    Notes: By means of Monte Carlo simulations of a lattice model, microphase separation transition of symmetric diblock-copolymer melts confined in the thin-film geometry between parallel hard walls is studied. We impose a surface field which acts repulsively only on one of the two species, to stabilize lamellar order parallel to the surfaces. However, interplay between two characteristic lengths, that is, the natural thickness of the lamellar l and the thickness of the film D, causes complicated behavior. In case that the two lengths are compatible with each other, clear lamellar order parallel to the surfaces is observed at temperatures lower than the bulk transition temperature, as expected. On the other hand, tilted or deformed lamellar structure, or even coexistence of lamellae in different orientations are found in cases of strong conflict. In both cases, lamellae are fully established. Even at temperature higher than the bulk transition temperature, weak order is induced by the surface field, and a gradual transition between such surface-induced order and bulklike order is observed. Film thickness and temperature dependence of the ordered structure is discussed, as well as a density reduction near the walls and in the interfaces between the segregated regions.

    Notes: Abstract Shock-loading experiments are performed on single-crystal specimens of BaZnGeO4 (BZG) between 13 and 51 GPa using a propellant gun and a two-stage light gas gun. Observation by an optical microscope reveals that all the shocked specimens are made of fragmented blocks of 10 ∼ 100 μm in size. X-ray analyses indicate that the samples shocked to pressures above 41 GPa became a polycrystalline state of BZG with a weakly textured structure. A small amount of dissociation products of BaGeO3 (pyroxene type) and ZnO (wurtzite type) are detected in this pressure range. Between 27 and 19 GPa, a new phase which is thought to be produced by considerable deformations in the ring structure consisting of ZnO4 and GeO4 tetrahedra is observed. Below 19 GPa, shocked specimens are brought into a well aligned mosaic structure, but no significant change in the crystal structure is detected.

    Notes: Abstract We examined the effects of pinealectomy and blinding (bilateral ocular enucleation) on the circadian locomotor activity rhythm in the Japanese newt, Cynops pyrrhogaster. The pinealectomized newts were entrained to a light-dark cycle of 12 h light and 12 h darkness. After transfer to constant darkness they showed residual rhythmicity for at least several days which was gradually disrupted in prolonged constant darkness. Blinded newts were also entrained to a 12 h light/12 h dark cycle. In subsequent constant darkness they showed free-running rhythms of locomotor activity. However, the freerunning periods noticeably increased compared with those observed in the previous period of constant darkness before blinding. In blinded newts entrained to the light/dark cycle the activity rhythms were gradually disrupted after pinealectomy even in the presence of the light/dark cycle. These results suggest that both the pineal and the eyes are involved in the newt's circadian system, and also suggest that the pineal of the newt acts as an extraretinal photoreceptor which mediates the entrainment of the locomotor activity rhythm.

    Notes: Summary The unmixing transition of both symmetrical polymer blends AB (i.e. chain lengthsN A=N B=N) and asymmetrical ones (N B/N A=2,3) is studied by large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of the bond fluctuation model. Combination of semi-grand-canonical simulation techniques, «histogram reweighting» and finitesize scaling allows an accurate location of the coexistence curve in the critical region. The variation of the critical temperature with chain length (N) is studied and compared to theoretical predictions. For the symmetrical case, use of chain lengths up toN=512 allows a rough estimation of crossover scaling functions for the crossover from Ising to mean-field exponents. The order-disorder transitions in melts of both symmetric (compositionf=N A/(N A+N B)=1/2) and asymmetric (f=3/4) block copolymers is studied for very short chains (16≤N≤60). The interplay between structure and chain configuration is emphasized. Qualitative evidence for «dumbell formation» of chains and vacancy enrichment in A-B-interfaces and near hard walls is presented.

    Notes: Summary Fourteen normotensive patients with liver disease (6 with cirrhosis and 8 with chronic hepatitis) and 7 healthy volunteers were given a single oral dose of nilvadipine 2 mg. In addition, nilvadipine 4 mg was administered orally twice daily for several months to 6 hypertensive patients with mild liver dysfunction and 18 hypertensives with normal liver function. A significant increase in plasma nilvadipine was found in the patients with cirrhosis as compared both to the normal and chronic hepatitis subjects; the time to peak concentration was similar among the three groups. The peak plasma nilvadipine concentration was closely correlated both with the serum albumin level and the retention of indocyanine green. Changes in blood pressure, pulse rate and various vasoactive hormones following a single oral dose of nilvadipine did not differ between the groups. Thus, an increase in plasma nilvadipine relative to the level in normal subjects was demonstrated in patients with cirrhosis following a single oral dose, as well as in patients with slight liver dysfunction following long-term oral administration.
