Notes: Summary Recently it has been found that the two monkey species Callithrix jacchus and Saguinus fuscicollis, both belonging to the same New World monkey family Callitrichidae and held in the same colony under identical conditions, had extremely different serum ascorbate levels. To examine the ascorbic acid metabolism the14C-excretion of orally given 1-14C-ascorbic acid was studied under conditions of marginal and abundant vitamin C supply and under intentional stress. There were large differences in the mode of14C excretion between low and high ascorbate supply. The differences were smaller between stress/no stress conditions intraindividually than between the two species, but they were in the same manner. In comparable trials S. fuscicollis reacted such that a higher status of stress can be supposed in this species.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The influence of several factors on breeding success, nesting behaviour, density and selection of nesting sites was investigated on a study plot of 128 km2 in northeastern Bavaria (Bayreuth, Oberfranken). The position to human settlement is the most important factor: Magpies within settlements showed a higher breeding success and density than outside (Tab. 5); the habitat (rural, urban, outskirts) was less important. Potential predators (GoshawkAccipiter gentilis, Carrion CrowCorvus corone corone) had no effect, Probably because of its low densities. The relation to colonies of the Fieldfare (Turdus pilaris) is interpreted as a common use of grassland as feeding site during the breeding season (Tab. 5). Magpies seem to avoid the vicinity of forests (Tab. 4). The altitude had only a slight effect on breeding success and nesting behaviour. Among several factors which refer to the nesting site (tree type, height, exposition, period of leaf break, nest type) only the nest age had a clear (positive) effect on breeding success. Magpies preferred higher trees for nest-building (Tab. 4). The influence of other factors (density of nest sites, hunting, character of trees) and the relation between the different factors are discussed.

Notes: Abstract A latticeL is called congruence normal if it can be generated by doubling of convex sets starting with the one-element lattice. In the special case of intervals, the lattice is called bounded. It has been proven thatL is bounded if and only ifL is congruence normal and semidistributive. In this paper we study the connection between certain classes of convex sets and generalized semidistributive laws. These so-called doubling classes are pseudovarieties which can be described by implications as well as by forbiden substructures. In the end, we examine the structure of the lattice of all doubling classes.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we consider the following reconstruction problem: Given two ordered sets (G, ≤) and (M, ≤) representing join- and meet-irreducible elements, respectively together with three relationsJ, , $${\hbox{\ \hbox{$\mid$}\kern -1em\lower .5em \hbox{$\leftarrow$}}} $$ onG×M modelling comparability (g≤m) and maximal noncomparability with respect tog (g≰m, butg≤m*) and with respect tom (g≰m, butg≤m*). We determine necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a finite latticeL and injections α:G→J(L) and β:M→M(L) such that the given order relations and the abstract relations coincide with the one induced by the latticeL.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Beryllium yields a characteristic bright blue stain with Chrome azurol S on filter paper. The interfering action of other cations can be eliminated by adding oxalate and EDTA. As little as 4.5μg of beryllium in 0.05 ml of test solution can be still detected. The sensitivity of the reaction is lowered by the presence of ten times as much of several cations.

Notes: Abstract We have attempted to elucidate the natural history of pulmonary aspergillus intracavitary colonization (PAIC) based on more than 350 cases of the disease observed in the last 11 years and on data collected from the literature. The data indicate that PAIC is a dynamic process consequent to the continual growth and death of fungal elements and also with their relationships to the anatomic features of the cavity (valvular mechanisms, vascular alteration). The clinical presentations reflect immunological changes in the host. Metabolites produced by the species of Aspergillus involved affect the clinical presentation of the syndrome.

Notes: Abstract The formation of silicon oxide precipitates from Czochralski grown silicon depends on the time and temperature of the heat treatment as well as on the initial content of interstitially dissolved oxygen. Samples containing between 5×1017 Oi/cm3 and 13×1017 Oi/cm3 have been heated at 750° C for 96 h. SiO2 precipitates of various shape and size have been obtained and investigated by means of small angle neutron scattering (SANS) in the Q-range 0.05 Å−1〈Q〈0.2 Å−1. The obtained SANS patterns reveal a typical anisotropy of their intensity distribution, which splits into a central peak at Q〈0.1 Å−1 due to the shape of the individual particles and a number of weak intensities for large Q-values, originating from a correlation between defects, possibly between the precipitates. While these correlation peaks in the SANS patterns are seen best for rather low values of about (5–7)×1017 Oi/cm3 oxygen content, the central peak anisotropy is most pronounced for higher values of ca 10×1017 Oi/cm3. The integrated intensity of the central peak increases with increasing initial oxygen content. For comparison, untreated samples of the same initial oxygen content do not reveal any anisotropic SAN scattering or a broadened central peak beam.

