Description / Table of Contents: Stereochemistry and Reactivity of Tetrahalogenated 2,3-Diazabicyclo[3.2.0]hept-2-enes and Bicyclo [2.1.0] pentanesThe addition of diazoalkanes to tetrahalogenated cyclobutenes 1-3 leads to 6,6,7,7-tetrahalo-2,3-diazabicyclo[3.2.0]hept-2-enes 4-8, the structure and stereochemistry of which are determined by means of n. m. r. spectroscopy. Thermal decomposition of 4, 5, and 8 in boiling toluene affords the tetrahalobicyclo[2.1.0]pentanes 9, 10, and 12 in good yields. Under the same conditions 7 decomposes in a stereospecific manner to form 11 and small amounts of 13. Sodium methoxide converts 9-11 into the cyclobutenes 14 and 15. Under the influence of sulfuric acid 10 forms the cyclobutenedione 16 or a mixture of cyclopentenones 18, 19 depending on the reaction conditions.

Description / Table of Contents: Reactions with Cyclobutenediones, XXXII. Identification of 3,4-Dioxo-2-phenyl-1-cyclobutene-1-yldiazomethaneThe reaction of 3-bromo-4-phenyl-3-cyclobutene-1,2-dione (1) with excess of diazomethane produces the tetrahydrocyclopentapyrazoles 2 and 3, assuming 6 as an intermediate. Reaction of 1 with diazomethane in the presence of triethylamine affords 9 and suggests 7 as intermediate. The use of pyridine, surprisingly, leads to the dihydropyridylcyclobutenedione 11 which is also obtained from the pyridinium bromide 10 with diazomethane.

Notes: From a strain of Aspergillus nidulans var. echinulatus, A 32204, echinocandin, a novel polypeptide antibiotic complex with high and specific anti-yeast activity was isolated. The main component, echinocandin B, was separated by counter-current distribution. A tentative molecular formula C52H81N7O18 is discussed. The antibiotic is characterized by its IR. and NMR. spectra and by its characteristic hydrolytic degradation products: linoilic acid, L-4-hydroxyproline, L-4-oxoproline, (2S, 3S, 4S)-4-methyl-3-hydroxy-proline, L-threonine (2 mols), and 1-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-3-amino-propan-2-one.

Description: The interaction of the thermosphere and ionosphere is largely governed by collisions between ions and neutral particles. On Venus and the Earth, O(+) is a dominant ion, and atomic O dominates throughout much of the thermosphere; therefore an accurate O(+)-O cross section is an important prerequisite for understanding the dynamics of planetary upper atmospheres. The cross section and momentum transfer collision frequency are calculated with a quantum mechanical code which includes resonance charge exchange, polarization, and charge-quadrupole effects. Our results agree well with earlier calculations of Stubbe (1968) and Stallcop et al. (1991).

Description: For a fixed heat flow, the surface flow velocity of a convecting layer is not strongly sensitive to the variation of viscosity as a function of depth. Thus, the inferred absence of a low viscosity asthenosphere on Venus can not account for the limited surface motions there. The surface velocity is dependent on the convective geometry. Cartesian geometry convection can produce large surface velocities if the high viscosity surface layer is broken in places by weak zones. On the other hand, a high viscosity surface layer may inhibit the development of large surface velocities in axisymmetric convection.

Description: Maps are presented that describe the compressional tectonic structures found at the base of the Central Costa Rica volcanic range (CCRVR), which comprise thrust faults and related fault propagation folds, only partly covered by syntectonic and posttectonic volcanoclastic deposits. Evidence is presented that these structures formed by gravitational failure and lumping of the flanks of the volcanic range. It is suggested that similar structures may be found at the toe of the southern flank of Kilauea volcano, Hawaii, and along the perimeter scarp of the Olympus Mons volcano on Mars.

Description: The Cassini Mission to Saturn and Titan represents an important step into the exploration of the outerplanets. It will expand on the flyby encounters of Pioneer and Voyager and parallel the detailed exploration of the Jupiter system to be accomplished by the Galileo Mission. By continuing the study of the two giant planets and enabling detailed comparisons of their structure and behavior, Cassini will provide a tremendous insight into the formation and evolution of the solar system. In addition, by virtue of its focus on the Saturnian satellite Titan, Cassini will return detailed data on an environment whose atmospheric chemistry may resemble that of the primitive Earth. The scientific objectives can be divided into five categories: Titan, Saturn, rings, icy satellites, and magnetospheres. The key area of interest to exobiologists is Titan; the other four scientific categories will be discussed briefly to provide a comprehensive overview of the Cassini Mission.

Description: The Equatorial Highlands of Venus consist of a series of quasicircular regions of high topography, rising up to about 5 km above the mean planetary radius. These highlands are strongly correlated with positive geoid anomalies, with a peak amplitude of 120 m at Atla Regio. Shield volcanism is observed at Beta, Eistla, Bell, and Atla Regiones and in the Hathor Mons-Innini Mons-Ushas Mons region of the southern hemisphere. Volcanos have also been mapped in Phoebe Regio and flood volcanism is observed in Ovda and Thetis Regiones. Extensional tectonism is also observed in Ovda and Thetis Regiones. Extensional tectonism is also observed in many of these regions. It is now widely accepted that at least Beta, Atla, Eistla, and Bell Regiones are the surface expressions of hot, rising mantel plumes. Upwelling plumes are consistent with both the volcanism and the extensional tectonism observed in these regions. The geoid anomalies and topography of these four regions show considerable variation. Peak geoid anomalies exceed 90 m at Beta and Atla, but are only 40 m at Eistla and 24 m at Bell. Similarly, the peak topography is greater at Beta and Atla than at Eistla and Bell. Such a range of values is not surprising because terrestrial hotspot swells also have a side range of geoid anomalies and topographic uplifts. Kiefer and Hager used cylindrical axisymmetric, steady-state convection calculations to show that mantle plumes can quantitatively account for both the amplitude and the shape of the long-wavelength geoid and topography at Beta and Atla. In these models, most of the topography of these highlands is due to uplift by the vertical normal stress associated with the rising plume. Additional topography may also be present due to crustal thickening by volcanism and crustal thinning by rifting. Smrekar and Phillips have also considered the geoid and topography of plumes on Venus, but they restricted themselves to considering only the geoid-topography ratio and did not examine either the geoid and topography amplitudes separately or the shapes of anomalies.
