    Notes: Abstract The 1668 base pairs (bp) downstream of theVitreoscilla hemoglobin gene were sequenced in the hope of finding related genes that might be part of an operon. Instead, a sequence was found that constituted an open reading frame (ORF) of 569 amino acids (apparently the carboxy-terminal part of a larger ORF), in the direction opposite to the hemoglobin gene. This sequence was found to have 64% similarity with the 1685 by at the 3′ end of theEscherichia coli uvrA gene. The inferred amino acid sequence of the Vitreoscilla DNA has 69% similarity with the corresponding sequence of theE. coli uvrA protein, with similarities of 90, 100, and 85% in the helix-turn-helix, C-terminal ATP binding, and C-terminal zinc finger domains, respectively. The distance between the 3′ ends of theVitreoscilla hemoglobin anduvrA genes is 63 bp.

    Notes: Abstract Thin antimony films have been epitaxially deposited at 350K onto cleavage surfaces of mica at different residual gas pressures between 10−5 and 10−9 torr, and their resistivity ∂ measured as a function of film thicknessd≦500Å at temperaturesT=110K andT=300K. The ∂(d) characteristics of films deposited at residual gas pressures of about 10−6 torr with condensation rates of about 1Å/s showed generally decreasing slopes as film thicknesses increased, but irregularities in detail. The ∂(d) characteristics of films deposited at 10−8 torr with the same condensation rate decreasing with increasingd, too, show no such irregularities but very small regular variations of ∂(d) with constant oscillation length Δd between the maxima, and decreasing amplitudes with increasingd. These variations are better recognizable in a modified ∂(d) graph. We tend to interprete these variations by the quantum size effect as we found oscillation lengths and amplitudes compatibel with theory.

    Notes: Abstract The investigation of the interaction of pulsed electron beams with PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) targets is reported. The electron beam of some 10−8 s in duration is produced in a pulsed low-pressure gas discharge. The beam power density of up to 108 W/cm2 leads to a surface plasma formation similar to that of the pulsed laser ablation process. The propagation of the ablated material and the shock wave inside the PMMA target are observed by means of Schlieren diagnostics. An electron density gradient of over 3×1019 cm−4 has been observed in the expanding plasma up to 1.5 μs after the plasma formation. During the early stage of expansion, the expansion velocity of the plasma plume as determined by the steep electron density gradient is around 105 cm/s. The pressure behind the shock front inside the PMMA target as determined from the shock velocity exceeds 0.3 Gpa.

The observed periodic oscillations of the field emission current can be interpreted as the quantum size effect.

    Notes: Abstract We discuss the evolution of optical properties of semiconductor quantum wells, as the quasi-two-dimensional electronic states are further confined into quasi-zero dimensions by a perpendicular magnetic field. We show that confinement in all three directions strongly modifies both linear and nonlinear optical response. In particular, quasi-zero-dimensionality makes an ensemble of magneto-excitons a unique many-body system, distinct from higher-dimensional excitons and the one-component Coulomb system in the fractional quantum Hall regime or Wigner crystal.

    Notes: Abstract CD44 is a transmembrane glycoprotein, which can exist in a multitude of isoforms due to alternative splicing of the pre-mRNA. We have generated monoclonal antibodies to several of these variant regions, which are encoded by 10 additional exons in the extracellular part of the molecule. CD44 variant isoforms have been reported to be involved in the malignant progression of rat and human tumours. The precise localization of CD44 variant isoforms in normal developmental and morphogenetic processes is essential for diagnostic studies of human tumorigenesis. Therefore, we have analysed a large number of different human tissues by immunohistochemistry for the expression of CD44 isoforms containing either exons 4v, 6v or 9v. Expression of exon 9v-isoforms was detected in almost all epithelia analysed, with a few exceptions. Exon 6v isoforms are expressed only in squamous and glandular epithelia, e.g. skin epidermis, sweat and sebaceous glands, oesophagus, ducts of the mammary gland, salivary and prostate glands. Detection of exon 4v-encoded isoforms was restricted to the epidermis and the oesophagus. Similar tissue distributions of CD44 variant isoforms were observed in 10-week-old fetal tissues. Since one of the ligands of CD44 is hyaluronic acid (HA), we also analysed the tissue distribution of HA synthetase. HA synthetase was detected in all tissues analysed, showing good correlation with the expression of the standard form of CD44, CD44s.

    Notes: Summary Monolayer cultures of trypsin-dispersed cells of the rat adenohypophysis were grown for 5 to 54 days. ACTH was localized by immunocytochemistry using an antiserum to synthetic ACTH1–28 prepared in rabbit and sheep anti-goat immunoglobulin coupled with peroxidase. ACTH content of the culture medium was measured by radioimmunoassay. Corticotrophs were found in the cultures and ACTH in the medium at each cultivation time. The corticotrophs retained their essential morphological characteristics. Immunological staining was found in the secretory granules, some tubular or saccular structures, parts of the rough endoplasmic reticulum, and the cytoplasmic matrix. Immature secretory granules in the Golgi apparatus as well as some Golgi elements showed different degrees of immunoreactivity. In agreement with the high ACTH content of the culture medium the number, size and shape of the secretory granules, the active Golgi apparatus, the high amount of extragranular ACTH as well as pictures suggesting granule extrusion claim for a high ACTH synthesis and transport (and low ACTH storage) in the cultured corticotrophs.
