Notes: Abstract Detecting active sonar returns in multipath media is a central underwater signal processing problem. This paper studies a new approach to active sonar detection using bispectral analysis of sonar data. Its sensitivity to non-stationarities is used to develop a threshold detector that can be applied to broad classes of signals and noise. Precise statistical descriptions of the underwater medium and noise are not required. Theoretical analyses predicting its performance as a function of signal-to-noise ratio and time-bandwidth product are presented. Computer simulation experiments verify the results and show that its performance compares favorably to that of conventional detectors.

Notes: Abstract Oxidation of acetone-4-p-bromophenylsemicarbazone with lead tetraacetate yields only one isomer of 5,5-dimethyl-2-p-bromophenylimino-Δ3-1,3,4-oxadiazoline, C10H10BrN3O. Crystals of this compound are triclinic, space groupP¯1,a = 5·91(1),b = 9·52(1),c = 11·59(2) Å, α =114·1(1) °, β = 93·5(1) ° and γ = 108·8(1) °;z = 2 and the chemical composition is C10H10BrN3O. Of 2306 independent reflexions examined, 877 were strong enough to be measured with integrated precession photographs using MoKα radiation. The structure was refined using a full-matrix least-squares program to a finalR value of 0·064. The structure consists of planar phenyl and oxadiazoline rings, with a van der Waals interaction between a phenyl hydrogen atom and oxygen atom of the five member ring preventing the two rings from being co-planar; the H(13)-O(1) separation is 2·47 Å. TheZ-configuration of the product suggests a specific mechanism for the ring closure involving an organolead intermediate.

Notes: Abstract It has been suggested by Cameron that a cloud of comets containing a mass of condensable elements, comparable to the mass of such elements in the sun, formed on the outskirts of the solar system. If the formation of such comet clouds is a general feature of star formation, they constitute a significant sink of elements heavier than helium. It is shown here that this process provides a possible explanation for the very slow rate at which the mean metal abundance of disk stars has increased during the lifetime of the Galaxy.

Notes: Abstract The rates of electron capture on heavier elements under the extreme conditions predicted for dwarf star supernovae have been computed, incorporating modifications that seem to be indicated by present experimental results. An estimate of the maximum possible value of such rates is also given. The distribution of nuclei in nuclear statistical equilibrium has been calculated for the range of expected supernovae conditions, including the effects of the temperature dependence of nuclear partition functions. These nuclide abundance distributions are then used to compute nuclear equilibrium thermodynamic properties. The effects of the electron capture on such equilibrium matter are discussed. The results of supernova numerical hydrodynamics incorporating the computed equilibrium properties and the influence of electron capture are presented. In the context of the ‘carbon detonation’ supernova model, the dwarf central density required to assure core collapse to a neutron star configuration is found to be slightly higher than that obtained by Bruenn (1972) with the electron capture rates of Hansen (1966).

Notes: Abstract Using an equation of state for cold degenerate matter which takes nuclear forces and nuclear clustering into account, neutron star models are constructed. Stable models were obtained in the mass range above 0.065M ⊙ and density range 1014.08 to 1015.4 gm/cm3. All of these models were found to be bound. The outer crystalline layer of the star was found to have a thickness of 200 m or more depending on the mass of the model.

Notes: Abstract Thermal and vibrational energy losses due to URCA shells in stellar interiors are calculated. Analytic expressions are derived for semidegenerate, relativistic electrons. Results are given for more general cases calculated with a computer. The calculations are carried out for a large number of nuclei that may contribute to URCA energy losses in various stages of stellar evolution. An illustration is given of the cooling and vibrational damping of a white dwarf. For a central Fermi energy ≳5 MeV, the internal temperature of the star should be reduced to the order of 106 K and the relative vibrational amplitude should be reduced to the order of 10−5 on a time scale of 109 yr. URCA shells are present, the URCA neutrino energy loss dominates in the temperature region up to about 2×109 K.

Notes: Abstract Extended generalized quadrangles (roughly, connected structures whose every residue is a generalized quadrangle) are studied in some detail, especially those which are uniform or strongly uniform. Much basic structure theory is developed, many examples are given, and something approaching characterization is given for many types.
