Notes: Polycrystalline TlHSO4 was investigated by calorimetry (253-423 K) and by infrared (10-300 K) and Raman (10-420 K) spectroscopy. Two phase transitions are detected at 320 and 388 K. A complete assignment of the spectra of the room-temperature phase (III) is given and the spectroscopic results are consistent with infinite chains of hydrogen bonds. This structure appears disordered above 320 K (phase II). The high-temperature phase (I) presents the characteristic features of a plastic phase according to the spectroscopic manifestations of an increasing orientational disorder of sulphate ions. Above 360 K, a metastable phase (I′) showing a complex hydrogen-bonded framework is identified.

Notes: Raman and infrared spectra of the room-temperature ‘paraelectric’ (II) and high-temperature (I) superionic phases of NH4HSeO4 and ND4DSeO4 were investigated at different temperatures in the range 300-450 K. A new intermediate phase I′ is identified on cooling phase I. A complete assignment of the bands of phase II is given and the spectroscopic manifestations of the structural disorder due to both the statistical distribution of OH … O protons and orientational disorder of ammonium ions were studied. In the superionic phase I infinite (HSeO4-)n chains are broken and open dimers appear to be formed. There is increasing orientational disorder of both ammonium and HSeO4- ions resulting in a plastic state. Hydrogen bonding in various phases is discussed.

Notes: An assignment of the Raman active lattice modes in terms of factor group symmetry species and rotational vibrations is given for paradibromobenzene-H4 and -D4, parabromochlorobenzene and parachloroiodobenzene. The analysis of the Raman spectra of mixed crystals of paradibromobenzene and paradichlorobenzene at 90K with 1 cm-1 resolution and the temperature dependence of the linewidths of the three librations are evidence for the static nature of the disorder in the unsymmetrical derivatives.
