Notes: Strips of polystyrene held in a flowing O2 or N2O atmosphere have been exposed to 240-600 nm radiation. The extent of photooxidation has been followed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Although N2O is a more reactive gas than O2, it produces a less oxidized polymer surface. This surprising observation can be correlated to the photochemistry occurring at the gas/polystyrene interface. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: An effective, economic way of using carbon fiber is to combine it with a resin and another material, either a fiber or a metal, to produce a hybrid structure. Some of the properties of a hybrid beam made by attaching carbon composite to either side of an aluminum channel section are described here. The structure has considerable potential in the orthotics field; the aluminum core assists in the forming of, for instance, orthoses (calipers), modifies the failure characteristics of the carbon fiber composite, and eases the problem of jointing and adjustment of finished articles. Difficulties can arise when combining carbon composites and metals because of differences in thermal expansion behavior. To alleviate these effects a urethane modified epoxide resin matrix, which has very good adhesive properties, was employed. The work covers measurements of strength and modulus, evaluation of the aluminum/aluminum bond strength, and the flexural fatigue performance.

Notes: The synthesis and characterization of (Me3Si)2AsCH2RCH2As(SiMe3)2 [R = CH2 (1), SiMe2 (2)] is described. Compound 1 reacts with four equivalents of Ph2GaCl to produce (3), whose structure was deduced by use of 1H and 13C{1H} NMR spectroscopy.

    Notes: Reactions of GaX3 (X = Br, I) with As(SiMe3)3 in 1:1 and 2:1 mole ratios were investigated. For the latter reactant stoichiometry, substances having the empirical formulae AsBr3Ga2 (1) and Asl3Ga2 (2), the analogues of the previously reported single-source GaAs precursor (AsCl3Ga2)n, were isolated as yellow isolated as yellow insoluble powders. Low-temperature reactions in a 1:1 mole ratio resulted in the isolation of the adducts Br3Ga.As(SiMe3)3 (3) and I3Ga.As(SiMe3)3 (4). On the other hand, at room temperature the GaBr3 reaction resulted in a complex mixture from which no characterizable compounds were isolated, whereas the Gal3 reaction afforded the crystalline compound [I2GaAs(SiMe3)2]2 (5). The structures of 4 and 5 were elucidated by complete single-crystal X-ray analysis (crystal data: 4, monoclinic, space group P21/c, a = 16.497(2) Å, b = 9.629(1) Å, c = 16.658(2) Å, β = 113.21(1)°, V = 2432(1) Å3, Z = 4; 5, orthorhombic, space group Pbca, a = 14.279(2) Å, b = 17.509(2) Å, c = 13.818(2), Å, V = 3455(1) Å3, Z = 4).

Notes: We consider the effects of using urethane rubber/epoxide resin blends as matrices for unidirectional glass and carbon fiber and for balanced-weave glass fiber cloth composites. The mechanical properties of the unreinforced resin and various composites were measured for specimens with matrices containing up to 35 percent of urethane. The properties of the unreinforced resin show very marked changes between 30 and 35 percent of urethane due, it is believed, to the existence of discrete regions of urethane polymer throughout the matrix. The transverse properties of the unidirectional carbon fiber composites are significantly enhanced by the presence of 20 percent of urethane in the matrix without, apart from a decrease in the shear modulus, any marked change in other properties. This could prove useful in the applications of carbon fiber composites. Results for glass fiber materials are less dramatic, possibly because of poorer adhesion between the glass fiber and the urethane. If this is indeed the cause of the results, it should be possible to bring about an improvement for glass fiber composites by using fibers coated with a suitable coupling agent.

Notes: The steroidal components of 2 marine sponges, Terpios zeteki (from Hawaii) and Dysidea herbacea (from Australia) were fractionated through a combination of chromatographic methods, including reversed phase HPLC., and were analyzed by a combination of physical methods, including high resolution GC.-MS. and 360 MHz 1H-NMR. T. zeteki contains 6 conventional 5α-stanols which comprise 91% of the sterol mixture, and traces (0.5%) of a new C26 sterol, 5α-24-norcholestan-3β-ol. Minor amounts of conventional Δ5-sterols (6.5%) and of a single Δ4-3-ketosteroid (1.5%) were also present. In contrast, the Australian sponge (D. herbacea) contains 3 Δ5,7-sterols which comprise 1.5% of the sterol mixture, and one new C29 sterol, (24 Z)-stigmasta-5,7,24(28)-trien-3β-ol, as the major component (75%). In addition, minor amounts of conventional 5α-stanols (0.5%), Δ5-sterols (5%) and 5α-Δ7-sterols (18%) were present in this complex sterol mixture. The possible dietary or endosymbiotic origins of these sterols are discussed.

Notes: The versatility of the quadrupole ion trap as a mass spectrometer in which the mass resolution may be varied over a wide range has been demonstrated. Mass resolution of 0.8 × 107 and 1.2 × 107 have been obtained for ions of m/z 414 and m/z 614, respectively, well in excess of the normal value of 3m, where m is the mass of ion. At the highest mass resolution, peak-widths at half-maximum are but 52 × 10-6 u. While it has been shown previously that enhanced mass reslution in the quadrupole ion trap can be achieved by reduction of the mass scanning rate, the range of mass resolutions reported here were achieved by reducing the mass scanning rate, in stages, by an overall factor of ca 5.5 × 104.

Notes: The chemical shifts and coupling constants for the ring protons of nine disubstituted naphthalenes (mainly halogenonitre compounds) in carbon tetrachloride solutions have been obtained by analysis and computer simulation of their 100 MHz magnetic resonance spectra. Substituent effects are essentially additive except when a strong π-donor group is in direct conjugation with a strong π-acceptor group.
