Notes: The water quality of running water is determined mainly by the type of human activities within the catchment area, including fish culture. The introduction of polyculture, the intensive application of fertilizers, the use of manure and the development of fish-cum-duck culture have influenced water quality in fish ponds and in pond effluents in both the growing and harvesting seasons. Natural waters which serve as water supply for fish production systems are characterized by an increased nutrient load. Government order No. 3/1984.(11.7.) OVH, based on the Government order No. 32/1964. (XII. 13.) deals with the Water Utilization Act which is concerned with the state requirements on release of industrial effluents. This Act divides the area of the country into ‘zones o water quality protection’, and determines the limits of pollution load for each water quality zone including penalties in case the limits prescribed in the Act are exceeded. Fish farms are also included into this Act. In 1988, a 2-year research programme was started to analyse the effluents of extensive and intensive fish production systems from both environmental protection and economic standpoints. The goals of this research programme were: (1) to determine whether fish farm effluents meet the state requirements given under Government order No. 3/1984.(11.7.) OVH at all times of the growing season and what pollution is caused in the recipient; (2) to describe the changes of water quality in the inflow and the outflow waters and in the recipient during the rowing season and to collect data on possible water quality changes due to the seasonal drainage. These data should serve as a base for describing nutrient pathways in order to develop strategies for impact mitigation.

Notes: Synthesizing the results of 18 PhD studies carried out at the Fisheries Research Institute in Szarvas, Hungary, on fish-cum-pig and fish-cum-duck ponds, the nitrogen cycles in these organically loaded ecosystems were constructed. Data for 13 water and sediment nitrogen components, including is solved and particulate matter, combined and freely dissolved amino acids and dissolved and ‘absorbed’ sediment total ammonia concentrations, were quantitatively analysed. All known nitrogen transfer rates were determined simultaneously or estimated through mechanisms of nitrogen balance: nitrogen fixation, ammonification, ammonia regeneration, amino acid uptake, ammonia uptake, nitrification, nitrate uptake, nitrate respiration and denitrification. Based on management parameters as well as compartment and transfer rate measurements, the nitrogen balance and budgets were also calculated for the experimental ponds and for a fish-cum-duck commercial farm. The farm nitrogen budget was determined by analysing 20 years of nitrogen input-output data. The analysis shows the high assimilative capacity of the fish-cum-livestock ecosystems for nutrients, indicating the possible buffer function of the system in highly utilized agricultural areas.

Notes: Based upon a detailed study carried out 20 years ao on the sediment nitrogen content in the commercial carp ponds of Horvȧthpuszta intensive farm and upon the reexamination of the same 19 ponds, we found an average annual rate of nitrogen accumulation of 174 pg N g-' dry sediment. Nitrogen budgeting for the 20 years (1970–1990) was completed for input nitrogen sources of inorganic fertilization, duck feed, fish feed, manure, atmosphere deposition, filling water and nitrogen fixation, as well as for output sources of alfalfa, fish, rice, duck yield, drainage water and denitrification. The average annual nitrogen retention of 93 kg ha-1 corresponded well to the 174 μg Ng-1 measured value of nitrogen accumulation. During the 20 years of nitrogen accumulation on industrialized agricultural land of Hungary, the intensive fish farm received altogether 1246 tonnes of nitrogen and released only 686 tonnes to the environment. Therefore removing, processing and accumulating most of the available nitrogen while minimizing the pollution to the environment is one of the challenges for the future for both aquacultural and agricultural activities.

Notes: Abstract The formation reactions of IrO2/TiO2 mixed oxide films supported on titanium metal plate were followed by thermoanalytical (simultaneous TGA, DTG, DTA) and combined thermoanalyticalmass spectrometric (TGA-MS) techniques. The electrochemical characterization of the fired coatings was made by cyclic voltammetry. The thermal decomposition of the titanium precursor salt, titanium diisopropoxide bis-2,4-pentanedionate, shows a major change in the presence of hydrated iridium (iii) chloride. Due to the catalytic effect of the added noble metal, an almost complete conversion of the organic components of the precursor mixture to CO2 and H2O is observed in the combustion stage. Chlorine, from thermal decomposition of the iridium salt, is produced in a separate stage at higher temperatures, indicating that a sequence of steps occurs prior to the oxide formation. For iridium chloride alone a complexation between the metal ion and the solvent (isopropanol) is observed, leading eventually to H2O and CO2 production (combustion step) between 300 and 500° C. The cyclic voltammetry results indicate that the features of the precursor reaction affect the charge storage capacity of the oxide films.

Notes: Summary Linkage analysis of 15 families affected by X-linked agammaglobulinaemia (XLA) showed close linkage with three probes located towards the centre of the long arm of the X chromosome. No cross-overs were found using pXG12 (DXS94) lod 6.6 or S21 (DXS17) lod 4.4. One cross-over was found with 19.2 (DXS3). This confirms and extends a previous linkage study (Kwan et al. 1986) which demonstrated linkage with S21 and 19.2. Of the families 14 were informative for either pXG12 or S21 and these probes should thus be of great diagnostic value. No evidence of heterogeneity was found in the XLA families but several cross-overs within this region were detected in a family with the X-linked hyper-IgM syndrome confirming this disease as a separate clinical entity.

Notes: Abstract A genomic clone encoding prothymosin α (gene symbol: PTMA), a nuclear-targeted protein associated with cell proliferation, was isolated and the 5′-regulatory region subcloned and sequenced. Because of previously reported discrepancies between several cDNA clones and a genomic clone for prothymosin α, we determined the sequence of the first exon and of a 1.7-kb region 5′ to the first exon. The sequence of the genomic clone reported here corresponds to the published cDNA sequences, suggesting that the previously noted discrepancies may be due to genetic polymorphism in this region. In addition, our sequence data extend the known 5′-upstream sequence by an additional 1.5 kb allowing the identification of numerous, potential cis-acting regulatory sites. This 5′-flanking cloned probe permitted us to localize the protothymosin gene to chromosome 2 in humans.

Notes: Abstract It has been known from the very beginning of the thermal analysis that the transport processes can significantly influence the thermoanalytical results. In this paper, three characteristic examples are given to show that this problem is more complex and arises more frequently than it is generally believed. The studied reactions are the carbon monoxide evolution from calcium oxalate, the thermal degradation of polytetrafluoroethylene, and the thermal decomposition of azodicarbonamide. TG and DSC experiments were carried out with sample masses varying between 0.05 and 8 mg. The necessity of the development of new kinetic models is concluded.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Mittels simultaner TG, DTG, DTA (Derivatograph-C), weiterhin mittels Thermogastitrimetrie, kontinuierlicher selektiver Wasserdetektierung, TG-MS und XRD-Verfahren wurde die thermische Zersetzung der Komplexe [Co(NH3)5CO3]NO3, [Co(NH3)5NO3](NO3)2 und [Co(NH3)sH2O](NO3)3 untersucht.
Notes: Abstract The thermal decomposition of [Co(NH3)5CO3]NO3, [Co(NH3)5NO2](NO3)2 and [Co(NH3)5H2O](NO3)3 complexes was studied by simultaneous TG, DTG, DTA (Derivatograph-C), termogastitrimetry, continuous selective water detection, TG-MS, and XRD methods. Due to the nearly explosive reaction of these complexes the samples were heated in a labyrinth-type crucible after a 10-fold dilution with alumina. Through the quantitative determination of NH3 and H2O it was possible to reveal the subtleness of decomposition of these complexes. Based on the qualitative and quantitative results obtained by the different thermoanalytical techniques used the equations of decomposition are given for both stages of the reactions.
