    Notes: Abstract Forty Fusarium isolates obtained from maize fields were screened for moniliformin production on maize kernels. Twelve isolates, including seven of F. subglutinans, were found to produce moniliformin at levels ranging from 0.4 to 64 ppm. Twenty six isolates were also screened for production of deoxynivalenol, diacetoxyscirpenol, T-2 toxin and zearalenone. Of these, 22, including all 11 isolates of F. graminearum, produced zearalenone at levels ranging from 0.1 to 96.0 ppm, while 13 produced T-2 toxin at low levels, (〈1.1 ppm). Deoxynivalenol and diacetoxyscirpenol were each produced by six isolates, also at low levels (〈1.0 ppm). Three isolates of F. graminearum and one of F. sambucinum produced four toxins simultaneously.

    Notes: Summary The ability of a cyanobacterium to take up and concentrate metals in polyphosphate bodies was tested. It was found that Mg, Ba and Mn are taken up by 3 and 4 week old cultures ofP. boryanum and in all cases the metals were concentrated in the polyphosphate bodies. In the case of Mn it was also detected in the cytoplasm. Strontium was sometimes taken up and incorporated into dense bodies which contained Sr, high S, high K and low Ca. In a number of trials no uptake of Sr could be detected. Polyphosphate bodies, formed as a result of the overplus phenomenon did not incorporate the metal at the time they are being formed. Polyphosphate bodies from 2 and 3 week culture contain P, K, Ca and Mg while bodies from 4 week cultures also possess Zn. It is suggested that sequestering metals in polyphosphate bodies may be a significant mechanism by which heavy metals are concentrated.

    Notes: Abstract A study of the temperature relationships of 20 mycelial and yeast fungi which had been isolated at low temperatures from soils and from abattoirs indicated that few fungi can be regarded as truly psychrophilic. Only 1 species failed to grow at 25C. Although all the species investigated were able to grow at 4C and can therefore be considered as potential spoilage organisms on refrigerated foods, their optimal growth temperature was either 15C or 25C. The 20 species could be divided into 4 groups in relation to their temperature relationships, particularly their optimal temperatures and their ability to grow at 30C. A number of fungi able to grow at 4C has been isolated from soils and from abattoirs in New Zealand (1, 2). Several mycelial fungi can show reasonable growth below 10C, and some even down to −10C, but, when laboratory studies have been performed, most of these fungi prove to have an optimal growth temperature at 25C or above (3). These fungi, however, can be a cause of serious spoilage of a variety of refrigerated foods and even at the temperature currently used for meat storage ( −12C), occasional consignments of meat are encountered which show the characteristic spots of fungal contamination. During investigations into the occurrence of these fungi in an abattoir, (1), 9 mould and 4 yeast species were isolated which could grow at 4C, and further studies into the reservoirs of these fungi in the outside environment resulted in the isolation of a further 8 mould and 2 yeast species (2). This paper reports on investigations into the temperature relationships of 20 of these species.

    Notes: Abstract Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and neutron activation analysis (NAA) have been investigated as alternatives to alpha-spectrometry for the low-level determination of237Np and other actinides in environmental matrices. ICP-MS in particular, has been shown here to offer suitable sensitivity, precision and accuracy compared to the other techniques, with considerably faster sample throughput relative to radiometric and activation approaches. Added advantages of ICP-MS are found to include the abilities to determine other long-lived actinides simultaneously and to quantify239Pu:240Pu ratios. The neutron activation analysis approach was found to be particularly prone to interference especially from uranium nuclides.

    Description: 14C is produced as an activation product in nuclear reactors, and may be discharged to both the atmosphere and the marine environment during nuclear fuel reprocessing. In the UK, 14C is discharged, under license, into the Eastern Irish Sea by the British Nuclear Fuels plc (BNFL) reprocessing plant at Sellafield, Cumbria, northwest England, and is then transported into Scottish coastal waters. We analyzed intertidal biota samples to determine the effect of these discharges. The specific activities of 14C found in these samples indicate that the uptake and bioaccumulation of 14C is dependent on the type of organism and its feeding behavior. Measured 14C concentrations in mussels (Mytilus edulis) were higher than those in winkles (Littorina littorea), which were greater than those found in seaweed (Fucus spp.); maximum observed activities were ca. 7, 5 and 3.5 times the accepted current ambient level of 260 Bq kg−1 C, respectively. Annual Nori (Porphyra umbilicalis) samples were analyzed for their 137Cs, 241Am and 14C contents; both the 137Cs and 241Am results correlated well with published Sellafield discharge data (r = 0.877 and 0.918, respectively), whereas there was no significant correlation between measured 14C activities and the discharge record, indicating increased complexity in the chemical and biological behavior of 14C or some discrepancy in the estimated discharge records.

    Description: In closing this workshop, I must thank all of the delegates for making this meeting so very enjoyable for ourselves, the organisers. So much so that we will give serious thought to inviting you back to Scotland very soon. The meeting has, in our view, been eminently successful in the scientific sense. I believe that we have made uniquely important and fundamental observations and plans for the future of 14C dating. I would like to summarise quickly my personal view of the main findings of the workshop. I would start this by recalling the eight questions posed in my opening address. The questions and my impression of the workshop's answers are as follows:
