candidates (category C), and possibly related objects (category D). New photometric and kinematic observations are reported for several galaxies in the catalog, including observations that show that UGC 7576 and UGC 9796 ( = II ZW 73) are S0 galaxies with polar rings. Roughly 0.5 percent of all nearby S0 galaxies appear to have polar rings. When corrected for various selection effects (e.g., nonoptimal viewing orientation, possible dimming, or limited lifetime of the ring) the percentage increases to about 5 percent of S0 galaxies which have, or have had a polar ring.

    Description: AM Her objects exhibit periodic, quasi-periodic, and aperiodic variability on timescales ranging from seconds to years. Here, we investigate a process for the production of aperiodic and quasi-periodic accretion rate fluctuations. We consider the nonlinear dynamical model known as the dripping handrail (DHR). The DHR, basically a model for certain types of spatially extended systems and loosely based on water condensing on and dripping off a handrail, has recently been used as a model for the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) and very low frequency noise of the low-mass X-ray binary Sco X-1. Here, we show that (1) the DHR is a robust QPO generation process in that it leads to QPO production under a wide range of conditions and assumptions; (2) the phenomenology of the DHR is consistent with the observed aperiodic and quasi-periodic varibility of the AM Her QPO source VV Pup over timescales ranging from 16 ms to 20 s; and (3) a single DHR model can produce both broadband QPOs and features with quality Q greater than 20 as observed in several AM Her QPO sources.

    Description: Observations of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 with the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory are presented. A continuum spectrum is observed, which steepens exponentially with an e-folding energy of 39 +/- 2 keV over the 65-300 keV range. Source intensity variability of approximately 25 percent was seen during the observations, and no significant change in the spectral shape was detected. Simple pair models cannot explain the observed spectrum of NGC 4151, and repeated observations are required to determine whether this spectral shape is common or is even the dominant spectral state in this class of active galactic nuclei.
