    Notes: p-Phenylene oxadiazole/N-methyl hydrazide copolymers were prepared by polymerization of terephthalic acid, dimethyl terephthalate, and hydrazine sulfate in fuming sulfuric acid, and coagulation of the polymer was obtained in aqueous sulfuric acid. Fibers spun from these copolymers have unusually high strength and modulus, making these materials attractive for the reinforcement of articles such as tires. Yarn tenacities of 16-21 gpd and moduli of 350-450 gpd were obtained. Yarn of these copolymers showed no significant degradation under conditions to which a tire cord material is subjected in tire building and end use. In their performance in vehicle tires, tire cords were found to be competitive with other reinforcing agents such as fiber glass, steel, and commercial poly(p-phenyleneterephthalamide).

    Notes: The corrosion of optical glasses often reduces the utility of uncoated glasses as well as the adhesion of resistive coatings deposited onto corroded glasses. Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was applied to study glass surfaces with respect to their surface corrosion. In particular, leaching by the influence of polish slurries, pure water, air and even residual gases inside a vacuum device was studied in detail. Pure quartz glass and different sodium and barium silicate glasses were broken in ultrahigh vacuum (4 × 10-10 mbar) for the determination of sensitivity factors of the different XPS signals. It was found that a quantitative determination of the surface composition of corroded and leached layers is possible by determination of the intensities of the XPS O 1s, Si 2p, Si 2s, B 1s, Na 1s, Na 2s, Na 2p, Ba 3d and Ba 4d signals. After leaching in aqueous solutions, the barium is exchanged by hydrogen via an interdiffusion mechanism, resulting in an enrichment of different hydrogen bonds (H2O/H3O+, OH-, ≡Si—O—H) in the leached layer. An iterative algorithm is shown, which allows, in addition to the content of all other elements, the hydrogen content to be determined quantitatively in the leached layers. Furthermore, the calculation of the density of surface layers becomes possible. For an exact analysis of the leached layers the intensity loss by contamination layers is considered and the calculated density is used to perform matrix-dependent intensity corrections for the attenuation length.

    Notes: DTA (differential thermal analysis) traces for various kinds of polystyrene and substituted polystyrenes, including bulk-polymerized, monodisperse, and isotactic samples, have been recorded below the glass temperature. It has been shown that the β transition is dependent upon polymer structural modification, traces of water or solvent, and sample thermal history. The experimental data presented here support the conclusion that the β transition is due to conformational changes involving backbone motions and phenyl ring reorientation.

    Description: One of the functions of U1 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP) in the splicing reaction of pre-mRNA molecules is the recognition of the 5' splice site. U1 snRNP proteins as well as base-pair interactions between U1 snRNA and the 5' splice site are important for the formation of the snRNP-pre-mRNA complex. To determine which proteins are needed for complex formation, the ability of U1 snRNPs gradually depleted of the U1-specific proteins C, A, and 70k to bind to an RNA molecule containing a 5' splice site sequence was studied in a nitrocellulose filter binding assay. The most significant effect was always observed when protein C was removed, either alone or together with other U1-specific proteins; the binding was reduced by 50 to 60%. Complementation of protein C-deficient U1 snRNPs with purified C protein restored their 5' splice site binding activity.     Description: AMPA (alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid) receptor channels mediate the fast component of excitatory postsynaptic currents in the central nervous system. Site-selective nuclear RNA editing controls the calcium permeability of these channels, and RNA editing at a second site is shown here to affect the kinetic aspects of these channels in rat brain. In three of the four AMPA receptor subunits (GluR-B, -C, and -D), intronic elements determine a codon switch (AGA, arginine, to GGA, glycine) in the primary transcripts in a position termed the R/G site, which immediately precedes the alternatively spliced modules "flip" and "flop."
