Notizen: Several new gerade Rydberg states of the I2–Ar van der Waals complex are reported in the region 53 000–69 000 cm−1 above the electronic ground state, using mass resolved (2+1) resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectroscopy. The spectra all exhibit anharmonic vibrational progressions in the I2...Ar van der Waals stretching mode, ν3, having typical ωe values in the range 49–62 cm−1, depending upon the principal quantum number of the Rydberg state involved. The observed increase in ωe and spectral red shift which accompanies the increase in principal quantum number is consistent with a progressive strengthening of the van der Waals bond, resulting from less effective shielding of the ion core by the Rydberg electron. The apparent good Franck–Condon overlap in the ν3 mode between the ground state and the Rydberg states together with the absence of any clear evidence of bending mode progressions in the spectra, indicates that the I2–Ar complex retains a T-shaped geometry in all the Rydberg excited states observed.

Notizen: Abstract. During unsteady or transient ground-water flow, the fluid mass per unit volume of aquifer changes as the potentiometric head changes, and solute transport is affected by this change in fluid storage. Three widely applied numerical models of two-dimensional transport partially account for the effects of transient flow by removing terms corresponding to the fluid continuity equation from the transport equation, resulting in a simpler governing equation. However, fluid-storage terms remaining in the transport equation that change during transient flow are, in certain cases, held constant in time in these models. For the case of increasing heads, this approximation, which is unacknowledged in these models’documentation, leads to transport velocities that are too high, and increased concentration at fluid and solute sources. If heads are dropping in time, computed transport velocities are too low. Using parameters that somewhat exaggerate the effects of this approximation, an example numerical simulation indicates solute travel time error of about 14 percent but only minor errors due to incorrect dilution volume. For horizontal flow and transport models that assume fluid density is constant, the product of porosity and aquifer thickness changes in time: initial porosity times initial thickness plus the change in head times the storage coefficient. This formula reduces to the saturated thickness in unconfined aquifers if porosity is assumed to be constant and equal to specific yield. The computational cost of this more accurate representation is insignificant and is easily incorporated in numerical models of solute transport.

Notizen: Following the first-principle procedure outlined by Buchen (1971a) and Borcherdt (1973), we describe the derivation of SH-wave propagation in a homogeneous transversely isotropic linear viscoelastic (HTILV) solid. A plane SH wave propagates with the frequency-dependent complex phase velocity:β2(ω) =β2h(ω) sin2b+β2v(ω) cos2bwhere βh and βv are complex shear-wave velocities perpendicular and parallel to the axis of symmetry of the medium and b is a complex angle that the complex wave vector makes with the axis. The energy flows in a direction governed by the propagation vector, attenuation vector and the rigidities. The attenuation angle between the propagation vector and the attenuation vector can be uniquely determined by the complex ray parameter at the saddle point of the complex traveltime function. Complex rays can be traced between source and receiver locations with intermediate coordinates being complex. By means of the method of steepest descent, the wavenumber integral representing the exact SH-wave field generated by a line source for the layered-medium problem can be approximated to give complex ray amplitudes for reflected and transmitted body waves. The factor accounting for cylindrical divergence is similar in form to that of the isotropic case. For a simple two half-spaces model, the complex ray result agrees well with the ω-k solution in regions away from the critical area. For pure SH-mode propagation through a planar HTILV multi-layered structure with 20 per cent velocity anisotropy in each layer (Qv= Qh), the reflected amplitudes in the two cases (transversely isotropic and isotropic) generally do not differ much, but traveltimes differ significantly. This suggests that one can, in the case we considered, neglect the effect of weak anisotropy on amplitudes, but not on propagation phase.

Notizen: Abstract A fluorescent method has been developed for determination of ascorbic acid concentrations. The method involves treatment of the ascorbic acid with Cu(II) and treating the hydrogen peroxide formed with horseradish peroxidase in the presence ofp-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, to form a fluorescentp-hydroxyphenylacetic acid dimer. The reaction is suitable for analysis of concentrations in the range from 50 μM to 4 mM ascorbic acid solutions and can be used for analysis of pharmaceutical preparations but is unsuitable for analysis of ascorbate in preparations derived from natural sources. By using a slight modification of the analytical technique it is possible to measure the amount of hydrogen peroxide formed and the residual concentrations of ascorbic acid in solutions treated with varying amounts of copper ion.
