Notes: A kinetic study of the silver(I)-catalyzed oxidation of tris(1,10-phenanthroline)iron(II) with peroxodiphosphate was carried out by estimating tris-complex at 510 nm. The reaction is found to conform to the rate law (i). with K2 and K3 being the acid dissociation constants of H3P2O8- and H2P2O82-, respectively. The silver(I) catalysis in the reaction has been explained on the basis of complex formation between pdp and silver(I).

Notes: Rate of oxidation of acetophenones by Ce(IV) in aqueous acetic acid 80:20 (v/v) either slows down or remains constant over a range of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) concentration exceeding the cmc value. The rate is then found to increase sharply as the surfactant concentration increases with no sign of reaching a maximum or constant value. From Fluorescence quenching, binding constant for p-nitro acetophenone has been evaluated. The rate data have been rationalized on the basis of a reaction between the acetophenones situated on the micelle surface and active Ce(IV) species in the bulk aqueous phase.

Notes: The kinetics of the electrophilic substitution of several trialkyltin chlorides by iodine monochloride are presented. Rate constants have been determined at four different temperatures and the activation parameters A, Ea, and ΔS°= are calculated. A mechanism is proposed involving charge-transfer as the driving force for the substitution. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The kinetics of the reaction of the benzyl radical with molecular oxygen has been studied between 393 and 433 K. The Discharge Flow technique with detection of benzyl radicals by Laser Induced Fluorescence in their visible absorption band has been used. All experiments have been performed at ≈1 torr in helium as the buffer gas. The radical benzyl decay plots are characteristic of the approach to equilibrium between benzyl and benzylperoxy: benzyl + O2 \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathbin{\lower.3ex\hbox{$\buildrel\textstyle\longrightarrow\over {\smash{\longleftarrow}\vphantom{_{\vbox to.5ex{\vss}}}}$}} $\end{document} benzylperoxy (k3, k-3). Thanks to a reasonable assumption concerning the standard entropy of the reaction (3) (ΔS298°=-29 cal mol-1 K-1), based on the additivity rules of Benson, the following reaction enthalpy is derived for reaction (3): ΔH298°=(-20 ± 1 kcal mol-1). This latter value is compared with a few enthalpies of other related reactions available in the literature. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The kinetics of electron transfer reactions between acetophenones with Ce(IV) have been studied in aqueous acetic acid medium in the presence of cationic micelle Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPyCl) at different temperatures. Kinetic data reveal first-order dependence with respect to each of Ce(IV) and acetophenones. The cationic micelle, Cetylpyridinium chloride enhances the oxidation reactions. The catalysis fits to a model developed by Menger and Portnoy as well as Berezin's phase separation model. The binding and partition constants and the transfer free energy from water to micelle have been estimated and discussed, suggesting that the solubilization of both the reactants in the micellar phase, facilitates the oxidation. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Most of the common classes of organic compounds chromatograph normally on Superoxes. There is no tailing or adverse effect from excessively different activity different activity coefficients. Superoxes are therefore universal phases for gas chromatography. This is also expressed by a wide useful temperature range from ∼50° to ∼300°. High MW Superox-4 has a MAOT about 20° higher than the lower MW Superox-0.1. Several applications illustrating the versatility of Superox phases in (GC)2 are presented.

Notes: Head space GC using a special electropneumatic sampling system works well in combination with glass capillaries. Because a homogenous gas mixture is already present most problems inherent with inlet splitters are thus avoided. In cases where the high vapor pressure of the sample can cause problems with the pressure controlled sampling system, the use of narrow bore glass capillaries provides the necessary inlet pressure. The use of this powerful and convenient analytical tool for water pollution analysis, flavour analysis and the analysis of volatiles in crude oil samples is shown by examples.

Notes: A comparison of the characteristics and Performance of the flame ionization, electron capture, and flame photometric detectors with capillary columns is described. Factors which may affect the limits of detection, linearity, chromatographic peak shape, and other detector performance characteristics are discussed and compared with the results of a model derived for the behavior of concentration and mass flow-rate dependent chromatographic detectors used with capillary GC systems. Examples are given of highly complex and labile mixtures such as pesticide residues and products from coal hydrogenation.
