Notizen: A finite element formulation which includes the piezoelectric or electroelastic effect is given. A strong analogy is exhibited between electric and elastic variables, and a ‘stiffness’ finite element method is deduced. The dynamical matrix equation of electroelasticity is formulated and found to be reducible in form to the well-known equation of structural dynamics, A tetrahedral finite element is presented, implementing the theorem for application to problems of three-dimensional electroelasticity.

Notizen: A concise and efficient algorithm is presented for deriving finite element shape functions from an arbitrary set of independent functions. Based on special one-dimensional interpolatory schemes derived via the algorithm, a variety of two- and three-dimensional interpolatory schemes are developed which are useful for modelling singular behaviour. The methodology presented is general and may be fruitfully applied to the development of ‘special’ finite element shape functions for a variety of other situations.

Notizen: A new finite element procedure is introduced for the analysis of nearly-incompressible media. The approach may be simply implemented by a small change of the standard technique, and is applicable to arbitrary anisotropic and/or nonlinear media. The procedure is shown to specialize to the selective integration and mean-dilatation formulations under appropriate hypothesis.

Notizen: An improved algorithm is presented for integrating rate constitutive equations in large-deformation analysis. The algorithm is shown to be ‘objective’ with respect to large rotation increments.

Notizen: The propagation and decay of acoustic waves in exterior domains in an essential ingredient in the study of fluid-structure interaction. A strategy must be devised to compute solutions over domains which are unbounded. Exact impedance conditions at an artificial external boundary are specified by the DtN method, yielding an equivalent problem that is suitable for domain-based computation. The DtN boundary condition is non-reflective, giving rise to exact (and thereby unique) solutions. The truncated DtN operator, which is employed in practice, fails to inhibit the reflection of higher modes, so that non-unique solutions may occur at their harmonics. Simple expressions determine a sufficient number of terms in the truncated operator for unique solutions at any given wave number. There are three characteristic length scales in the computational problem: the radius of the artificial boundary, the geometry of the body (represented by the internal boundary) and the mesh size. Numerical studies examine the dependence of the conditioning of finite element coefficient matrices on the number of terms in the truncated DtN operator vs. the wave number non-dimensionalized by each of the length scales. Analytic results regarding the number of terms sufficient for unique solutions are confirmed. As long as this criterion is respected, no upper limit on the allowable wave number is detected. A local approximation of the boundary conditions restores uniqueness for all wave numbers.

Notizen: We present solutions for the effective stress induced by gas flow through a porous solid into a borehole resulting from sudden pressure reduction. Tensile effective stress that exceeds the strength of the solid will lead to borehole failure. This has applications to the intentional creation of cavities, relevant to the efficient recovery of coalbed methane, and the avoidance of borehole stability problems in conventional gas production.

Beschreibung: In searching for the optimum parameters that minimize the total life cycle cost of an energy conversion system, various combinations of components are examined and the resulting system performance and associated economics are studied. The systems performance and economics simulation computer program (SPECS) was developed to fill this need. The program simulates the fluid flow, thermal, and electrical characteristics of a system of components on a quasi-steady state basis for a variety of energy conversion systems. A unique approach is used in which the set of characteristic equations is solved by the Newton-Raphson technique. This approach eliminates the tedious iterative loops which are found in comparable programs such as TRNSYS or SOLTES-1. Several efficient features were also incorporated such as the centralized control and energy management scheme, and analogous treatment of energy flow in electrical and mechanical components, and the modeling of components of similar fundamental characteristics using generic subroutines. Initial tests indicate that this model can be used effectively with a relatively small number of time steps and low computer cost.

Beschreibung: As part of the energy conversion/self sufficiency efforts of DSN engineering, it was necessary to have a simplified computer model of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system. This article describes the analysis and simplifications employed in the development of a PV cell array computer model. The analysis of the incident solar radiation, steady state cell temperature and the current-voltage characteristics of a cell array are discussed. A sample cell array was modelled and the results are presented.

Beschreibung: Energy consumption at the Goldstone Echo Deep Space Station (DSS 12) is predicted and quantified for a future station configuration which will involve implementation of proposed energy conservation modifications. Cogeneration by the utilization of diesel waste-heat to satisfy site heating and cooling requirements of the station is discussed. Scenarios involving expanded use of on-site diesel generators are presented.

Beschreibung: A cost effective method to achieve increased wind turbine generator energy conversion and other operational benefits through variable speed operation is presented. Earlier studies of multiple and variable speed generators in wind turbines were extended for evaluation in the context of a specific large sized conceptual design. System design and simulation have defined the costs and performance benefits which can be expected from both two speed and variable speed configurations.
