    Notes: A one-dimensional model of countercurrent fixed-bed coal gasification has been developed, and results have been compared to experimental data from commercial-scale gasifiers. The steady-state model considers separate gas and solid temperatures, axially variable solid and gas flow rates, variable bed void fraction, coal drying, devolatilization based on chemical functional group composition, oxidation and gasification of char, and partial equilibrium in the gas phase. Generalized treatment of gas-phase chemistry and accounting for variable bed void fraction were necessary to predict realistic axial temperature and pressure profiles in an atmospheric fixed-bed gasifier. Model evaluation includes sensitivity of axial temperature profiles to model options, model parameters and operational parameters. Model predictions agree reasonably well with experimental temperature and pressure profile data for gasification of eight coal types ranging from lignite to bituminous. The relative importance of char oxidation resistances to bulk film diffusion, ash diffusion, and chemical reaction is identified.

    Notes: The interaction of pirprofen enantiomers with human serum albumin (HSA) was investigated by means of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), circular dichroism (CD), and 1H NMR spectroscopy. HPLC experiments indicated that both pirprofen enantiomers were bound to one class of high-affinity binding sites (n(+) = 1.91 ± 0.13, K(+) = (4.09 ± 0.64) × 105 M-1, n(-) = 2.07 ± 0.13, K(-) = (6.56 ± 1.35) × 105 M-1) together with nonspecific binding (n′K′(+) = (1.51 ± 0.21) × 104 M-1, n′K′(-) = (0.88 ± 0.13) × 104 M-1). Slight stereoselectivity in specific binding was demonstrated by the difference in product n(+)K(+) = (0.77 ± 0.08) × 106 M-1 vs. n(-)K(-) = (1.30 ± 0.21) × 106 M-1, i.e., the ratio n(-)K(-)/n(+)K(+) = 1.7. CD measurements showed changes in the binding sites located on the aromatic amino acid side chains (a small positive band at 315 nm and a pronounced negative extrinsic Cotton effect in the region 250-280 nm). The protein remains, however, in its predominantly alpha-helical conformation. The 1H NMR difference spectra confirmed that both pirprofen enantiomers interacted with HSA specifically, most probably with site II on the albumin molecule.

    Notes: The protein binding of ketoprofen enantiomers was investigated in human plasma at physiological pH and temperature by ultrafiltration. 14C-labelled (RS)-ketoprofen was synthesized and purified by high-performance liquid chromatography and utilized as a means of quantifying the unbound species. In vitro studies were conducted with plasma obtained from six healthy volunteers. The plasma was spiked with (R)-ketoprofen alone, (S)-ketoprofen alone, and (RS)-ketoprofen in the enantiomeric concentration range of 1.0 to 19.0 μg/ml. The plasma protein binding of ketoprofen was nonenantioselective. At a racemic drug concentration of 2.0 μg/ml the mean (± SD) percentage unbound of (R)-ketoprofen was 0.80 (± 0.15)%. The corresponding value for (S)-ketoprofen, 0.78 (± 0.18)%, was not statistically different (P 〉 0.05). At this racemic drug concentration (2.0 μg/ml) the percentage unbound of each enantiomer was unaffected (P 〉 0.05) by the presence of the glucuronoconjugates of ketoprofen (10 μg/ml) in plasma. At clinically relevant concentrations, the plasma binding of ketoprofen did not exhibit enantioselectivity or concentration dependence nor was the binding of either enantiomer influenced by its optical antipode (P 〉 0.05).

    Notes: That phase equilibrium exists at the gas-liquid interface during gas absorption is usually assumed in the analysis and design of absorption equipment, but the validity of this assumption has been in doubt since Higbie's pioneering gas-absorption studies. Accurate measurements are reported herein of the absorption rates at 25°C. of carbon dioxide into short water jets in which the liquid was in laminar flow. The jets issued from circular nozzles of about 1.5-mm. diam., flowed intact downward through an atmosphere of carbon dioxide at average velocities of from 75 to 550 cm./sec. over distances of 1 to 15 cm., and were collected in a receiver slightly larger in diameter than the nozzles. The measured absorption rates are in excellent agreement with predictions based on unsteady state diffusion theory, when one assumes interfacial equilibrium. It is concluded from these results and those of other investigators that equilibrium prevails at a freshly formed, relatively clean, carbon dioxide-water interface and that the same statement probably applies to the absorption of other slightly soluble gases in water.Evidence is discussed which indicates that an accumulation of minute quantitities of surface-active materials may seriously reduce the rate of gas absorption, either by affecting the hydrodynamic characteristics of the system or perhaps by offering resistance to the transfer of solute molecules across the interface.

    Notes: The separation of 4.5 g. of americium from approximately a kilogram of light rare earths (primarily lanthanum) was achieved on a pilot plant scale by chromatographic displacement of the mixture from Dowex-50 resin with 0.1% ammonium citrate at pH 8 into hydrogen-form Dowex-50. The americium collected into a narrow band and was eluted free from lanthanum but contained an equal weight of cerium. A 6- and a 2-in.-diam. column were used in tandem. Use of a final column with a much smaller diameter would have permitted a cleaner separation from cerium, but this was left for a laboratory-scale separation by a different process. Precipitation, which was observed in the columns during the first runs, was later avoided entriely by use of high flow rates both initially and during the transfer between columns. No adverse effects were noted from ∼15 curies of alpha activity.
