Notes: Summary Four circular plasmids, with a monomer size ranging from 3.2 to 4.94 kb, have been identified in isolates of P. aphanidermatum (two different plasmids), P. torulosum, and an unidentified echinulate isolate. The mitochondrial location has been confirmed for three of the plasmids. Each fungal isolate contained a single plasmid, present in both monomeric and oligomeric forms; plasmid monomers were present as open circles and as supercoiled forms. Restriction maps of the plasmids were dissimilar. Hybridization studies using cloned plasmids revealed no DNA sequence similarity among the different plasmids or between the plasmids and the nuclear or mitochondrial genome of the isolates from which they were recovered. Hybridization of labeled plasmid DNA to Northern transfers of mitochondrial RNA for two isolates indicate that what appears to be the predominant RNA transcript is unit length in size. For three isolates, the plasmid was retained following subculturing and was present in all asexual and sexual single-spore progeny evaluated. For one isolate of P. aphanidermatum the plasmid was unstable and was lost during subculturing.

Notes: Abstract Synthetic one-dimensional scans of brightness fluctuations are generated from intergranulegranule profiles (IGP), which approximate observed scans of granulation fluctuations except that the local (i.e. IGP) mean intensity is kept constant. Comparing the power spectrum of such scans with the power spectrum of observed scans shows that nearly two thirds of the low-wavenumber (k 〈 0.0025 km-1) granulation power is due to this variable mean effect. This result favors the interpretation of granulation as turbulent thermal convection but cannot rule out the laminar convection interpretation.

Notes: Abstract Successful subtraction of instrumental background variations has permitted spectral analyses of two-dimensional measurement arrays of granulation brightness fluctuations at the center of the disk, arrays obtained from Stratoscope I, 1959B-flight, high-resolution frames B1551 and B3241. (a) RMS's, uncorrected for instrumental blurring, are 0.0850 of mean intensity for B1551 and 0.0736 for B3241, somewhat higher than other determinations. These between-frame and between-investigation differences probably result from a combination of calibration errors, frame resolution differences, and, most likely, granulation pattern differences. (b) Significant variations over each array of mean intensities and RMS's, determined for sub-arrays with dimensions in the 2500–10000 km range, indicate spatial brightness and RMS variations larger than the ‘scale’ of the granulation pattern, supporting a turbulent interpretation of photospheric convection. (c) One-dimensional power-spectra shapes provide objective and discriminating criteria for determining granulation pattern differences and, possibly, frame resolution. (d) Two-dimensional power spectra show small, essentially random deviations from axial symmetry which lie almost entirely within the 50% confidence limits. (e) Spectral densities and fluctuation power spectra, computed from the two-dimensional power spectra and corrected for instrumental blurring, noise, and blemishes, have a useable radial wavenumber range nearly double that of earlier Stratoscope I analyses. (f) Corrected RMS's obtained from the corrected fluctuation power spectra, 0.145 ± 0.046 for B1551 and 0.136 ± 0.048 for B3241, depend critically on the accuracy of the correction. (g) The spectra's wavenumber range includes the granulation-fluctuation-producing domain but not the Kolmogoroff domain of turbulence spectra.

Notes: A commercial hexakis(methoxymethyl)melamine (HMMM) resin was fractionated (1) by crystallization of the hexane-soluble fraction from hexane and (2) by partitioning the hexane-soluble and hexane-Insoluble fractions between alumina and various solvents. Crystallization afforded hexakis(methoxymethyl)melamine (1) of 90 to 95% purity. Partitioning afforded 12 fractions with altered proportions of polar and nonpolar species; the least polar fraction was spectroscopically and chromatographically similar to the crystallized material. Relative reactivities of certain fractions were estimated by 1H NMR studies of the rates of reaction with neopentyl alcohol in the presence of catalytic amounts of p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TSA). It was found that the reactivity of fractions, rich in less-polar species, was substantially greater than that of the commercial HMMM resin, whereas reactivity of fractions, rich in polar species, was less. Reactivity was especially enhanced by removal of all active hydrogen species, notably those containing NH groups. A practical consequence of this result was that fully formylated and alkylated melamine resins could crosslink with polyols at substantially lower temperatures than the commercial HMMM resin, which contained NH groups. Therefore, room-temperature crosslinking was feasible.

Notes: Abstract The standard Lown-type capacitor discharge waveform was compared with a single half-cycle 60-Hz sinusoid for effectiveness of defibrillation. Both shock types were used in attempts to defibrillate a series of dogs over a range of intensities from that below the minimum required for defibrillation to values well above those which consistently were successful. An on-line computer was used to monitor energy, peak current, and peak voltage of each shock. The results were plotted as percent success vs each parameter and comparisons were made at the 80% level. The half-cycle sinusoid required 18% more energy but 20% less peak current and 15% less peak voltage for 80% probability of success at these intensity levels. These results indicate that the half-cycle 60-Hz sinusoid is a reasonable alternative as a defibrillating waveform for low-energy applications (open chest surgery, some pediatric cases, and small animal applications) where its advantages of waveform unaffected by load impedance, and simplicity of circuit, may be realized.

Description / Table of Contents: The 13C NMR spectra of some polysaccharides and their methyl derivatives have been analysed. The numbers and positions of the assigned 13C NMR signals give some information about the structure of the monomer unit and the positions of the glycosidic linkage but no information about the anomeric configuration. In this case the 1J(C-1, H) coupling constants make it possible to identify the anomeric configuration, because the mean differences of the J values for the α- and β-anomers are 12 Hz (at least 5 Hz) with the higher values for the α-anomers.
