Notes: Infrared transmission spectra of silicon dioxide (SiO2) thin films (∼4500 A(ring)) prepared by plasma-enhanced chemical-vapor deposition have been quantitatively analyzed. The films were deposited at different substrate temperatures (30–450 °C) using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS)/He, TEOS/He/O2, and TEOS/O2 gas mixtures in a parallel-plate radio-frequency reactor. The infrared transmission fits prove to be very accurate showing evidence of deconvolution into three separated Gaussian profiles to account for the asymmetric line-shape feature of the infrared stretching peak between 950 and 1300 cm−1. The examination of the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectra in the complete frequency range (400–4000 cm−1) and ex situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra indicates that some extra structures originate from the incorporation of carbon and hydrogen impurities in the film. As the substrate deposition temperature is increased, impurities are gradually removed from the growing layer. Films deposited at high substrate temperatures reveal a better stoichiometry and present similar deconvolution bands regardless of the gas-phase composition; the corresponding frequencies are shifted to lower energies compared to thermal oxides. In addition, the intensity of the first Gaussian profile, associated with the low-energy asymmetry of the stretching peak, increases with the substrate deposition temperature while the intensity of the third Gaussian profile associated with the presence of the high-energy peak shoulder decreases. The vibrational properties of the film seem to be strongly related to the deposition conditions.

Notes: Storage at 20°improved Lactobacillus plantarum survival in directly brined olives. The best inoculation dates were on the first and fifth days after brining for Cacereña and Hojiblanca cultivars respectively. Lb. plantarum was present throughout the storage period only in Hojiblanca olives covered with initial free-salt solution and inoculated on the fifth day. In the presence of that bacterium, titratable acidity (0.5-1%) and pH (〈4.0) reached proper values for olive preservation. Yeast populations, consisting of Pichia membranaefaciens and Pichia fermentans, in Hojiblanca, and Pichia minuta, Pichia fermentans, Pichia membranaefaciens, and Rodotorula spp, in Cacereña, were found in all treatments.

Notes: The effects of cultivar, salt concentration and temperature on changes in phenolic compounds during storage of ripe olives were studied, using a 23 factorial design. The effect of salt was negligible. Higher temperature increased phenols diffusion rate into brines for two cultivars assayed. The cultivars, Hojiblanca and Cacereña varied in poly-phenol content. Throughout storage there was hydrolysis of glucosides intially in flesh (oleuropein, verbascoside and luteolin 7-glucoside due to the acidic conditions. This effect caused the content of oleuropein in brines to always be lower than 1.5 mM and resulted in a continous increase in level of hydroxytyrosol

Notes: Abstract We report the presence of quasipermanent effects of photochromic and hole-photorefractive nature in Bi12TiO20 (BTO) at low irradiance at 514.5 nm. A new selective two-wave mixing (S2WM) detection technique was used that allows to separately detect phase and amplitude gratings. S2WM is used in this work for operating a self-stabilized recording setup which allows to produce unusually large quasipermanent effects. We also show that stabilized recording is necessary to obtain reliable information from hologram erasure experiments. Results reported in this paper show the complex nature of recording in BTO and the capabilities of stabilized recording and S2WM for fundamental and applied research on photorefractive crystals.

Notes: Abstract Silicon oxide films have been deposited in a RF discharge plasma using hexamethyl-disiloxane (HMDSO) and Ar/O2 or N2O. Also, aluminum oxide layers have been deposited using trimethylaluminum (TMA) and N2O or CO2. The influence of the nature and the proportion q( the oxidizing gases and file suhstrate temperature effect have been studied. As far as the films obtained with HMDSO and TMA tire concerned, the most important experimental finding is the decrease of the deposition rate with increasing substrate temperature. FTIR, ESCA, and refractive index measurements show that the decrease of the deposition rate correlates with a nearly stoichiometric film. Low negative apparent activation energies are deduced from Arrhenius plots and are representative of deposition rates controlled hr fire adsorption of radical and surface di fusivities. A kinetic rnodel shows that the rate-limiting step is the adsorption of HMDSO or TMA radicals at low temperatures while for temperatures above 250°C the oxidation reactions control the deposition rate.
