    Notes: Editorial decisions, based in part on reported hypothesis test results, affect the probabilities associated with those results: the probabilities of Type I and Type II errors thus become different for readers than for authors. The distributions of published parameter estimates are similarly affected. A framework for studying the consequences of test-based information filtering is developed and illustrative examples are provided. The examples indicate that filtering can markedly distort the power functions of hypothesis tests and can induce large estimator biases and increases in mean square error. It is argued that test-based filtering is relevant not only to journal publication but to other forms of information dissemination as well.

    Notes: Effects of carcass transfer and line transport, deboning, protein extraction and product wrapping, meat blending, product packaging and cooking-smoking procedures on microbiological concentrations were evaluated. Increased mesophilic bacterial numbers were associated with carcass transfer and line transport with no effects on other bacterial concentrations. Hand deboning increased bacteria on breast and thigh tissue. Mechanical deboning increased bacterial content. Protein extraction and product wrapping produced minor effects. Bacterial numbers from meat blends reflected combination of input components. Product packaging exerted minor effects on numbers of bacteria from raw product. Handling required in packaging cooked product produced increases in tissue bacterial content. Cooking and smoking procedures were equally effective in reducing bacterial contents to essentially negative concentrations.

    Notes: Abstract Sporozoites and unsporulated oocysts of Eimeria tenella were shown to contain a pyrophosphate-dependent phosphofructokinase (PPi-PFK) but apparently lack an ATP-specific activity. The PPi-PFK resembles those that occur in a number of other protists in being reversible and not subject to metabolic control. In contrast, the ADP-utilising pyruvate kinase, present in two developmental stages of the parasite, exhibited strong positive cooperativity with respect to its substrate, phosphoenolpyruvate, and was shown to be allostetically activated by glucose 6-phosphate, fructose 6-phosphate and AMP. It is suggested that the PPi-PFK represents an adaptation of the parasite towards life in an environment containing only low concentrations of oxygen and that the unusual allosteric regulation of pyruvate kinase evolved to compensate for glycolysis not being controlled at the PPi-PFK step.
