Beschreibung: Most of the solid state electronic engineering of the system now generally known as the Minnesota Impedance Cardiograph was performed with the support of a five-year contract, NAS9-4500, with the NASA Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas. This contract ran from 1965 to 1970. In addition to the engineering design and development of the hardware, the contract called for testing on both animals and human subjects. This project also provided funds to construct twenty impedance cardiographs and place them in selected research and clinical facilities for further evaluation. This, then, led to the First Symposium on Impedance Cardiography, held at the NASA Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas, 2-4 June 1969. Twenty-four excellent papers were presented.

Beschreibung: The speckle camera in regular use at Kitt Peak National Observatory since 1974 is described in detail. The design of the atmospheric dispersion compensation prisms, the use of film as a recording medium, the accuracy of double star measurements, and the next generation speckle camera are discussed. Photographs of double star speckle patterns with separations from 1.4 sec of arc to 4.7 sec of arc are shown to illustrate the quality of image formation with this camera, the effects of seeing on the patterns, and to illustrate the isoplanatic patch of the atmosphere.

Beschreibung: A tracking filter that includes an output that is logarithmically proportional to the amplitude of the filtered signal is used to measure the damping exponent of a transient decay. This method is analogous to the digital technique referred to as the moving-block or peak-plot method. The method is simple to use and quite accurate, avoids the numerical computations associated with similar digital techniques, but is constrained by the poor time-domain response characteristics of commercial tracking filters presently available.

Beschreibung: The problems associated with making accurate spectroradiometric measurements in the far UV region are sketched briefly. The equipment and methods that were developed for providing absolute sensitivity calibration of an Apollo 17 far UV spectrometer are described. The absolute reference standards were photoelectric diodes calibrated at the National Bureau of Standards. A complete vacuum optical facility, which included a premonochromator and stable UV light sources, was developed to calibrate the Apollo 17 instrument, and it has been used for a number of other tasks. Absolute radiometric calibrations between about 1200 and 1700 A were performed with an absolute accuracy of + or - 10%. The light source, which was designed to provide a very stable light output, is a low-pressure molecular hydrogen lamp in which the pressure is stabilized by thermal control of uranium hydride powder.-

Beschreibung: Spatial triangulations and topographies of the Martian surface derived from Viking Orbiter pictures depend on the use of symmetric narrow-angle convergent pairs. The overlap in each pair is close to 100 percent and the ground principal points virtually coincide. The analysis of this paper reveals a high degree of indeterminacy in such pairs and at least in part explains the rather disappointing precision of the associated spatial triangulations.

Beschreibung: The development of a highly accurate and reliable cardiotachometer for measuring the heart rate of test subjects is discussed. It measures heart rate over the range of 30 to 250 beats/minute and gives instantaneous (beat to beat) updates on the system output so that occasional noise artifacts or ectopic beats could be more easily identified except that occasional missed beats caused by switching ECG leads should not cause a change in the output. The cardiotachometer uses an improved analog filter and R-wave detector and an Intel 8080A microprocessor to handle all of the logic and arithmetic necessary. By using the microprocessor, future hardware modifications could easily be made if functional changes were needed.

Beschreibung: Comprehensive measurements in the vacuum UV range of 1200-3000 A of efficiency, polarization, and scattering of classically ruled and photoresist gratings are reported. The results show that the art of ruling gratings for vacuum UV use has reached a high level of sophistication and that careful analysis of grating properties can lead to useful improvement of the ruling art.

Beschreibung: Theoretical and experimental work on a Universal Indicated Turbulence Meter is described. A mathematical transfer function from turbulence input to output indication was developed. A random ergodic process and a Gaussian turbulence distribution were assumed. A calibration technique based on this transfer function was developed. The computer contains a variable gain amplifier to make the system output independent of average velocity. The range over which this independence holds was determined. An optimum dynamic response was obtained for the tubulation between the system pitot tube and pressure transducer by making dynamic response measurements for orifices of various lengths and diameters at the source end.

Beschreibung: The characteristics of a quadrant-CCD designed for pointing and tracking are discussed with reference to its use in an adaptive optics program. The quadrant-CCD is used to correct stellar image motion proceeding from atmospheric turbulence by means of a system in which a sensor measures the image offset and sends data to a high-speed tip/tilt mirror. The design and control of the device are detailed, including four 100-micron-square pixels, the quadrant architecture, controller electronics, and data acquisition computer and interface. The transfer function is set forth in the x and y directions, and transfer curves are shown. A laboratory simulation of random image motion was conducted to evaluate the performance of the quadrant-CCD as an image motion sensor, and the experimental results are presented. The suitability of the quadrant-CCD for space-based pointing and tracking uses is demonstrated by this test and two earlier theoretical studies. Some future developments which improve performance capabilities are mentioned.

Beschreibung: Recent accomplishments in three areas of UV instrumentation for space astronomy are discussed. These areas include reliable UV photometry, sensitive photon-detection techniques, and precise telescope pointing. Calibration facilities for spectrometers designed to operate in the spectral regions above 1200 A and down to 400 A are described which employ a series of diodes calibrated against electron synchrotron radiation as well as other radiometric standards. Improvements in photon-detection sensitivity achieved with the aid of pulse-counting electronics and multispectral detectors are reported, and the technique of precise subarcsecond telescope pointing is briefly noted. Some observational results are presented which demonstrate the advantages and precision of the instruments and techniques considered.
