Notes: Abstract A comparison of transverse momentum (P T) distribution of the alpha particles emitted as projectile fragments from12C-emulsion interaction at 4.5 A GeV/c with double Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution yields two temperatures in the projectile fragmentation region, i.e., 10 MeV and 40 MeV with different reaction mechanisms, thereby giving rise to two classes of events. This work presents a detailed study of the multiplicity characteristics for pions and protons emitted in both forward and backward hemispheres in these two classes of events. The results show some interesting features in these two classes.

Notes: On the Pathway of the Catalytic Reduction of 7-MethylpterinThe catalytic hydrogenation of 7-methylpterin (VII) in a neutral solution occurs first by the reduction of the 7,8-double bond (thermodynamically-controlled reaction) followed by the reduction of the 5,6-double bond. On the contrary, in an acidic medium like CF3COOH, the 5,6-double bond is reduced first (kinetically-controlled reaction). The dihydro-intermediate then undergoes a [1,2]-H-rearrangement leading to the formation of the thermodynamically more stable 7-methyl-7,8-dihydropterin (XV) which on further reduction gives 7-methyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydropterin (VIII). The catalytic reduction of 7-methyl-7,8-dihydropterin (XV) with deuterium gives stereoselectively a sole product with D at C(6) in the equatorial position.

Notes: On the Pathway of the Catalytic Reduction of 6-MethylpterinThe catalytic hydrogenation of 6-methylpterin (I) in neutral or weekly acidic solution begins, as for the 7-methylpterin, by the thermodynamically controlled reduction of the 7,8-double bond. It is not possible to say, according to our experiments, which double bound, either the 5,6 or the 7,8, is first reduced in strongly acidic solution. However, a 5,8-reduction can be excluded.

Notes: N-Vinylcarbazole (NVC) is polymerised in the presence of pyridine at 60°C by using azodiisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and benzoyl peroxide (Bz2O2) as initiators and the results are compared with those obtained when benzene is used as the solvent. In the AIBN-initiated system using pyridine as the solvent the rates of polymerisation follow an usual linear relationship with respect to monomer concentration and a square root dependence with respect to the initiator concentration. In the Bz2O2-initiated system, however, deviations from these ideal behaviours are observed when benzene and pyridine, respectively, are used as the solvent. Initiation occurs through the complexation of the monomer with Bz2O2 and degradative transfer is thought to be mainly responsible for this unusual kinetic behaviour.

Notes: Benzoxazole-2-thiol (1)/dibenzoyl peroxide (Bz2O2) was used as photoinitiator for the polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in bulk and in solution. The study of initiator decomposition was conducted spectrophotometrically. Kinetic studies of the photopolymerization indicated the formation of a complex between 1 and Bz2O2 in the stoichiometric ratio 2:1. The initiation is believed to occur via in situ formation of bis(benzoxazol-2-yl) disulfide in the presence of light.

Notes: Formate hydrogenlyase (FHL) activity was induced in a strain of Escherichia coli S13 during anaerobic growth in yeast extract-tryptone medium containing 100 mM formate. The cells obtained at the optimum growth phase were immobilized in 2.5% (w/v) agar gel when 50-60% of the whole cell FHL activity was retained. The immobilized FHL system had good storage stability and recycling efficiency. In the lysis of formate, an increase of formate concentration to 1.18M increased QH2 (initial) value of the immobilized cell, and subsequently cells, hydrogen evolution, in general, ceased after 6 to 8 of incubation, resulting in incomplete lysis of formate. Presence of small amount of glucose (28 mM) was more or less quantitatively lysed with concomitant disappearence of glucose from the medium. Synthesis of formate from hydrogen and bicarbonate solution by the immobilized cells was also characterized. Presence of glucose (10 mM) in 50 mM bicarbonate solution stimulated formate synthesis by immobilized cells. The pH optimum range, Km, and specific activity of the immobilized cells for the lysis of formate were 6.8-7.2 0.4M, and 66 mL/g cell-h, respectively. The cells could fix hydrogen to the extent of 24.4% (w/w) of its own wet cell mass in a 72-h reaction cycle. Potentiality of the immobilized FHL system for biotechnological exploitation was discussed.

Notes: The observed Raman and ir spectra of Ca-poly(L-glutamate) in the β conformation have been analyzed by means of a normal mode calculation. The force field for the main chain was transferred without refinement from β-poly(L-alanine), yet it provides a good prediction of the observed bands and, in particular, explains subtle differences in the spectra of these two β-sheet structures. Main- and side-chain modes are well characterized, and the dependence of the amide III frequency on side-chain composition is again demonstrated.
