Notes: The miscibility of poly(2,6-dimethylphenylene oxide) (PPO) with polystyrene-block-poly(2,2-dimethyltrimethylene carbonate) (PS-block-PDTC) was studied and compared with the corresponding PPO/PS blends. PPO/PS-block-PDTC blends show two thermal transitions in the temperature range investigated; that is the melting of the DTC block and the glass transition of the mixed PPO/PS block phase. The Tg values obtained are discussed by means of the Fox and Gordon-Taylor equation. The influence of the PDTC block leads to higher Tg values of the PPO/PS block mixture than of the corresponding homopolymer blend.

Notes: The synthesis of polyamide 3 (PA 3) by hydrogen transfer polymerization is described. The reaction proceeds homogeneously in N,N-dimethylacetamide/LiCl in contrast to the heterogeneous reaction in 1,4-dioxane and pyridine. By IR, NMR, differential scanning calorimetry and extraction experiments it was shown that the reaction product is nearly pure PA 3.

Notes: The Miscibility in blends of poly(2,6-dimethylphenylene oxide)Systematic IUPAC name: poly[oxy(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)]. (PPO) with random or block copolymers of styrene and methyl methacrylate (MMA) was studied by light microscopy and glass transition temperature measurements. Blends of PPO and the random copolymers were found to be miscible up to a copolymer content of 18 wt.-% MMA. The transition from miscibility to immiscibility in these blends in independent of temperature in the range 100 to 350°C. From these data, the segmental interaction parameter between units of the homopolymer and MMA, χPPO/PMMA is estimated to be about 0,5. Blends of PPO and the block copolymers of styrene and MMA used behave essentially as the corresponding homopolymers in terms of miscibility.

Notes: Phase behavior in blends of random copolymers of styrene and acrylonitrile with block copolymers of styrene and methyl methacrylate was studied by light scattering, light microscopy and glass transition temperature measurements. The results are compared with those of respective blends containing random copolymers of styrene and methyl methacrylate. In terms of macrophase separation, the block copolymers display a more extended miscibility domain with styrene/acrylonitrile copolymers than the random copolymers. However, the extent of the miscibility domain varies as a function of temperature. Unlike the random copolymer blends, all blends containing block copolymers exhibit lower critical solution temperature behavior. Finally, it is established that the systems studied here undergo spinodal decomposition leading to macrophase separation.

Notes: Using the equilibrium-dispersive model of chromatography, we have investigated recycling as a means to improve the recovery yields and possibly the production rates of chromatographic separations. When compared with the optimal values obtained for the conventional single-cycle regime, our results prove the potential for recycling in preparative chromatography. The analysis performed for the separation of two binary mixtures demonstrates that recycling not only improves the recovery yield but can increase the production rate under certain conditions. Different possibilities of collecting sufficiently separated fractions during recycling are compared. The mathematical model developed can be used effectively for designing optimal recycling strategies in preparative liquid chromatography.

Notes: This paper is devoted to the problem of determining intraparticle transport coefficients for multicomponent adsorption from experimental kinetic curves. Due to thermodynamic and kinetic interactions between the mixture's components, this task is more difficult than for single component systems. As an example, the kinetics of adsorption on activated carbon of binary mixtures of phenol and indole from aqueous solutions was studied in a continuous stirred tank adsorber (CSTA). To describe the intraparticle transport of this system, the surface diffusion model using a linear driving force (LDF) was applied. For determining the matrix of the unknown kinetic parameters of the LDF-model, the application of three independent mathematical methods is discussed. Firstly, a semi-analytical calculation (SA) of the intraparticle transport parameters by solving a system of linear equations on the basis of an empirical description of experimental kinetic curves is put forward. Secondly, a non-linear regression (NR) method for parameter estimation was applied. The third method is a non-linear regression which, in contrast to the SA and NR methods, guarantees the stability of the system of differential equations in the steady state of the process (NRS).

Description / Table of Contents: Synthesis and characterization of graft and block copolymers prepared of polar monomers are described. Activation of P2VP-, P4VP-, PVAC-, and PMMA-chains is necessary for subsequent addition of monomers. The reactions taking place are discussed in more detail. Well defined synthesis of block copolymers is achieved, if the short living time of AN chains is used for the addition of the monomers. The investigation of chemical heterogeneity of these copolymers is difficult.
