    Notes: The radiation resistance of a series of aromatic polysulfones comprising alternating units of diphenyl sulfone and various aromatic diols has been investigated by measuring volatile products, soluble fractions and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra. The yields of radicals at 77 K observed by ESR and of SO2 at 423 K have indicated that biphenol gives enhanced resistance to Y radiation, and tetramethyl bisphenol-A decreased resistance, relative to bisphenol-A, bisphenol-S and hydroquinone. The protective effect of bisphenol was confirmed by lower scission and crosslinking yields determined from the soluble fractions after high doses.

    Notes: Magic-angle spinning cross polarization solid state NMR spectra and relaxation data have been obtained for the MgCl2/ethyl benzoate (EB)/p-cresol (PC)/AlEt3 (TEA)/TiCl4 catalyst (CW) system following each stage of preparation. The change of chemical shifts of certain carbons in EB and their extremely short TH1 suggest strong complexation of EB with MgCl2 and that the EB is in a rigid physical state. The broad linewidths indicate dispersity in binding sites giving a range of chemical shifts. PC also forms a rigid complex with MgCl2 and has the effect of rendering the bound EB less rigid. Reaction between PC and TEA produces EtnAl (OC6H4Me)3-n species. The ethyl carbons cannot be observed by cross polarization or by a simple π/2 carbon polarization. Treatment with TiCl4 removes most but not all of the PC moieties by extraction and conversion of the aluminum compounds to AlCl3. The 13C-NMR of EB in the catalyst have chemical shifts like in MgCl2/EB.

    Notes: Propylene was polymerized with rac-ethylene-bis (1-η5-indenyl)dichlorozirconium/methylaluminoxane in solvents of different polarity. The poly (propylene) formed was separated by solvent extraction; 13C-NMR and DSC measurements were made on the polymer fractions. The poly(propylene) in each solvent fraction has its characteristic molecular weight steric pentad distributions, melting transition temperature, and enthalpy for fusion irrespective of the polymerization medium. The results suggest that the medium dielectric constant does not affect the polymerization rate or the intrinsic stereoselectivity, propagation and chain transfer rates a given catalytic species but can alter the occurrence of steric insertion errors through shifting of distributions of the propagating species producing poly(propylenes) of different stereoregularities. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: CH-type catalysts were prepared by reacting MgCl2 · ROH, where ROH is 2-ethyl hexanol (EH), (R)-2-octanol (R-20), and (S)-2-octanol (S-20), with TiCl4 in the presence of di-i-butyl phthalate (BP), di-i-butyl terephthalate (BT), (-)-dimenthyl phthalate (MP), or (-)-dimenthyl terephthalate (MT). The MT catalysts were found to incorporate 8.9 to 13% Ti whereas the BP catalysts contain only 1.9 to 2.6% Ti. Comparison of the CH(EH, BP) and CH(EH, MT) catalysts showed that they have about equal number of isospecific active sites per gram of catalyst and the same rate constants of propagation for their nonspecific sites, however, the isospecific sites in the latter are less active by comparison. Consequently, the CH(EH, BP) catalysts is five times more active than the CH(EH, MT) catalysts and produces polypropylene which is 97% isotactic (reflux n-heptane insoluble) as compared to 84.7% for the latter. The catalysts derived from 2-octanols are much less active than the corresponding catalysts prepared with 2-ethyl hexanol due to lack of reactivity with phthalic anhydride which permits excessive incorporation of TiCl4 to form nonstereospecific catalytic sites as well as inactive Ti species.