Notes: Abstract Czochralski grown silicon crystals contain interstitially dissolved oxygen which diffuses on heating to form precipitates of silica. We have examined these precipitates by small angle neutron scattering (SANS) in the Q-range 0.05 Å−1〈Q〈0.4 Å−1. The obtained SANS patterns reveal pronounced anisotropic intensity distributions which resemble the symmetry of the host crystal. The SANS spectra show an anisotropic central peak at Q〈0.1 Å−1 due to the single particle shape and a number of weak intensities for larger Q-values. These weak side maxima are considered correlation peaks or quasi-elastic interference peaks. They show, however, an unexpected and distinct temperature dependence: with decreasing temperature below values of 220 K their intensity is lost slowly, but reversibly. At T = 50 K only the central peak from the single-particle scattering remains unchanged. Upon heating, the correlation peaks regain their former value of intensity and Q-position without any evidence of thermal hysteresis.

Notes: Summary The extensive genetical analysis of the T-locus in mice, carried out by Dunn and his co-workers, has revealed that the breeding pattern of t-alleles is very peculiar. The complexity of the T-locus indicates that some structural rearrangements are involved here. The purpose of the present work was to gain some informations on the structure of chromosomes in which t-alleles are present. 2. The course of spermatogenesis in the lines of mice of the following genotypes was investigated: +/+; T/+; T/t n — namely T/t 0, T/t12, T/tw1, T/tw6, T/tw18; tn/tx — namely t 0/t12, t0/tw18, t12/tw18, tw1/t12, tw1/t0, tw1/tw6, tw1/tw18, and in heterozygotes for translocations T138 and T190, both involving the fragment of linkage group IX in which some t-alleles are present and used as markers. 3. The alleles T and t w1 are not connected with structural rearrangements, as far as detectable by the methods used. The alleles t 0, tw6 and t w18 are interstitial deficiencies involving different chromosomal regions. The most complete data were obtained for t 0: in T/t 0 heterozygotes a loop corresponding to a big interstitial deficiency was present, in all t 0/tn compounds the aberrant structure of one of the bivalents indicated that an interstitial deficiency is here involved. By analysis of translocation T190 the deficiency loop is localized in the chromosome representing linkage group IX. The identification of t w6 as a small interstitial deficiency is based on the analysis of T/t w6 heterozygotes and its localization in linkage group IX on the presence of this deficiency in translocation T138. The description of tw18 as a small interstitial deficiency stems from the analysis of T/tw18 and t 0/tw18, the localization in linkage group IX is shown by its presence in t 0/tw18 in the same bivalent as t 0. The evidence obtained for t 12 indicates that it is either a big terminal deficiency or a small interstitial one inducing constant asynapsis in adjacent terminal segments of the bivalent. 4. The reasons why loops encountered in genotypes involving t 0, tw6 and t w18 are considered as deficiencies and not as duplications are based on available embryological and genetical data. The possible connections between the mode of action of the investigated t-alleles as embryonic lethals and the cytological results on their structure and localization are discussed. 5. Most of the lethal t-alleles suppress crossing-over in the region T-tf. Factors reducing the frequency of recombination in other organisms are discussed in comparison. It is concluded that the pattern of aberation in meiotic behavior of the bivalent carrying t-alleles is for almost each of the studied alleles rather specific and does not permit for suggesting any general mechanism which could account for the action of investigated lethal t-alleles as crossing-over suppressors. 6. A diagram of the presumable localisation of genetical factors in linkage group IX is presented. It is concluded that the so-called T-locus occupies the main part of the long arm of the chromosome corresponding to linkage group IX and that the investigated t-alleles are not unilocal neither with the gene T nor each with other, but scattered along the chromosome. 7. The possible modes of the origin of new t-alleles are discussed, and the hypothesis is advanced that this event might be connected with mistakes of replication of the strand on which a new t-allele arises.
