Notes: Valence XPS studies of well oriented polyethylene mats, deposited on a gold substrate, provide direct evidence of the existence of the fold structure at the sample surface and confirm earlier suggestions that conformation is directly fingerprinted in that energy region of the spectra. These results also provide new insight into the origin of the valence XPS spectra differences, so far unexplained, of n-tridecane recorded in gas and solid phase.

Notes: The thermal stability of a number of trialkylsilyl surface modifications has been studied. During heating, weight loss is recorded by thermogravimetry, while evolved gases are simultaneously analysed with mass spectrometry. Changes in the molecular structure on the surface are measured with solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and static-SIMS. Degradation mechanisms are proposed and described by a number of reaction equations. The changes in surface chemistry on the internal powder surface as measured with NMR are similar to those observed with static-SIMS on the outer surface of the powder particles.

Notes: Abstract Osteoporosis is a common disorder in postmenopausal women, which is probably due to decreased ovarian function. Currently, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), involving administration of estrogen and progestogen, is successfully applied to reduce bone resorption. We studied the effect of HRT on 23 postmenopausal women. This consisted of a combination of 17β-estradiol and dydrogesterone, on the serum level of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D) after 0, 6, 12, and 24 months. We found mean serum concentrations (±SD) of 1,25(OH)2D of 130.5 pmol/liter (46.1), 152.7 pmol/liter (45.1), 170.8 pmol/liter (64.0), and 155.2 pmol/liter (59.7), respectively. The baseline values in these women were found to be significantly lower than those during therapy (P⩽0.005). No statistically significant differences were observed when comparing the estrogen-only phase with the combined estrogen-progestogen phase. It is concluded that HRT results in an increase in the serum 1,25(OH)2D concentration which lasts for at least 2 years. This increase may partly explain the preventive effect of HRT on osteoporosis. Purthermore, these results suggest that dydrogesterone does not influence the estrogen-induced changes in serum 1,25(OH)2D concentration.

Notes: The development of gel permeation chromatography (GPC) has provided a convenient tool for the rapid determination of molecular weight distribution. The question has arisen as to the suitability of the method for specification purposes. The present work, suggested by the Naval Air Systems Command, represents an attempt to assess the precision of the method through a series of tests carried out by a number of laboratories using identical procedures on the same samples. Ten laboratories agreed to take part. Naval Ordnance Station, Indian Head, worked out standard conditions for operation of the chromatograph, for calibration of the columns, and for analysis of the GPC curves. Two samples of polystyrene were used by the various organizations for calibration of their instruments. Number-average molecular weight, heterogeneity index, and cumulative molecular weight distribution curves were determined on four samples of carboxyl-terminated polybutadiene (CTPB) and two samples of hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB), all unidentified except by letter code. All laboratories used identical directions for setting up CTPB and HTPB calibration curves which were based on curves determined from vapor-pressure osmometer molecular weights and GPC count numbers of fractionated material. Variation among the different laboratories was 0.15 in heterogeneity index, and a maximum of 1200 in molecular weight provided one aberrant set of values was eliminated. The six samples had heterogeneity indices from 1.15 to 1.54, while molecular weight varied from approximately 3000 to 6000. The average coefficient of variation of the molecular weight values was 6.2 ± 0.7%, which is quite acceptable. Variation in heterogeneity index was too great for specification purposes when considered among the different laboratories, but may be sufficiently good when measured by any one laboratory.

Notes: Six epoxy networks with various structures built up from a diepoxy prepolymer, DGEBA, and three different diamines or mixtures of a monoamine and a diamine were studied by dynamic mechanical analysis in the glass transition region. The systems were designed in order to investigate the dependence of glass transition Tg on both crosslink density and network chain flexibility. The time (frequency) - temperature superposition principle (WLF equation) was used to determine the viscoelastic coefficients Cg1 and C2g which are related to some free volume characteristics on the molecular scale. Cg1, related to the free volume fraction available at Tg depends mainly on crosslink density, even though the product Cg1C2g, related to the free volume expansion coefficient, is dependent on both chain flexibility and crosslink density. Thus, viscoelastic properties determined over large temperature and frequency ranges are shown to yield more precise information on epoxy network structure than the simple analysis of glass transition temperature.

Notes: Photosensitive polyamic acid involving substituted 3, 5-diaminobenzamide has been developed for photopatternable polyimidesiloxanes. This precursor, formulated with photosensitizers, was used to develop fine patterns by i-line UV exposure. The curing of polyamic acid was investigated by using FTIR and physical property measurement. The cured film has a high glass transition temperature depending on the siloxane content. It is stable up to 400°C and loses some of the substituted groups on heating to 500°C. The modulus, dielectric constant, and water absorption decreased with higher siloxane content.

Notes: Amorphous polyarylene ether ketones were examined in the glassy state by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and in the melt by standard rheological techniques. Specimens were well-characterized fractions of two isomeric structures. PALS clearly shows that the polymer with meta linkages in its backbone contains larger voids (〉 0.25 nm radius). Thus despite their similar bulk densities, the two materials must pack very differently on a local scale. On the other hand, the free volumes inferred from the WLF treatment of melt viscosity data are practically identical in both materials ca. 4% at Tg. The comparison between techniques sheds some light on the distribution of free volume. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Dielectric local molecular motions in the glass transition region of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) have been investigated by means of the isothermal depolarization currents technique. Attention is paid to the influence of the modification of the polymer by the substitution of chlorine atoms of PVC chain by the benzenethiolate group. The results are well described by stretched exponential laws. According to the Ngai's coupling model, the coupling between moving units as well as the activation energy responsible for the motions occurring at primitive level have been calculated for each sample at each temperature. All these parameters are noticeably altered by the modification of PVC. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
