Notes: Summary Ulna, radius and carpometacarpus of the right wing of a White Stork were recovered from a preboreal site (±7700 b. Chr.) near Bedburg-Königshoven (W-Germany). This is the earliest postglacial record of the White Stork in Europe.

Notes: Abstract The contribution of regional ground water and deep percolation from a furrow irrigated field to total drain flow was estimated using salt load analysis. It was found that 64% of the drain flow comes from regional ground water flow. The electrical conductivity of the drain water was highly correlated with the drain flow rate. From the field water balance with deep percolation as estimated from the salt load analysis, using yield function derived evapotranspiration, and measured changes in root zone water storage, it was shown that 14% of the crop evapotranspiration comes from ground water during the study period.

Notes: Abstract Growth and yield responses of developing almond trees (Prunus amygdalus, Ruby cultivar) to a range of trickle irrigation amounts were determined in 1985 through 1987 (the fifth through seventh year after planting) at the University of California's West Side Field Station in the semi-arid San Joaquin Valley. The treatments consisted of six levels of irrigation, ranging from 50 through 175% of the estimated crop evapotranspiration (ETc), applied to a clean-cultivated orchard using a line source trickle irrigation system with 6 emitters per tree. ETc was estimated as grass reference evapotranspiration (ET0) times a crop coefficient with adjustments based upon shaded area of trees and period during the growing season. Differential irrigation experiments prior to 1984 on the trees used in this study significantly influenced the initial trunk cross-section area and canopy size in the 50% ETc treatment and 125% ETc treatment. In these cases, treatment effects must be identified as relative effects rather than absolute. The soil of the experimental field was a Panoche clay loam (nonacid, thermic, Typic Torriorthents). The mean increase in trunk cross-sectional area for the 3-year period was a positive linear function (r 2 = 0.98) of total amounts of applied water. With increases in water application above the 50% ETc treatment, nut retention with respect to flower and fertile nut counts after flowering, was increased approximately 10%. In 1985 and 1987, the nut meat yields and mean kernel weights increased significantly with increasing water application from 50% to 150% ETc. Particularly in the higher water application treatments, crop consumptive use was difficult to quantify due to uncertainty in estimates of deep percolation and soil water uptake. Maintenance of leaf water potentials higher than −2.3 MPa during early nut development (March through May) and greater than −2.5 MPa the remainder of the irrigation season (through August) were positively correlated with sustained higher vegetative growth rates and higher nut yields.

Notes: Summary The acquisition of potato leafroll virus (PLRV) byMyzus persicae nymphs from the top leaves of potato plants was studied throughout a growing season in relation to the antigen titre in those leaves and the feeding behaviour of the aphid. Secondarily-infected plants of eight potato genotypes with different levels of field resistance served as virus sources. Early in the growing season, plants were efficient sources for virus acquisition. The amount of viral antigen detected inM. persicae nymphs fed on the top leaves was strongly correlated with the titres of viral antigen in these leaves. Virus acquisition from the top leaves of older potato plants was markedly impaired and could not be correlated with their virus titre. With increasing age of the potato plants and the development of virus symptoms, the virus titre in the leaves declined and the initial weak correlation between the virus titre and field resistance ratings disappeared. Thus, screening secondarily-infected potato plants for field resistance to PLRV based on the concentration of viral antigen in leaves or in aphids fed on them should be avoided later in the growing season. The feeding rate ofM. persicae, measured by the number of honeydew droplets excreted, did not account for the reduced uptake of virus from older plants since it was not influenced by the age of the plant. Throughout the growing season, the feeding rate ofM. persicae nymphs on PLRV-infected plants was higher on genotypes with low levels of field resistance to PLRV than on genotypes with high ones.

Notes: Abstract A helicopter is intrinsically interdisciplinary due to the close coupling among aerodynamics, dynamics, and the blade structural details. Therefore a design optimization with proper interactions among appropriate disciplines (such as structure, dynamics, and aerodynamics) can offer significant benefit to improve rotor performance. This paper studies the integration of structure, dynamics, and aerodynamics in design optimization of helicopter rotor blades. The optimization is performed to minimize the rotor power required and to satisfy design requirements from structure (minimum blade weight and safe stress margin and fatigue life) and dynamics (proper placement of blade natural frequencies and free of flutter). An effort is made to formulate an effective strategy for combining these various requirements in the optimization process. The paper also presents a way for an intelligent phasing of this interdisciplinary optimization to overcome the hurdles due to conflicting demands on the design variables which arise from different disciplines.

Notes: Summary An analysis was made of a difference in colour development between saps from healthy and leaf roll virus (PLRV) infected potato plants, manifested in the diphenylamine reaction ofDische. The colour development was found to be caused by sugars. The differences in colour development were due to the sugar concentration which could be different in healthy and diseased leaves, and not to DNA in the latter. We could correlate the increases in sugar concentration with the severity of virus symptoms. The mechanical transmission of the PLRV, as suggested byBrandenburg (1962), could not be confirmed.
