Notes: Interior orientation (the initial step in comparator-based photogrammetry) requires a set of known photo co-ordinates to act as reference points. Fiducials serve this purpose on large format, metric cameras, as do réseau targets on small format, semi-metric cameras. Most small format cameras, however, have neither fiducials nor a réseau plate. The aim of this study was to establish fiducials in a small standard camera (Pentax 645) so that its imagery could be used for photogrammetric computations. This paper describes two methods of establishing fiducials, followed by a comparison of their stability and suitability for photogrammetric purposes.

Notes: A case study at the Norwegian Institute of Land Inventory (NIJOS) demonstrates that photogrammetry is an effective method for collecting data for geographical information systems (GIS). The process of establishing a photogrammetric data capture system is explained with special attention devoted to financial and personnel considerations. It is argued that photogrammetric data capture is viable provided that a stereodigitiser is used in conjunction with a modular solution GIS.

Notes: Frequency data from different-sized plots are generally accepted as being incomparable. However, how basal frequency data are influenced by plant basal diameter is not well known. Computer simulations were used to determine the influences of grass plant basal diameter on basal frequency data. Basal frequency, basal area and density were estimated with simulated 5 × 10 cm and 20 × 50 cm rectangular plots. Simulated plants had basal diameters ranging from 1.9 to 12.7 cm.Basal diameter had a significant effect on the relationship between frequency and both basal area and density. As differences in plant size increase, the effect on basal frequency becomes larger and the likelihood of an ecologically important influence also increases. Thus, frequency data should not be used to compare relative abundance of species, unless corrections are made for differences in plant basal diameter among species. Additionally, frequency data should not be used to monitor change in abundance of a species through time, unless mean plant basal diameter can be assumed to remain relatively constant.Basal frequency data could be used to ‘signal’ when change has occurred. Then, other sampling methods must be used to determine the nature and direction of change or relative species abundance. For frequency data, the simplicity of collection may be offset by difficulty in interpretation.

Notes: : The optimization of real-time operations for a single reservoir system is studied. The objective is to maximize the sum of hourly power generation over a period of one day subject to constraints of hourly power schedules, daily flow requirement for water supply and other purposes, and the limitations of the facilities. The problem has a nonlinear concave objective function with nonlinear concave and linear constraints. Nonlinear Duality Theorems and Lagrangian Procedures are applied to solve the problem where the minimization of the Lagrangian is carried out by a modified gradient projection technique along with an optimal stepsize determination routine. The dimension of the problem in terms of the number of variables and constraints is reduced by eliminating the 24 continuity equations with a special implicit routine. A numerical example is presented using data provided by the Bureau of Reclamation, Sacramento, California.

Notes: Hydrogen ion concentrations (pH) of the digestive tracts of channel catfish were determined for fish of two sizes (892 and 134 g average weight) at two environmental temperatures (28 and 23°C). Acidic conditions (pH 2–4) were present in the stomach contents of all catfish with slightly higher pH values in stomachs of fish at 28°C. The pH increased to slightly alkaline values (pH 7–9) in the duodenum and reached a maximum level (pH 8.6) in the upper intestinal region and then decreased in the lower segments to approach neutrality in the colon. The pH of the bile ranged from 6.1 to 7.5 and was higher in fish maintained at 28°C. Higher environmental temperatures (28°C) resulted in a slightly lower pH throughout the intestinal and colon segments. The larger catfish had lower intestinal length/body weight ratios than smaller catfish. As the result of distension due to increased food consumption, catfish maintained at 28°C had shorter intestinal tracts than catfish maintained at 23°C.

Notes: This paper discusses development of a monoscopic measurement system for oblique photography, based upon space resection by collinearity. The method consists of enlarging 35 mm slides with a colour laser scanned copier, then digitising surveyed targets with a standard digitising tablet. Particular attention is given to systematic errors introduced by enlarging and digitising as well as to the accuracy of space resection solutions.

Notes: The appearance of the A2 mating type (previously restricted to central Mexico) in Europe during the 1980s prompted an investigation of the genetic make-up of European populations using allozyme loci as genetic markers. The investigation shows that major genetic changes have occurred in populations of Phytophthora infestans in the Netherlands, Poland, and the British Isles. It now appears that a new type of population has been introduced into several locations, and has displaced or is displacing the original populations in these locations. The new and old population types are characterized by unique allozyme alleles and genotypes. The mechanism for displacement of the‘old’by the‘new’population is not yet known.