    Notes: Chicken adult muscle and liver cDNA libraries were screened with a cDNA, α1, previously isolated from a chicken embryo library by screening with antibodies against the α subunit of chicken CapZ. cDNAs with a new coding region, called α2, were found in addition to ones with the α1 coding region. α2 predicts a protein sequence that matches exactly the N-terminal sequence of 5 peptides prepared from CapZ α purified from chicken muscle, while the protein sequence predicted by α1 matches the peptides well, but not exactly. The predicted protein sequences of α1 and α2 are very similar to each other, and they are similar to those of the α subunit of capping protein from Dictyostelium [Hartmann et al., J. Biol. Chem. 163:5254-5254, 1989] and an actin-binding protein from Xenopus [Ankenbauer et al., Nature 342:822-824, 1989]. Other conserved features of the predicted primary and secondary structures are noted. Chicken α1 and α2 are transcribed in all of 7 adult chicken muscle and non-muscle tissues in comparable amounts by Northern analysis. α2 has four poly(A)+ RNA transcripts, one of which is rare in liver. α1 has two transcripts. α1 and α2 are encoded by different single-copy genes by Southern analysis of chicken genomic DNA.

    Notes: The epididymal tubule is a dynamic structure, in which spermatozoa undergo distinct physiological and morphological changes. The epithelial cells lining the ductuli vary dramatically in their histochemical and cytological properties according to the region of the tubule in which they are located. Additionally, regional variation is observed regarding the biosynthetic, secretory, and absorptive properties of the epithelial cells. Using in situ histochemical analysis, we document here the region-specific expression of a variety of genes that are transcriptionally active in the adult rat epididymis. Radiolabeled antisense riboprobes were used to localize, within the efferent duct/caput epididymis, transcripts encoding protein B/C, protein D/E (acidic epididymal glycoprotein), sulphated glycoprotein 1, sulphated glycoprotein 2, cellular retinol-binding protein, and the neuroendocrine peptide precursor proenkephalin. Each species of mRNA exhibits a unique pattern of hybridization, revealing that gene transcription within the efferent duct/caput epididymis is also highly region specific. This observation may partially elucidate the molecular basis underlying the phenomenon of regional alternations in the composition of protein factors within the tubule lumen.

    Notes: Chromatin and microtubule configurations during the first cell cycle of bovine zygotes were analyzed by DNA staining and microtubule immunolocalization using an IVM/IVF system and oocytes matured and fertilized in vivo, in order to investigate the origin of the active centrosome and to characterize the nuclear and the cytoplasmic changes following bovine fertilization. Our results suggest that the paternal centrosome is active during early zygotic development, forming a conspicuous sperm aster soon after fertilization. We also report that polyspermy in bovine eggs, leads to the formation of numerous sperm asters with different degrees of association with the chromatin. The maternal structures in both monospermic and polyspermic zygotes can be lost or degenerate. Consequently, these cells may resume the first cell cycle as androgenotes, very often with several types of mitotic activity taking place in different regions of the cell cytoplasm at the same time. As indicated by a comparison of monospermic and polyspermic fertilization rates to rates of development, it is possible that some androgenetic embryos cleave and develop to the blastocyst stage. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: The formation of CH-type catalysts has been investigated by high-resolution and solid-state NMR. These catalysts are prepared from a soluble MgCl2 and 2-ethyl-1-hexanol adduct (MgCl2·3EH) by reaction with phthalic anhydride (PA) to form dioctylphthalate (DOP) and then with TiCl4 in the presence of di-i-butylphthalate (BP). In the model systems MgCl2·3EH/PA, MgCl2/BP, and MgCl2/TiCl4/BP, the ester is complexed with MgCl2 and /or TiCl4 in two or more states. Only single-ester C=O and OCH2 resonances are seen in TiCl4/BP, probably due to exchange of ester coordinations. CH-catalysts prepared by three different procedures exhibit a single mode of bonding for the ester. The chemical shift values are consistent for ester complexed with MgCl2. The most active and stereoselective catalyst has the most shielded chemical shift values for the C=O and  - OCH2 -  carbons, shortest TH1 and TH1p, and longest TCH relaxation times. These parameters change monotonically with the decrease of activity and stereoselectivity of the catalyst preparation. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
