Notes: Mouse strains differ widely in their natural killer(NK)-cell activity. In the (A X B6) X A backcross, high reactivity was linked to H-2b, although non-H-2-linked genes were also demonstrated (Petranyi et al., 1975). Harmon et al. (1977) demonstrated an H-2Dd-associated reactivity gene (1977). In the present study, we have tested eleven B10 congenic strains for NK activity. The H-2Dd strains B10.A, B10.T(6R), B10.S(7R), B10.HTT and B10.D2 were more highly reactive than B10, B10.S, B10.G, B10.A(2R) and B10.BR, which do not carry the d allele at the H-2D locus. While this confirms the H-2Dd association of a reactivity gene, an exception was found in the B10.A(5R) strain that was low reactive in spite of the fact that it carries H-2Dd. This suggests the possibility that the H-2Dd-associated gene is outside H-2, to the right of Tla.The AKR.H-2b congenic line had the same low activity as the AKR.H-2k strain; both were much lower than B6. This suggests either one of two possibilities: the H-2b-linked reactivity gene is relatively distant from the H-2 complex, although localized on chromosome 17 or alternatively, if localized within or in the close neighbourhood of H-2, it requires non-H-2 genes for full expression.Previously, we have shown that the B6 X DBA/2 F1 hybrid was more highly reactive than either one of its two parental strains (Klein et al., 1978). A similar complementation effect is described in the present paper for the B10.D2 congenic strain. The high reactivity of this line can be due to the combined effect of an H-2b-linked gene from DBA/2 and the non-H-2 background of B10 or, alternatively, the former, together with an H-2b-linked gene from B6 that lies well outside outside the H-2 locus itself.

Notes: [Auszug] We drilled three sites in the Shikoku Basin (Fig. 1). Site 442 is located about 50 km to the west, and Sites 443 and 444 are about 95 km to the east of a postulated extinct spreading centre5'6 oriented NNW-SSE. The sedimentary section at all three sites consists of hemipelagic clays (Fig. 2) on the ...

Notes: Summary Serum calcitonin levels have been reported to be elevated in premature and newborn infants, a period of maximal rate of bone growth. To determine whether calcitonin remains elevated during the first year of life, a time of rapid extrauterine bone growth, fasting serum calcitonin levels were determined in 31 hospitalized infants and children ages 24 weeks gestation to 6 years. Calcitonin levels were significantly higher in the premature and newborn infants than in the first year of life. However, calcitonin levels in the first year of life were still significantly higher than during the second to sixth years. This fall in serum calcitonin levels parallels the age-related decline in rate of bone growth. One can speculate that the changes in serum calcitonin levels during the first year of life may indicate that it plays a role in bone growth or mineralization. However, the possibility that the changes in calcitonin levels are unrelated to changes in bone growth or mineralization has not been ruled out.

Notes: Abstract The production of biomass, polysaccharide storage material and H2 from malate was studied in the wild-type and mutants RdcI, RdcII and RdcI/cII of Rhodobacter capsulatus. The mutants are defective in either copy I, copy II or both copies of the nitrogenase genes nifA and nifB. Stationary phase levels of biomass, polysaccharide and H2 were determined in phototrophic batch cultures grown with 30 mM of d,l-malate and either 2, 5, or 8 mM of ammonium or 7 mM of glutamate. Calculation of the amounts of malate converted into the three products revealed that, at 8 mM of ammonium and 7 mM of glutamate, malate consumption and product formation were balanced. But with decreasing ammonium concentrations malate not converted into biomass was utilized with decreasing efficiency in polysaccharide and H2 formation. This suggests formation of unknown products at the lower ammonium concentrations. Under conditions of optimal N supply, 80% of the malate not used for biomass production was converted by the wild-type and strain RdcII to H2 and CO2. Mutant RdcI exhibited slightly decreased H2 production. The double mutant did not evolve H2 but accumulated increased amounts of polysaccharide. However, the amounts of polysaccharide were lower than should be expected if all of the spare malate, not utilized by the double mutant for H2 production, was converted into storage material. This and incomplete conversion of malate into known products at low ammonium supplies suggests that polysaccharide accumulation does not compete with the process of H2 formation for malate.

Notes: Abstract Rhodobacter capsulatus was grown chemotrophically in the dark in oxygen-regulated chemostat culture and in the presence of limiting amounts of fixed N. When the oxygen partial pressure was varied, in situ nitrogen fixation occurred only at 1% of air saturation of the medium. By contrast, nitrogenase proteins and their activity measured in the absence of oxygen could be detected up to 30% of air saturation. This revealed that expression of nitrogenase is much less sensitive toward oxygen than the in situ function of the enzyme. At oxygen partial pressures 〉 1% of air saturation, the degree of modification of the Fe protein of nitrogenase was increased. Light was of no stimulatory effect on both the activity and the expression of nitrogenase. This holds true for growth at 1% or 5% of air saturation. At 5% of air saturation, however, high illumination enhanced the inhibitory effect of oxygen on nitrogenase formation.
