    Notes: Summary Single seed descent is an easy inbreeding strategy aimed at deferring selection in successive generations of a cross between two homozygous lines to that generation for which selection looks most successful. Different selection aims are discussed. For characters that are determined by a small number of (major) genes, numbers of plants and generations are tabulated that guarantee the breeder to achieve his aim with a given level of heterozygosity and a given probability.

    Notes: Summary Growth analyses were carried out on 88 accessions of five Lycopersicon species. Experiments were conducted in a climate room at 19/14° C day/night temperature which was irradiated at 20 W/m2 for eight hours per day. Large differences in plant weights between wild species and the cultivated tomato were observed from 44 to 84 days after sowing. The increase in plant dry weight could be described by a second order polynomial function. When compared at a standardized plant weight of one gram, the relative growth rates (RGR) of the wild and cultivated accessions ranged from 5.3 to 11.8% and 8.5 to 12.2% per day respectively, limiting the use of wild species as sources for strong growth. When expressed at plant weights of one and three g large differences in decrease of the RGR were observed within L. esculentum. The modern hybrid tomato cultivars were among the fastest growing genotypes, with a relatively slow decrease in RGR.

    Notes: Abstract An upward shift in the concentration of calcium present in the medium during somatic embryogenesis increased the number of embryos produced approximately two-fold. This was observed when embryogenic suspension cells grown in 2,4-D medium with the normal calcium concentration of 10−3 M were transferred to hormone-free medium containing 10−2 M calcium and when embryogenic suspension cells grown in 2,4-D medium containing 10−4 M calcium were transferred to hormone-free medium with 10−3 M calcium. At calcium concentrations between 6·10−3 and 10−2 M globular stage somatic embryos were found in cultures supplemented with 2·10−6 M of 2,4-D indicating that elevated calcium counteracts the inhibitory effect of 2,4-D on somatic embryogenesis. No qualitative changes were found in the pattern of extracellular polypeptides as a result of growth and embryogenesis in media with different calcium concentrations.

The increase in the plasticity of Avena coleoptile sections by auxin which has been found in external solutions with an osmotic value, lower than a critical value (Cleland, 1959) is observed only in sections from red-irradiated coleoptiles. Irradiation with red light of sections, taken from dark-grown seedlings and cut in dim green light, has no effect on the plasticity of the sections. 2. Different zones of the coleoptile show different responses to small and large doses of red light. 3. Exposure of the coleoptiles to red light during two minutes (Intensity 40 μW.cm-2) induces a short-term increase of plasticity of the sections (90 minutes after irradiation) in solutions of low osmotic value. This short-term effect of red light interferes with a long-term (16 hours after irradiation) decrease of the suction force of the sections and a decrease of plasticity over the whole range of osmotic values, between pure buffer and the value causing incipient plasmolysis. 4. Only the long-term reduction of plasticity is reversed by far-red irradiation applied after the red irradiation. 5. In most cases, the elastic stretching was not influenced by red light when applied 90 minutes before sectioning, but in some experiments it was increased.

    Notes: Summary The inhibition of the growth rate of the first internode of Avena by red light occurs in three steps. The first step reduces elongation by ca. 15%. It is produced and saturated by 10-3 to 10-1 μW sec cm-2 at λ=660 nm and is irreversible by far-red irradiation. All wavelengths between 400 and 800 nm produce and saturate this step. The second step, produced by red light quantities between ca. 10 and 104 μW sec cm-2 reduces elongation to ca. 50% of the maximal; it is not produced by far-red light but far-red reverses completely this component of the effect of red light. The third step inhibits mesocotyl elongation to ca. 95% of the maximal. The effect of red light in this step depends on the duration of irradiation rather than on the total quantity of energy, and is not reversed by far-red irradiation. The three inhibition steps in the elongation of the mesocotyl are matched by three growth-promotion steps in the growth of the coleoptile, but the extent of the far-red-irreversible first step outweighs in this case by far the extent of the far-red-reversible second step.

    Notes: Abstract Most two-pass rendering methods calculate a radiosity shading for each patch or element in a scene in the first pass. This shading contains two components: one for the light received directly from the main light sources and one representing the intensity of the light received indirectly by means of diffuse and specular interreflection between patches. However, it is very difficult to achieve accurate representation of the distribution of this radiosity shading over the patch, particularly where clearly visible shadow boundaries exist. A better approach is to store only the indirect reflection component in the form of radiosity shading, and to calculate the direct reflection component during the second pass by casting shadow rays. This approach normally requires that many shadow rays must be cast. However, the number of rays for shadow testing can be kept low by selecting only those light sources that substantially contribute to the shading of a patch and applying an adaptive image refinement technique in combination with a shadow coherence method.

    Notes: Summary In a segregating population a quantitative trait may be considered to follow a mixture of (normal) distributions, the mixing proportions being based on Mendelian segregation rules. A general and flexible mixture model is proposed for mapping quantitative trait loci (QTLs) by using molecular markers. A method is discribed to fit the model to data. The model makes it possible to (1) analyse non-normally distributed traits such as lifetimes, counts or percentages in addition to normally distributed traits, (2) reduce environmental variation by taking into account the effects of experimental design factors and interaction between genotype and environment, (3) reduce genotypic variation by taking into account the effects of two or more QTLs simultaneously, (4) carry out a (combined) analysis of different population types, (5) estimate recombination frequencies between markers or use known marker distances, (6) cope with missing marker observations, (7) use markers as covariables in detection and mapping of QTLs, and finally to (8) implement the mapping in standard statistical packages.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper it is proved that the set of proper equilibria of a bimatrix game is the finite union of polytopes. To that purpose we split up the strategy space of each player into a finite number of equivalence classes and consider for a given ɛ 〉0 the set of all ɛ-proper pairs within the cartesian product of two equivalence classes. If this set is non-empty, its closure is a polytope. By considering this polytope as ɛ goes to zero, we obtain a (Myerson) set of proper equilibria. A Myerson set appears to be a polytope.

    Notes: Abstract Evidence is presented that a neurophysiologically-inspired mathematical model, originally developed for the generation of spontaneous EEG (electroencephalogram) activity, can produce VEP (visual evoked potential)-like waveforms when pulse-like signals serve as input. It was found that the simulated VEP activity was mainly due to intracortical excitatory connections rather than direct thalamic input. Also, the model-generated VEPs exhibited similar relationships between prestimulus EEG characteristics and subsequent VEP morphology, as seen in human data. Specifically, the large correlation between the N1 amplitude and the prestimulus alpha phase angle, and the insensitivity of P2 to the latter feature, as observed in actual VEPs to low intensity flashes, was also found in the model-generated data. These findings provide support for the hypothesis that the spontaneous EEG and the VEP are generated by some of the same neural structures and that the VEP is due to distributed activity, rather than dipolar sources.
