    Notes: Acetale und Orthocarbonsäure-trialkylester reagieren mit Diazoessigsäure-äthylester in Gegenwart katalytischer Mengen BF3-Ätherat bei Raumtemperatur gemäß Schema (5). Diese Reaktion ergibt eine experimentell einfache Methode zur Überführung von Acetalen und Orthoestern unter Kettenverlängerung in Carbonsäureester.  -  Offenkettige und cyclische Acetale, die nicht nach (5) umgesetzt werden konnten, sind in den „Sonderbesprechungen“ zusammengefaßt; 1.3-Dioxolan liefert bei der Behandlung mit katalytischen Mengen BF3 und wenig Diazoessigester ein festes, farbloses Polymerisat.

    Notes: Die Einwirkung des Orthoameisensäure-trimethylesters (2) bzw. des Trithioorthoameisensäure-triäthylesters (3) bei Gegenwart katalytischer Mengen Bortrifluorid-ätherat auf o-Methoxy-diazoacetophenon (1) liefert gemäß Schema (2) die Cumaranon-Derivate 6 bzw. 7. 7 geht bei der Pyrolyse in Gegenwart katalytischer Mengen Kaliumhydrogensulfat gemäß Schema (3) in 2-Äthylmercaptomethylen-cumaranon (9) über. Cumaranon (8) ergibt bei der Kondensation sowohl mit Orthoameisensäure-trialkylestern als auch mit 9 die gelbe Verbindung 10 (vgl. Schema 4). Aus 10 entsteht durch alkalische Hydrolyse das rote 12. 12 ist auch aus 6 sowohl durch Pyrolyse bei Gegenwart von Natriumhydrogensulfat als auch durch Einwirkung von Säure erhältlich (vgl. Schema 5).

    Notes: Die Darstellung der beiden möglichen Formen des Tetrabenzo-heptafulvalens [anti (3a) und syn (3b)] wird beschrieben. Die syn-Form wird aus dem Thioketon 4 oder aus dem geminalen Dichlorid 5 durch Kochen mit Kupfer-Pulver in Toluol erhalten. Die höherschmelzende anti-Form entsteht irreversibel thermisch aus der syn-Form.Die UV-Bestrahlung von 3a oder 3b führt zu ein und derselben Käfigverbindung 16, welche beim Erwärmen 3a liefert. Die Überführung von 3a oder 3b in das Tetrahydroprodukt 15 erfolgt durch Hydrierung an Raney-Nickel bzw. mit Wasserstoff/Platindioxid.Die IR-, NMR-, Raman-, UV- und Massenspektren der Verbindungen 3a, 3b und 16 werden diskutiert. Auf das unterschiedliche Verhalten von 3 gegenüber dem formal ähnlichen Bixanthylen (1a) bezüglich Einwirkung von Thionylchlorid, Thermochromie und Photolyse wird hingewiesen.

Die nach Schema (1) erhaltenen monoacetalisierten bzw. monomercaptalisierten β-Dicarbonylverbindungen 10, 12, 14 und 15 werden gemäß Schema (2) mit KHSO4 in Vinyl-aryl-ketone übergeführt, die NMR-spektroskopisch untersucht werden.

    Notes: Synthesis and Liquid-Crystalline Properties of myo- and scyllo-Inositol Multi EthersSelectively alkylated myo- and scyllo-inositol ethers were obtained by multi-step syntheses starting from commercially available myo-inositol. Necessary conversions of axial hydroxy groups into equatorial ones were achieved using either potassium superoxide (KO2) or potassium nitrite (KNO2) as oxygen nucleophiles for the transformation of myo- into scyllo- inositol derivatives. Polarizing microscopic and thermoanalytical studies of numerous members of three families (6, 13, and 20) of inositol ethers reveal for most of them thermotropic liquid-crystalline behavior. Furthermore, in case of the two long-chain scyllitol tetraethers 13d and e an unusual thermopolymorphism has been found. The number, position, and stereochemical arrangement of alkyl chains attached to the inositol cores strongly influence the mesogenic properties of these biomolecule derivatives, chemically vicinal diols and tetrols. The self-assembly of the studied inositol multi ethers to columnar mesophases of “supramolecular structures” is discussed considering geometrical features of these molecules and their capabilities to aggregate by hydrogen bonding.

    Notes: 1,2,3,4,5,6-Hexa(eq)alkylcyclohexane Model Compounds for Structure-Property Comparisons of Saturated Discotic Liquid CrystalsThe new hydrocarbon (1α, 2β, 3α, 4β, 5α, 6β)-hexahexylcyclohexane (19) and a number of new and differently functionalized scyllo-hexaalkylcyclohexane derivatives (16a, b, 18a - c) with identical stereochemistry were synthesized stereospecifically starting from simple chemical materials. In comparison to the known scyllitol hexaester 1 and the hexaether 2 none of the novel compounds 16, 18, and 19 were thermomesomorphic. This extreme difference in the thermotropic liquid-crystalline behaviour of the hexa(eq)hydroxycyclohexane (scyllitol) derivatives 1 and 2 on the one hand and of our varied hexa(eq)alkylcyclohexans 16, 18, and 19 on the other obviously is a function of the presence and the position of the element oxygen within the side chains of these symmetric star-/disc-shaped compounds. Details concerning this oxygen effect are discussed briefly.

    Notes: Liquid Crystalline Compounds, 79[1a].-Amphiphilic and Mesogenic Carbohydrates, V[1b].-Amphiphilic Fluoroglucose and Fluoroscyllitol DerivativesIn order to look at the influence of the OH-F substitution in the cyclic, hydrophilic section (head group) of amphiphilic sugars and of scyllitol derivatives on their liquid crystalline properties for the first time, we synthesized various differently structured fluoro-D-glucose derivatives [2-O-decyl-α-D-glucopyranosyl fluoride (4), 4-O-tetradecyl-α-D-glucopyranosyl fluoride (5), 6-O-hexadecyl-α-D-glucopyranosyl fluoride (6), 6-deoxy-6-fluoro-2,3-di-O-hexadecyl-D-glucopyranose (9), 2-deoxy-2-fluoro-4,6-O-alkyliden-D-glucopyranosen (11a-d), 3-deoxy-3-fluoro-5,6-di-O-tetradecyl-D-glucofuranose (15)] as well as the 2-deoxy-2-fluoro-2,3,4,5,6-tetra-O-hexyl-scyllo-in-osit (19). Substitution of an OH group for a fluorine atom in amphiphilic derivatives destabilizes the thermotropic mesophase as it was to be expected so that either no or only narrowrange mesophases result. Both thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystal phases occur in the series of 2-deoxy-2-fluoro-D-glucopyranose acetals 11 which are discussed in detail and which are compared with the analogous 2-hydroxy derivatives 12. Only 11c-d are thermotropic fluoro mesogens.
