Notes: Abstract CALFIRE, the acronym for CALculate Fire In Room and Enclosure, is a knowledge-based mathematical formulation of analytical and numerical procedures to predict the consequences of a fire in a room or enclosure. CALFIRE is a well-knit and integrated computer model that offers menu items such as heat release rate (HRR), flame height, vent size, and room temperatures of closed rooms, and rooms with natural and forced ventilation. Warnings and checks have been provided to prevent the misuse of the model. Care has been taken to require minimal keyboard responses in order to make CALFIRE a truly user-friendly, interactive fire model.

Notes: Abstract The thermophilic fungus Malbranchea sulfurea produces extracellular α-amylase whereas α-glucosidase is mainly cell bound. Extraction of the cell bound enzyme was maximum with one molar NaCl, followed by Triton ×100 and Urea-Na2SO3 extractants. Supplementation of Triton ×100 in growth medium significantly affected the presence of enzymes at various locations. A role for cell bound α-amylase and α-glucosidase has been suggested in rapid starch utilization by the fungus during early growth phase.

Notes: Abstract The paper presents an exact analysis of the dispersion of a passive contaminant in a viscous fluid flowing in a parallel plate channel driven by a uniform pressure gradient. The channel rotates about an axis perpendicular to its walls with a uniform angular velocity resulting in a secondary flow. Using a generalized dispersion model which is valid for all time, we evaluate the longitudinal dispersion coefficientsK i (i=1, 2, ...) as functions of time. It is shown thatK 1=0 andK 3,K 4, ... decay rapidly in comparison withK 2. ButK 2 decreases with increasing α (the dimensionless rotation parameter) for values of α upto approximately α=2.2. ThereafterK 2 increases with further increase in α and its value gets saturated for large values of α (say, 500) and does not change any further with increase in α. A physical explanation of this anomalous behaviour ofK 2 is given.

Notes: Abstract A new trematode, collected in 1971 from Ratnagiri, India, is described as Follicovitellosum indicum sp. nov. A new subfamily, Follicovitellotrematinae is created within the family Zoogonidae Odhner, 1911, to receive the new genus Follicovitellosum, with its genotype F. indicum. The new species is characterized by the follicularized nature of its ovary; the ovarian follicles are posttesticular. The vitellarium is further divided into several follicles which are largely in the pre-ovarian zone, but post-acetabular and posttesticular in location.

Notes: Abstract A new digenetic trematode, collected 1969–1970 at Ratnagiri (India) from the marine eel Leptocephalus conger, is described as Indostomachicola kinnei n. g., n. sp. The new genus differs from Stomachicola Yamaguti, 1934 and Allostomachicola Yamaguti, 1958 in many characteristics. The new species is characterized by an unlobed ovary, absence of receptaculum seminis, and presence of post-acetabular seminal vesicle and a ventral pit.

Notes: Abstract Porosity occurs in cast solidifying metals and alloys due to negative pressures generated during solidification contraction, and pressure developed by gases dissolved in the motten metal. Both the above processes may act either together or separately to produce such shrinkage or gas defects (collectively termed pores). They are generally unwanted and constitute a major industrial problem. This paper is an attempt to review up-to-date knowledge of the conditions of pore formation in cast metals and alloys. Various mechanisms responsible for pore nucleation and growth are summarized, and experimentally evaluated using an unfed type of mould with aluminium alloy castings. The observations are in support of a non-nucleation mechanism of pore formation playing a major role in the occurrence of such defects in cast metals. Further, in gas-containing alloy melts the critical amounts of gas required for single and multiple pore nucleation have been determined quantitatively and are listed in the text. The gas contents of the melts were measured using an apparatus based on the “first bubble technique”. It is also experimentally observed that under poor feeding conditions more than one of the non-classical nucleation mechanisms may be functional at the same time for the formation of such defects.

Notes: Abstract The equilibrium distribution of physical properties in static or uniformly rotating infinitely extended self-gravitating magnetized cylinders is studied taking the magnetic pressure to bear a constant ratio to the gas pressure at each point. The fluid is idealized either as a perfects gas, obeying polytropic or isothermal relation, or a degenerate gas at zero temperature. Numerical results obtained for the physical properties are tabulated and the graphs are drawn showing the run of density and mass per unit length with distance from the axis in each case.
