    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Verdazyls react with FeCl3 and other metal halides in formic acid to give double-salts. Verdazylium⊕;·C(NO2)3 ⊖; and Verdazylium⊕;NO3 ⊖; were obtained with tetranitromethane. Verdazyliumsalts and tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine yield, in an electron transfer reaction, the corresponding verdazyls andWurster's-blue; i. e. two diamagnetic compounds react to give two stable paramagnetic species. The absorption spectra of different substituted verdazylium salts are discussed in relation to the spectra of the corresponding verdazyls.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Verdazyle reagieren mit FeCl3 und anderen Metallhalogeniden in HCOOH unter Bildung von Doppelsalzen. Mit Tetranitromethan erhält man Verdazylium⊕; C(NO2)3 ⊖; und Verdazylium⊕;NO3 ⊖;. Verdazyliumsalze und Tetramethyl-p-phenylendiamin ergeben unter Elektronenübergang Verdazyle undWursters Blau. Dabei werden aus 2 diamagnetischen Verbindungen 2 paramagnetische Radikale gebildet. Die Absorptionsspektren verschiedenartig substituierter Verdazyliumsalze werden im Zusammenhang mit den Spektren der entsprechenden Verdazyle diskutiert.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary The inheritance of resistance toGlobodera rostochiensis pathotype Ro1 was studied in progenies of 10 selected cultivars which had resistance to different pathotypes, stemming from several wild species. Progenies of all the cultivars were produced by crossing with a susceptible cultivar, and several random samples from each combination, usually progeny from a single berry, were tested for their resistance to pathotype Ro1. The cultivars could be separated into genotypic groups, according to the proportion of resistant progeny in each combination. Cultivars which did not differ significantly in the split of resistant and susceptible progenies, but were clearly different from other groups, were put in the same group. The number of groups which could be differentiated was not consistent with the theoretically possible genotype, simplex ... quadruplex, arising from the inheritance of the gene H1. Greater genetic variation could be detected involving more than 4 genotypic groups. The results suggest the existence of another genetical mechanism. The number of groups and their reproducibility requires further investigation. It will therefore be necessary to test several different random samples to characterise a single combination.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung 10 nematodenresistente Sorten wurden mit einem anfälligen Elter gekreuzt und die daraus erzeugten Nachkommenschaften auf Resistenz gegen Pathotyp Ro 1 des Kartoffelnematoden geprüft. Die Prüfung erfolgte an Sämlingen und Klonen, die sich aus mehreren Stichproben einer Kombination, einschliesslich der Prüfung von Nachkommen aus Einzelbeeren, zusammensetzten. Entsprechend dem Anteil resistenter Nachkommen in den einzelnen Kombinationen können die Sorten in genotypische Gruppen eingeteilt werden. Im Gegensatz zu den simplex ... quadruplex Genotypen der Gen H1-Vererbung konnte eine höhere genetische Variabilität nachgewiesen werden. Eine Beurteilung der Anzahl der genetischen Faktoren, die die Vererbung der Resistenz gegen Pathotyp Ro 1 beeinflussen, kann erst nach Prüfung weiterer Kreuzungsnachkommenschaften erfolgen.

    Notes: Summary Capillary zone electrophoresis using cyclodextrins and a chiral crown ether as buffer constituents was studied for the enantiomeric separation of drugs and amino acids. Based on results obtained from separation of racemic α-amino acids both chiral selectors are compared with respect to resolution, efficiency and retention time. For (±)-Quinagolide effects of buffer composition and temperature are examined using β-cyclodextrin as chiral agent. Optimum conditions were pH 2.5 at 30 mmol L−1 β-cyclodextrin. A linear dependence of retention on β-cyclodextrin concentration allowed calculation of formation constants of the host-guest complexes. Buffer concentration and temperature also influence resolution. The application of a chiral crown ether to the separation of optical isomers in capillary zone electrophoresis is described for the first time. Chiral recognition of solutes depends on the formation of protonated alkyl amines and separation is attributed to the formation of diastereomeric host-guest complexes with different interactions for each enantiomer. The effects of crown ether concentration on resolution are presented.

    Notes: Summary This paper reviews chiral separations by capillary zone electrophoresis and micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography. The principles of host-guest complexation, ligand exchange and solubilization by optically active micelles are discussed in detail. An overview of practical examples taken from literature is presented. Results from our laboratory are shown to illustrate the potential of these methods. The review concludes by discussing strong and weak points of the techniques together with possible future developments.

    Notes: Abstract In the final product of a bimodal bigraft ABS, consisting of crosslinked polybutadiene particles (diameter 100 nm) with grafted and ungrafted poly (styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (=SAN) with an acrylonitrile (=AN) content of 28 weight %, crosslinked polybutadiene particles (diameter 300 nm) with grafted and ungrafted SAN with an AN content of 12 weight % and an added SAN with an AN content of 28 weight % the following parameters can be determined: degree of grafting of the small polybutadiene particles, degree of grafting of the large polybutadiene particles, acrylonitrile content of the grafted chains of the small polybutadiene particles, acrylonitrile content of the grafted chains of the large polybutadiene particles, grafting efficiency of the large particles, average particle diameter and particle diameter distribution of the small particles, average particle diameter and particle diameter distribution of the big particles, molar mass distribution of the ungrafted chains of the large particles, chemical distribution of the ungraftd chains of the large particles, molar mass distribution of the SAN resin added, chemical distribution of the SAN resin added. Preparative differential ultracentrifugation in acetone/γ-butyrolacrone (volume ratio 0.55∶0.45), FTIR spectrometry and electron microscopy of the floating and sedimentating fraction yield the degree of grafting and AN content of the graft chains of the large particles and the degree of grafting and AN content of the graft chains of the small particles. Preparative differential centrifugation, FTIR spectrometry and electron microscopy of the fractions give nearly equivalent results. Fractional demixing with the demixing solvents ethylene carbonate/tetraline of the acetone-soluble part yields the SAN with 12 weight % AN in the upper-phase and the SAN with 28 weight % AN in the lower phase. Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and high-performance precipitation liquid chromatography (HPPLC) of the fractions yield the molecular distribution and chemical distribution of the different SAN resins. SEC, coupled with turbidimetric titration of the acetone-soluble fractions withn-hexane as precipirant, indicates SAN resin with lower AN content in addition to the SAN resin with 28 weight % AN.

    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The preparation and properties of crystalline free radicals containing two or three “verdazyl”-groups per molecule are described. Through the paramagnetism of the three triradicals, corresponding to three unpaired electrons, remained unchanged when cooled to a temperature of 77° K, one of the nine biradicals showed a reversible change to diamagnetic form under these conditions. The absorption and ESR spectra are related to the structures of the radical species.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Darstellung und Eigenschaften von kristallisierten freien Radikalen, die zwei und drei Verdazyl-Ringsysteme pro Molekül enthalten, werden beschrieben. Während der Paramagnetismus der drei dargestellten Triradikale 3 ungepaarten Elektronen entsprach und bis 77° K unverändert blieb, fand sich unter den neun dargestellten Biradikalen eines, das beim Abkühlen reversible diamagnetisch wurde. Die Absorptionsspektren und ESR-Spektren werden im Zusammenhang mit Strukturfragen diskutiert.
