Notes: Abstract The concentrations of endogenous gibberellins (GAs) were determined by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in shoots of five non-allelic dwarfs of pearl millet Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br. One mutant (d3), with an extreme dwarf phenotype, was found to be deficient in all GAs measured; the others (d1, d2, d4 and the quantitatively inherited dwarf) had similar levels of GAs to the tall genotype. Only the GA-deficient dwarf recovered the tall phenotype in response to applying GA3 up to the adult stage, while the others showed slight to moderate responses at the seedling stage, depending on the season, and no response at later stages. The d1, d3 and d4 dwarfs had short coleoptiles. A wide range of coleoptile lengths with a normal distribution pattern was observed in the tall, d2 and the quantitatively inherited dwarf, suggesting that there is polygenic control of this trait.

Notes: The ir-spectra in the N—H stretching region of Piv-Pro-NHMe and Boc-Pro-NHMe have been studied in carbon tetrachloride and chloroform solutions over a wide range of concentrations. Based on the concentration dependence of the N—H stretching bands, it has been shown that the characteristic N—H stretching band due to the C7 intramolecular hydrogen bond is around 3335 cm-1. Intermolecular hydrogen bonding also occurs to a small extent in these peptides, giving rise to a slight concentration dependence of the N—H stretching bands. The band around 3335 cm-1 need not necessarily be due to C7 hydrogen bonds alone as proposed by Tsuboi et al. or to intermolecular hydrogen bonding alone as proposed by Maxfield et al.; this conclusion is supported by studies on Boc-Leu-NHMe, which undergoes only intermolecular hydrogen bonding. We have shown that Z-Aib-Aib-OMe and Z-Aib-Ala-OMe form C7 intramolecular hydrogen bonds in addition to C5 intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The present studies also show that all the peptides studied exist in more than one conformation in solution.

Notes: Oxoalkyl acrylates of long-chain 7-oxo alcohols were synthesized as intermediate monomers for the preparation of poly[n-alkyl (oxy) -n-hexyl acrylates] for the first time. These polymers have wide applications as fluidity improvers (pour point depressants) for petroleum crude oils. Characterization of all the intermediate monomers was done by IR, 1H-NMR, and MS, and that of polymers by IR, 1H-NMR, and GPC. These polymers were systematically investigated for their efficacy as pour point depressants on three types of high waxy Bombay High (Indian) crudes. In addition to establishing the pour points, relevant rheological parameters of the untreated and the additive-treated crude oils were determined in the laboratory with a rotational viscometer. Results of the crude oils that were pre- and posttreated with these new polymers have shown enhanced activity of flow properties as compared to the crudes that were treated with poly(n-alkyl acrylate) flow improver.

Notes: Polypropylene (PP) fibers have been irradiated with 60Co γ rays in the presence of carbon tetrachloride, in the absence of oxygen. Irradiations have been carried out between dose rates of 0.078 and 0.664 Mrad/hr, and the effects of absorbed dose and temperature on the C—Cl formation in the PP fibers have been investigated. G(C—Cl) values were higher at lower dose rate. G(HCl) values were found to be much higher than the G(C—Cl) values, and IR absorption studied indicated increasing unsaturation with increasing dose. The number average molecular weights (M̄n) were evaluated from intrinsic viscosity measurements in decalin at 408 K and the M̄n values decreased with increasing dose and temperature. G(scission) - G(crosslinking) values were calculated and it was found that the Gs - Gx values are higher at lower doses and higher dose rates. The thermal characteristics of the irradiated fibers were investigated by thermogravimetry (TG) analysis in air or argon and with differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) studies. The TG data indicated slightly less thermal stability for the modified fibers both in air as well as argon. The DSC data indicated very little change in the melting points of the samples, the melting points being around 444 ± 2 K.

Notes: Graft-copolymerization reactions of binary mixtures of vinyl monomers (acrylamide-acrylic acid and acrylonitrile-acrylic acid) with polyester fibers have been studied by chemical initiation technique using benzoyl peroxide as an initiator. The total graft add-on was determined gravimetrically, while the modified Kjeldahl's method for N-estimation was employed to determine acrylamide and acrylonitrile grafts in their mixtures with acrylic acid grafts. Synergism of very high order was noticed during the graft-copolymerization reactions. In the case of the acrylamide-acrylic acid system a very high order of synergism (129.15%) was noticed at equimolar proportions of the monomers in the grafting bath. Both acrylamide and acrylic acid showed synergistic influence over each other during graft-copolymerization reactions. In the case of the acrylonitrile-acrylic acid system, however, the presence of acrylonitrile reduced the graft yield of the acrylic acid component showing a negative synergism; but acrylic acid enhanced the acrylonitrile graft yield to a considerable extent. The results have been explained in terms of reactivity ratios of the monomers. The conductivity results of the monomer mixtures also supported the experimental results.

Notes: The charge storage mechanism in poly(acrylamide) films was studied by means of the technique of thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TSDC). The TSDC were measured as a function of field strength, temperature and time of polarization in dependence on the heating rate. One peak was observed on the TSDC spectra at low polarizing temperatures, while two peaks occurred for higher polarizing temperatures. The first peak was attributed to dipole orientation and the second one to space charge polarization.

Notes: The steady state electrical conduction in solution grown poly(acrylamide) films was investigated in the temperature range 303 to 450 K at different field strengths. It was found that the Richardson-Schottky and Poole-Frenkel mechanisms operate simultaneously. In films doped with cosin and rhodamine B, respectively, the electrical conduction was attributed to the formation of charge transfer complexes.

Notes: Polyblend films of poly(vinyl alcohol) and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) were prepared from solutions of the homopolymers. The steady-state electrical conduction was studied in the temperature range from 309 K to 450 K at the field strength of 0.75 to 46.5 · 106 V/m using different electrode materials. The charge transport is attributed to the injection of charge carriers from the electrode materials into the dielectric according to the Richardson-Schottky mechanism and their subsequent trapping and release according to the Poole-Frenkel mechanism.

Notes: Poly(vinyl alcohol) films were polarized at different electrical field strengths and temperatures. The peak temperature of the TSDC spectra shifted to higher values with increasing polarizing field strength and polarizing temperature. The activation energies and relaxation parameters of the process were evaluated. Based on the results, the origin of TSDC was attributed to space charge polarization with some contribution of dipole orientation.
