Beschreibung: This paper reviews applications of IR techniques in stellar classification, studies of stellar photospheres, elemental and isotopic abundances, and the nature of remnant and ejected matter in near-circumstellar regions. Qualitative IR spectral classification of cool and hot stars is discussed, along with IR spectra of peculiar composite star systems and of obscured stars, and IR characteristics of stellar populations. The use of IR spectroscopy in theoretical modeling of stellar atmospheres is examined, IR indicators of stellar atmospheric composition are described, and contributions of IR spectroscopy to the study of stellar recycling of interstellar matter are summarized. The future of IR astronomy is also considered.

Beschreibung: Spectra of the central 5 in region of Jupiter in the 744 to 980 kayser spectral range are presented at 0.05 and 0.28 kayser resolution. The gases (N-14)H3, (N-15)H3, and PH3 are observed in absorption, and C2H2 and C2H6 observed in emission. A synthetic spectrum which included the opacity from the H2, (N-14)H3, (N-15)H3, and PH3 is compared with observations. It is concluded that: (1) the (N-14)H3 line profiles are best fitted with a NH3 density in the troposphere which is 0.5 times the saturated vapor pressure density and an opaque cloud at the 0.56 bar pressure level, (2) the best fit (N-15)H3/(N-14)H3 ratio is 0.006, (3) the PH3/H2 abundance ratios of NH3 and PH3 must be highly subsaturated above the tropopause or the temperature inversion is cooler than model predictions.

Beschreibung: We report the discovery of two galaxies with (I-K) approximately 6.5 lying near the line of sight to the z = 3.790 quasar PC 1643+4631 A. Based on the spectral energy distributions and angular extents of the objects we suggest that the most likely interpretation is that they are elliptical galaxies lying at z approximately 2.4. The existence of such evolved objects at this redshift would imply a current age of the universe substantially in excess of 1.0 x 10(exp 10) yr for q(sub 0) = 0.02, and 1.9 x 10(exp 10) yr for q(sub 0) = 0.5. It would also imply that at least some large luminous galaxies were already fully formed at z greater than 6.

Beschreibung: During the course of the Hawaii K-band (2.1 micrometer) survey we have detected a compact object, Hawaii 167, lying at a redshift of 2.33, in which are seen both low- and high-ionization absorption lines. In the near-infrared we see broad H alpha emission at a redshift of 2.35 but do not detect the other Balmer lines, (O II) lambda 3727, or (O III) lambda 5007. The absence of strong Mg II or C IV emission in the rest ultraviolet suggests that, at these wavelengths, we may be seeing a poststarburst galaxy rather than a quasar. Indeed, this class of object may be common enough to represent a major episode of galaxy formation, possibly the formation of the spheroids. However, Q0059-2735, the most extreme member of the class of Mg II absorbing broad absorption line quasars, is very similar to the present object, and there may be an evolutionary sequence or some other close connection between Hawaii 167 and the broad absorption line quasars.

Beschreibung: The principal characteristics of Jupiter's infrared spectrum are reviewed with emphasis on their significance for our understanding of the composition and temperature structure of the Jovian upper atmosphere. The spectral region from 1 to 40 microns divides naturally into three regimes: the reflecting region, thermal emission from below the cloud deck (5-micron hot spots), and thermal emission from above the clouds. Opaque parts of the Jovian atmosphere further subdivide these regions into windows, and each is discussed in the context of its past or potential contributions to our knowledge of the planet. Recent results are incorporated into a table of atmospheric composition and abundance which includes positively identified constituents as well as several which require verification. The limited available information about spatial variations of the infrared spectrum is presented
